School Plays
Has anyone participated in a school play? If so, what role did you play and what play was it? I started last year in fifth grade when I tried out for the Sound of Music for our spring play. I wasn't called back and I didn't get a part, but it was a LOT of fun. I was in the chorus, being a nun and a party person. I'm not really sure what our spring musical will be this year, but I definitely plan on trying out!

There's a Children's Theater in Wilmington? I never knew that! I know there's a few up on the North Shore, but I didn't know there was one there. I've been trying to find a good community theater for a while because I want to do more than just my school plays.

In Wilmington, MA. Yes. It is only kids, and I would love to meet you in person. It ranges from 100- 225 dollars. Though it is occasionally lower.

Well, I was in a summer musical theather at my school that only had a few people, we were all girls (the one boy dropped out) and we had lots of different songs from different musicals to make our own little play. I was an ensemble member and was going into sixth grade.
Then I was in a verison of Hansel and Gretel in school for sixth grade, I was a gingerbread cookie.
For the musical that year we did Huckleberry Finn and I was a girl and had one singing line. The person who played Tom Sawyer was very late the second show since he was at a pool party... I won't let him live that down...
Then the Summer musical Theather going into seventh grade was Honk! Jr. And it was all girls from the start, not many I might add. I was Jay Bird, Turkey, Grace (wasn't orignallly, but I rocked it!), a froglet, and a chorus member.
Now, I'm in A 40 minute version of Two Gentlemen Of Verona and I play Panthino, this is a school wide play. I have five lines, but not many of my friends got roles (most of my friends do drama) and of course, Tom Sawyer was the lead, and he's been banned to do it because his parents won't let him do it until he doesn't get detentions for two weeks (that's never gonna happen, this kid gets hunted down by the headmasters and I think the police once). So basically, were doomed! And he doesn't have an understudy, there are like no boys in it, and the boys who act in it aren't very well.
Sorry for that rant on the boys of drama. Hehe

@Blu
Tell the director to get me a script. I'll pretend I'm an eighth grader and replace him. What can go wrong, lol?

Get ready for this, because it's going to be long. My middle school has a drama club and I participated in every play I was there for. I also went to their summer musical theater camp. Now that I'm in high school, I still participate in it. We have an award winning drama club and I'm wicked proud of us!
When I was in sixth grade, I started out as one of the King's Men in Macbeth (the Shakespeare play). Then a bunch of people dropped out and I ended up playing the Gentlewoman. I had a scene that was just me, the Doctor, and Lady Macbeth. It was sweet for a sixth grader! We tried to counteract the bad luck of the play by only referring to it as The Scottish Play, even on programs, but a table we had to use as a prop still broke on opening night.
That same year, our spring musical was called Cinderella's Glass Slipper. I was the Fairy Godmother's Apprentice (not understudy; this was an actual role). I got a better role than some of the eighth graders. I got solo lines (speaking and singing) and got to wear a pretty dress. I was also miced. I didn't realize I would be wearing a mic, so I didn't have anything to clip it to, so there was this wicked embarassing moment where an eighth grader was trying to clip it to my tights and a guy walked by, and I was just wearing tights and *whispers* underwear under my dress. *shudders* Always wear shorts under your dress when acting, kiddos. ALWAYS! That was probably one of my favorite roles anyway.
Next year, we did this play called Ukrainiacs for our fall play all about Ukrainian folk tales. I was Oksana, the narrator with the most lines. I got to throw pancakes at people and lend a pool noodle to the drama club. That one was fun.
Our spring musical was The Music Man, Jr. It's known in my family as a disaster because we had a new director who decided to cast newbies. None of which were loud enough. The guy who played Harold couldn't sing. He's like my best friend now and has definitely improved, but he was bad back then. If he finds this, I'm sorry dude, but you were. I did not get a role in this production (see the new director only casting newbies thing). I ended up being the props director. Because of my perfectionism, I pretty much ran the show, especially when the stage manager didn't show up the second night. I don't know why more people don't put me in a position of power because I rocked it. The director showed up to the cast party and told me he wanted to make me stay back just so I could be on tech crew every year. Although the guy who played Harold lost a pitch pipe on me. I was about ready to kill him.
That summer was the first year I did the summer musical theater camp. We did a musical called The Ever After. It was basically a talk show that all the fairy tale characters went on after happily ever after. I was Stepsister 2. It was a very comedic part. This was when I discovered that I did my best on stage when I just did anything for a laugh and didn't care if I embarassed myself or not. I looked really ugly in that play because I teased my hair up, did my makeup, and wore clashing clothes. I also walked around the stage with toilet paper in my shoe and a bagel in a fanny pack that I started eating onstage. I loved that role so much.
The eighth grade fall play was Looking Glass Land, a version of Alice Through the Looking Glass. My best friend was Tweedle Dee and I was Tweedle Dum. The role was really bland vanilla in the script, but we basically turned the whole show into us acting like idiots on stage. And we only had lines in one scene.
The musical in eighth grade was Fame, Jr. I had lost confidence in my singing skills from not making Music Man, so I tried out for this one with a monologue since there were some non-singing roles. I was aiming for Iris, the main female dancer. I got it. And Tyrone, my love interest, was the same friend who was Tweedle Dee. It was really awkward. She's a really pale blonde girl who can't dance and she was playing a black male dancer. I think our director had way too much faith in us. We still hammed it up, even though we were supposed to have serious roles.
That summer I was in the only show I was ever in with my sister. Our director had to write the show because there weren't enough people for any of the shows we wanted to do. I played Mandi, the really sarcastic, pessimistic one. I got to read and chew gum on stage.
The next year was my freshman year of high school and I was so excited to join the drama club because all the kids in it are awesome. It was also the year after we had won the state drama festival with Dead Man's Blues/ Alchemy of Desire (we just call it Alchemy). So the whole drama club was wicked happy. The only thing with us being this good is the fact that it makes everything wicked competitive. So I'm not expecting any roles until my junior year.
Fall play freshman year was Noises Off. There was no nickname for this one. I did tech. Didn't even get a callback, but I wasn't expecting one. The tech crew basically had to turn the WHOLE FLIPPING SET around during intermissions (there were two) because the play dealt with making a play backstage and on stage.
Our festival play that year was Night Train to Bolina. We just call it Bolina. It was a... mature play, but our festival plays always deal with mature stuff. It's just the type of play our Fest director likes. We won prelims and made it to semifinals, but didn't make it past there (one of the judges didn't understand it). I was running crew. Set up is five minutes, as is breakdown. My job in doing this was making sure the set floor got on a dolly and carrying that dolly around. The whole experience was really fun because you get to hang out with kids from drama programs in all sorts of schools and see a ton of shows, even though it gets stressful. I recommend it to everyone who does drama at a school that participates.
Our musical that year was The Drowsy Chaperone. I tried out for both a role and dance ensemble, but I was only a chorus member. I was absolutely fine with it, though. Although on Broadway it has a very small cast, my director turned it into an ensemble piece. My Special Role in this play was handing a balloon to the star during the "Show Off" musical number. It was a really fun show.
This year, our fall play was Our Town, my absolute favorite play. I got my first callback for a high school show, but I was still on tech crew, which is fine by me. It was actually wicked fun because they didn't really need a tech crew, so I just had to usher and then I got to sit with my friends and watch the show. We did it so there was environmental staging but no audience participation, which basically means the whole auditorium became a stage. The actress playing Emily was really good, especially her emotion.
The play I am currently involved with is called How I Learned to Drive, It is another festival show and also deals with more mature stuff. I am the costume designer, which is a new job for me. I'm really excited because it takes place in the 60's, which means VINTAGE DRESSES.
So yeah, I started out as an actor and now I'm more of a techie. Although acting is one of my favorite things, I'm a lot more appreciative of the backstage side of things now. I also make movies with my sister and cousin and from that I've started to love being a director. I think if I ever were to actually go into theater, I'd probably want to be a director more. I just love being able to decide what is going to happen next.:)

I'm in 8th grade, and this year we're doing Seussical the Musical. I LOVE singing - it's my life. I got a callback (yay!) and was going to be considered for the role of Mayzie, but I didn't get it :(. It's so much fun, though. I'm a Who, and I get a duet and a quartet! :D

Why I (now) hate Pollyanna- a short story
I'm homeschooled, and so twice I've done a production with other homeschoolers. the first year it was "Charlotte's Web" and I loved it!!!! (I was a narrator, so I was on a LOT) The next year, it was Pollyanna. My mom said I had to try out for a small role ( the practices are a long drve away) and hence I got the ten-line part of Mrs. Benton/ Ladies Aider.
The play ended up being 4 HOURS long. Yes, 4 HOURS!!!!!!!!!! It was awful, we couldn't have lights backstage, the backstage was TINY, we couldn't talk and Pollyanna droned on about how glad she was. Still, I made some good friends, so it wasn't all terrible. But I still can't hear the word glad without cringing.

Oh! I did Charlotte's Web! If you did the same version I did, I was Avery. There wasn't a narrator though, so it was probably different. Believe me, I brought the house down! At my every line they laughed, and I got to walk out by myself and I GOT THE MOST APPLAUSE! More than Fern, Wilbur, Charlotte, Templeton, anyone! It was fun.
(January 1, 2014 - 10:07 pm)
Our Avery did too! He was REALLY good, though our Templeton was close!! I adored that one!!

It was hilarious. I did okay singing, and I did a really good job being a pest. I am a girl, but playing boys is more fun! You get to be annoying.
(January 2, 2014 - 9:03 pm)
TOTALLY get that!! You must have done a differnt version- ours didn't have singing. I would have loved to see you as avery! What did you do to your hair? (unless its already short)
(January 3, 2014 - 10:02 am)
I've always had wicked short hair because I think hair is just there to bother you and my mom won' let me shave all of it off :(
(January 3, 2014 - 8:12 pm)
Funny, I have really long hair!!! Too bad your mom wouldn't let you:(

I am going to be Mary Poppins in Marry Poppins for my school play! I am so excited! The best part is that I get to dance! I take ballet and Modern, so this should be fun!
