Classical Music Thread!
So, I recently played Lincolnshire Posy by Percy Grainger at a concert. My band played the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th and 6th movements. These are all English folk songs that Grainger wanted to preserve so he went around the countryside recording these songs, sung by common people on a WAX cylinder, then composed the music EXACTLY as the people had sung it. It is a great piece that is very challenging and I really enjoyed playing it. If you haven't heard it, you should totally listen to it. Youtube is your friend!
Anyway, I just wanted a place where people could discuss classical music that they like/have played in bands/orchestras/choirs. I am always on the lookout for new music to enjoy and I think other people may be interested too.
So, post away people!
And, if you don't like classical music, at least you learned something cool about Percy Grainger and an awesome piece of music!
Dvorak is one of my favorite composers. I especially love the New World Symphony and another one. I think the numbers are 7 and 8 or 8 and 9. It think he may be the one whose symphonies were renumbered at some point. Anyway, I love everything or his I've heard. He gives flutes and cellos really pretty parts.

I've been playing J. S. Bach's "Prelude in C" from THE WELL TEMPERED CLAIVER on piano, and for band we're playing "New World Symphony." What qualifies as classical? Is "Linus and Lucy" classical? What about "Bryce Canyon Overature?"

I would HIGHLY suggest Frank Tichelli. We played "Abracadabra" by him last year in band and it was EPIC. Go find it on Grooveshark. Do eet now.

I'm pretty sure I've played Tichelli before. Not sure what sing it was, though.

I love Frank Tichelli! I've played Abracadabra alrady and I loved some of his other pieces. Angels in the Architecture is a piece made of absolute wonder. You have to look it up right now. He also wrote Cajun Folk Songs II which was pretty fun to play. He does a lot of stuff for clarinet which I greatly appreciate. Clarinets Unite!

I play clarinet! I love it.

I just listened to Angels in the Architecture and I want to say that it is AMAZING. Did you play that? Because it sounds so cool!

Our orchestra teacher doesn't know anything at all, so we're playing terrible stuff.
But I highly recommend any Igor Stravinsky, Brahms Cradle Song of the Virgin (great viola part, there) and anything by Schubert.
@Admin:
I really like the viola part in his American Quartet.
I'm not sure I've heard it. I'll have to look it up.

CLASSICAL MUSIC I RECOMMEND
1. Nightrider. Go on YouTube and click on Nightrider by Meyer.
2. The Russian Music Box. Look it up on YouTube if you want to. It doesn't sound that great on the YouTube versions, though.

@Admin- I like Dvorak, too, although he's not one of my favorite composers. I saw "Stabat Mater" in concert. It was very grand. Do you know it? I also have a CD of the New World symphony, which I also like.
At the moment, I'm playing a piece by Saint-Saëns (I'm not sure if that is spelled correctly). It's called "The Swan" and it's very beautiful. Does anyone know Smetana? He has this piece called "Moldau", which I've also played. It's very beautiful.

Yes! A classical music thread! I absolutely love classical music. I was raised on classical music and, while I like to explore new genres all the time, it is the one genre that has always been a constant in my life. I love to listen to a local classical radio station and that, in addition to the orchestra I'm a part of, is how I come to learn about new pieces and composers. I'm currently in love with Shostakovich, whose 11th string quartet and 5th symphony I love. Like the Admin, I love Dvorak so much! I played his Slavonic Dances 5-8 Op. 46 in orchestra recently and it was great fun. In fact, I love pretty much everything I do in orchestra. For this upcoming concert we are playing Peter and the Wolf which makes me one of the happiest people on the planet. Peter and the Wolf was pretty much my entire childhood and I get so much nostalgia at rehearsal. Anyway, I must go attend to the rest of my homework, but that's a bit of my rambling for now. And one more thing - @ Scarlett: At my last orchestra concert, I played Percy Grainger's arrangement of "Irish Folk Tune from County Derry," a tune people might know as Danny Boy. It was a great arrangement - really pretty and a fun break from all the intense things we played that concert (Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique for one, that I highly recommend checking out if you haven't heard).
Hi, Leaf! At our last orchestra concert we played Aaron Copland's Appalachian Spring and Hoedown--both great pieces and lots of fun to play! Now we're working on Mozart. We did Dvorak Slavonic Dances a few years ago. You can enjoy classical music (and other kinds, too) your whole life! And in band and orchestra, as I've heard music teachers say, "No one sits on the bench!"

WHOA Shostakovich! I've never played any of his pieces myself (tuba... or not to baa...) but I've heard them played by the wonderful orchestra we have.

I play a clarinet and I have almost no idea about all the composers that you guys are all taking about, but it is so fun to play in band and the music sounds pretty good. I used to think classical music was boring, but now I really appreciate it!

I haven't been listening to much classical music lately because I've been busy and when I do have time for music, I generally want to get further into the enormous list I have in my head of musicals I want to see, but I did recently start watching Aida (the opera, although I love the Broadway show as well) with English subtitles. It's beautiful; I wish I could understand the lyrics in the original form, but I still love it. Also, I'm picking up on some Italian as I listen, which is nice.

I play classical guitar. I really love Minuet by Johann Krieger, which is also played on the piano. I'm going to perform Andantino Opus 98 #1 by Mauro Giuliani later this month.

I love the Doctor Who theme. Does anyone know where I could get the cello sheet music for that?
