Kyngdom Survival Guide

Felix glared up

Chatterbox: KYNGDOM™ RP Board

Felix glared up

Felix glared up at the bright sun, a challenge to the golden glow.

He immediately regretted it, looking back down at the ground, blinking the searing halo out of his eyes. Trust him to be stupid enough to look straight at the sun.

Averting his gaze from the sun, Felix scanned the landscape. It was hot and dusty, with dirt and tractor trails cutting across the wild grasses. They must've originally been farmland, or grazing pastures, judging from the half-broken fences and large divided sectors, but he couldn't tell which. Besides, they were all grown over and devoid of cultivation now–it seemed that Kyngdom had taken back its land.

Felix sighed, shaking the dust from his jacket. It had been nothing but grass and hills and plains for miles, and miles, and miles. Surely, he should've encountered a town by now.

No luck.

Well that was rather ironic.

Felix would probably find a town quite soon, actually!

Felix grinned, optimism taking over, and started bounding down the hill, and toward the next one.

And, his prediction had been right, because as soon as he crested the next hill, he stopped, sighting civilization.

A small town stretched out through a valley, a narrow river winding its way through. It looked rather broken-down, even from a distance, and Felix thought he could see the remains of some destroyed buildings. Surrounding the town was a large amount of white flowers, each popping up in clusters.

If Felix squinted, he could see people moving amongst the flowers.

Well, time to see if the place had a decent inn!

---

The place did not, in fact, have a decent inn. The best Felix could find for lodgings was a small bed and breakfast, with an old lady with a parrot. Felix had read several works of literature about evil landladies before, so he decided against it, and left to find somewhere to camp.

Somewhere along his journey from Paralia, Felix had picked up a tent–he wasn't sure where, maybe from a wandering merchant or caravan of some sort, but at any rate, he had one (though small), and it worked just fine.

As Felix wandered closer to the fields of white flowers, he could see that the people were harvesting them, plucking them up by the stems and arranging them in large baskets. They looked like some sort of bizarre wedding bouquet arrangement. Curiously, Felix hopped down the hill, coming closer.

"Hallo!" Felix called, waving vigorously at the nearest person, who's face was blocked by an enormous sunhat.

They stopped, turning around. They were a girl, maybe a little younger than Felix, slight wisps of brown hair coming out of their sunhat, which shaded their face. They were carrying a basket full of white flowers.

"What do you want?" they asked shortly, their expression sour.

Felix shrugged, a little surprised by their hostility. "I was just wondering why you were harvesting the white flowers. Is there a wedding or something?"

The girl's face went blank for a moment, before she dissolved into laughter. "A wedding?" she exclaimed, gasping for breath, "Of course not! These are on order of Catastrophe, you know, the person who's been lording over most of Kyngdom for years."

"Oh! Catastrophe? What does he want with these flowers? I thought he was off fighting wars, or something. Why are you even harvesting them for him? I don't see an army badge or whatever," Felix commented.

The girl frowned. "You're not from around here, are you?"

Felix shook his head. "What gave it away?"

"Nobody from here asks that many questions," she said, her original hostility dissipating, and she stretched out her hand to shake, "and I'm Anise. Want to talk?"

---

Look at me, writing something! This is related to my last thread (somewhat), where Felix encountered Kit on his way out of Paralia. I didn't finish that story-arc, so let's just pretend that he took Kit and their friend to a hospital, and left abruptly.

Felix agreed to talk to Anise while she was working, picking the flowers. He would've offered to help, but he was too lazy to.

"So, why is Catastrophe collecting the flowers?"

"You're not supposed to know," Anise said, fixing Felix with a hard glare.

"But you do?" Felix countered.

"I'm not supposed to know."

"But you do?"

Anise paused, and then relented. "Yes, I do."

"Well then, tell me!"

"How do I know I can trust you?"

"Well who am I going to tell?"

Anise shrugged. "Fair enough. They're brazen goo flowers."

Felix raised an eyebrow. "Really?"

"What, do you think I'm lying?" Anise sniped.

"I don't know, seems pretty weird to think about. Just like–fields upon fields of these magical things that can kill Powers. And they look like you could use them at a wedding."

"That's the thing you fixate upon? Weddings?"

Felix laughed, shielding his eyes from the sun. "But why are you working for Catastrophe? You didn't sound too pleased about him 'lording over most of Kyngdom'."

Anise glanced around. The closest people were a couple of other workers, who were a good distance away. She lowered her voice. "It's because of the peace talks. Catastrophe basically saved our entire town from destruction, even though a little of it still got bombed. The town elders were all immensely grateful to him–"

At this, she rolled her eyes.

"–and so they agreed to start growing these instead of our crops. Our fields were bombed anyways, and this is bringing in more money than potatoes ever did."

"But you're not happy about it," Felix prompted.

"I'm not!" Anise exclaimed fiercely, "But I can't talk to anyone about it, because they're all so grateful to Catastrophe for being our 'lord and savior', when he burned down my house, and nobody cares, because he 'saved' several others."

Felix nodded sympathetically. "Why are you still working here then?"

Anise opened her mouth to speak, and then frowned. "None of your business," she snapped, her irritable mood seeming to have returned.

"Alright then," Felix said placatingly, raising his hands, "let's talk about something else. Do you like books?"

---

They talked about the most random things, until the sun was dipping low in the horizon, and Anise announced her shift was over. She stripped off her gloves, which were heavy and thick, and tossed her basket (full of white flowers) over her shoulder.

As she was doing so, one fluttered to the ground. Felix stooped, picking it up, about to call to Anise that she had dropped one.

"Come on, hurry up!" Anise called from up ahead, without so much as a backward look.

Felix glanced at the brazen goo flower curiously for a moment, before dropping it in his pack. "Coming!" he yelled.

Anise emptied her basket of white flowers on a truck bed on the edge of the field, which was piled high with them, and grabbed an end of a net. All the other workers seemed to have already finished, heading out of the fields in a long line, and back to the town.

"Come on, help me get the netting over it," Anise said.

Felix joined her at the truck bed, and tugged the mesh net over the flowers, attaching it at the end with two hooks.

"Thanks miss," the truck driver called, starting up the engine.

They watched the truck rumble away for a moment, sending clouds of dust go up, before Anise turned around abruptly, striding purposefully down the path.

"Do you have somewhere to sleep?" Anise asked, as they entered town.

"Nope, I was planning on camping out."

Anise paused a moment. "I guess you could stay at my house. My brothers are home, and so is my mom."

"I thought your house was burned down?"

"We rebuilt it."

Felix shrugged. Couldn't hurt. "Alright then, sure!"

Wow I'm just so motivated today.
