Kyngdom Survival Guide

The dragon was

Chatterbox: KYNGDOM™ RP Board

The dragon was

The dragon was perched atop a cliff, watching the very last ray of sunlight wink away below the earth. A vibrant dome of indigo disintigrated into blackness as the land was plunged into dark and the stars pushed their way through the sky. A cold wind brushed across the forest canopy below, sending flurries of snow twinkling over a fading white mist. Whisps of breath curled from the dragon's nostrils and drifted towards the sky, where they disappeared in the inky nothingness.

At last, the night had awoken.

The dragon tucked her legs beneath her and let her wings droop down onto the rocks beside her. She turned for a moment and focused her gaze upon the clearing in the distance, where she had momentarily left Whist and Enyo and the Powers and the wintry beast.

Ecio had returned earlier with news from the flea market, and before, Enyo had borne details of the same event. Jaaws knew the market had ended by now, but if a drum had been sighted there, it was most certainly worth inspecting.

Jaaws closed her eyes and retreated from her scales, drawing away from the forest, from the snow, from the cold, from reality. Her consciousness drifted into darkness, where there were little windows here and there, bits of influence and evil she had left in certain beings throughout Kyngdom. Some of them were nothing but scabs, remnants of hypnosis that were blocked off from another end: the consciousnesses of Icy, Little Crow, and Eliyana Fur. Others were small holes, tiny openings that had been clumsily sealed and could be reopened with little effort: the mind of Hazel Coryli. The rest of the windows pulsed with energy--connections that were thriving. One led to Catastrophe.

Jaaws blinked and suddenly she was in a room by a fire with a book in her hands, youthful hands which clutched feverishly at yellowed parchment as shadows stood guard by the doors, shadows that averted their heads from the letters on the pages, pages which held whispers of power...

Smoke rose and filled the ceiling of the vast chamber, the chamber which Jaaws suddenly recognized, the place she had not seen in centuries. Catastrophe was within his old castle.

Jaaws, now a shadow herself, crept out of Catastrophe's consciousness and, as she had done in the caves at FAFA, became a smoky red-eyed figure that hovered near the fire.

"Catastrophe."

The boy king looked up from the tome with a jolt and his piercing eyes fell upon Jaaws's form. He was prepared to fight; the Sword of Ravenmore leaned against his chair, but when he saw Jaaws his hand moved away from his weapon.

"Jaaws. It's been a while."

"Yes. I thought you would still be hard at work trying to locate the Shield, so I didn't want to bother you."

"I am," Catastrophe replied, setting the enormous book down on a table. Jaaws sent a tiny breeze whirling towards it, but Catastrophe placed a finger upon its open surface before Jaaws could turn his page.

"Are you having any progress?" Jaaws wanted to know. The fire crackled behind her subtle leer.

"Yes." But Catastrophe offered nothing more.

"Have you forgotten about the Powers?"

"Last time we spoke you were planning to use our new Brazen Goo on the other active Powers. I left them up to you. I have not forgotten them. It seemed to me that you did."

"Caelani, Ecio, and Ayearth are now under my influence." Jaaws was careful not to mention Whist or Enyo's hand in any of this. "I am now on the trail of Sylvia's drum. There have been rumors of her drum at the flea market, which recently ended. Are there any of your spies in that area who have brought you information?"

Jaaws knew Catastrophe had eyes everywhere. If the drum had really been at an event as important as the flea market, it was likely Catastrophe had already laid hands on it.

Catastrophe sighed. "Yes, I've been informed of the flea market. I chose not to engage there, but last I heard the drum was stolen from it. Other than that I have heard nothing, but I'll send a notice to Jokull. Perhaps my soldiers there will know something."

Jaaws weighed her options. Jokull was on the way to Mer anyway. "I'll go to them myself. If they don't know anything then I'll proceed to Mer. I'll tell you what I find."

Catastrophe nodded and Jaaws retreated back to her own body.

She stretched and noticed that the moon had risen over the snow-capped forest. It cast a silvery light upon the woods, and when Jaaws turned to look back down at the clearing, she noticed it was covered in a ghostly mist.

Jaaws alighted and sailed down to where the others were waiting, prepared to present them with the change of plan.

-------

Night, I was thinking that Jaaws probably knows about Demise because Jaaws worked so closely with Catastrophe during his reign. But I didn't put anything about her in this because I don't know her backstory well enough.

I was thinking--and this is just me throwing my thoughts into a thread, so I'm not trying to force anything--that all the SAPs/Powers could stop at Jokull and see the drum. If Catastrophe hears about how realistic it is from Jaaws, then he might come back to Jokull and decide to orchestrate the construction of an exact replica of it so as to create a scheme in which he [covertly] makes it known and surrounds it in circumstances that make it seem real--potentially with the help of Jaaws, who could get Whist to create a mist creature that resembles Sylvia/her powers. (So basically, the next big event, like a ball/flea market/maybe a sports event :P) It would serve as a trap to get the Resistance or FAFA or somebody out in the open. The chaos would be a good time for some big plot advancement, like an attack by Catastrophe's army on an important place or something similar. And during that, Jaaws could find Sylvia and 'adopt' her foal (which was a plot idea we talked about a while ago), and Sylvia could free the Powers from the Brazen Goo and they could start working against Catastrophe/Jaaws again.

OKAY I'M HERE. Note: this is a little bit before Hazel C.'s post of Jaaw's thoughts on Demise.

Demise~

Jaaws jumps into the air, then circles back around.

"Oh, you don't have wings. A pity. I guess foot will have to do. You'd better be fast." I smile and plant my claws into the ground. The sinister crackle of ice pervades me, and two thick tubes faintly reminiscent or cannon barrels form on my shoulders. I check their flexibility, turning them to face side-to-side, up and down. Jaaws squints at them. "I don't remember those." With a tinge of pride, I engage them. Icy wind streams out of them, lifting me gently off the ground. Looking down apon my accomplice, I hover there.

"You wouldn't. Even the scientist who helped me take my shape didn't know. I figured it out for myself. Shall we?" Still squinting, Jaaws nods.

We fly a few miles before either of us says anything. Jaaws is the first to break the silence.

"I thought you were terminated after the first disconnection." I know exactly what she's referring to.

"No. I am not dependant upon the activities of those I hunt."

"If not dormancy, what happened to you?"

"Why do you care?"

"Curiosity. I thought you were mortally flawed."

"I was. My mortal flaw was the scientist. His mortality was affecting my immortality, so I killed him. The lifeblood that spilled from him killed the mortal part in me. Therefore, I am no longer as vulnerable. After that, I followed everything the Powers did very closely. I came a claw's breadth to killing Lunee and Sylvia... Then I went out of commission. I simply... stopped. You could say I disappeared from the face of this world, caught in a place between reality and dream. I don't know what happened there, nor why it happened. It had no connection to the Powers, nor was I hurt..."

Jaaws~

"Intriguing," Jaaws replied. "Your experience does seem similar to my own. When did you emerge from your...limbo?"

----

Well, uh, that has to be the shortest plot continuation in the world. But I didn't know if Demise had more to say.

Would you like them to arrive at Jökull during or after the battle with the Sanukans?

Demise~

"I'm not sure. Time staggers for me now. I black out sometimes; I may not even remember this conversation by the time I "wake up". It's inconvenient like that, but I guess it's recorded somewhere... Vague memories to unlock and all that and-the-like." I snarl.

Hey no judgement sometimes short posts are all you can do. :|

Jaaws and Demise lapsed into silence until the only sound around them was their breathing and the whistle of the wind. The silence stretched long into the flight, but it communicated more than an onlooker would have thought. Subtle shifts in mood, and an assurance that Jaaws and Demise had secrets to keep.

Jaaws put her curiosities about Demise out of mind for the moment. They were almost to Jokull, and she wondered if they would find the Power there or not.

Ready for them to arrive? We can move over to the Two Kyngdoms thread now.

Ayearth~

I moved quickly, the current pushing me faster through the cool water. As I passed, the animals residing parted, leaving my way clear.

Not much longer to Jokul. I told myself. And it wouldn't hurt to stop in the Secret Forest...

My body swivled slightly, and my claws caught on soft river bed. I pulled myself out, gazing at the looming trees around me. The glory of the forest seemed to surround me like the pressure of deep sea.

I began to walk, clumsily at first because of the miles of swimming I had done. I brushed past a pine, my scales making an odd sound as I did so. As I contintued forwards, I sensed movement. A talent I had aqquired during the years I had spent in my glory, the air seemed to push agaist my left.

I turned, and saw a small flash of white.

Could it be?

A small part of me broke from Jaaws hold.

It could be Sylvia, my sister, my family. I had watched her emerge from the Mother Flower. She'd been kind, caring, and had given life and magic.

Find her. Jaaws voice seemed to echo in my head. Love is your greatest weakness. Fight it.

I trotted after the moving pressure of air, now ignoring my own screaming in my mind to not hurt her, not to touch her and just leave her.

But I strided forwards, now nearly running.

I could smell her, I could feel her, I could hear her... and... and something else.

A smaller presence.

And they came into my sight.

It was Sylvia... and a small, white-as-snow foal.

~~~
You can do it from Sylvia's point of view, I guess? I don't really intend Ayearth to get to her, but if anyone wants that to happen.... let me know?
Cairan, the foal, is as black as tar, not white. ;)
Annnnd while we're on the topic, I cannot remember--did we make it male or female?
Male. Ciaran is a male name, and it means 'Darkness' or 'Dark One.'
Heh, sorry about that. Change white-as-snow to black-as-coal if you wish.
No problem! I did stuff like that all the time when I had just started on Kyngdom. I still do, occasionally. ;)
In-universe, Cairan, though it is also a Scottish word meaning 'dark-haired', descends from the Kaania word kahira "divide, division, part" + na "living thing"; hence, Sylvia may have meant by her choice "a one of divide(s)". Kaania is the Lingua Franca of Kyngdom, since most of the languages near the sea descend from it, like French, Spanish, Italian, etc. descend from Latin, so it is more readily understood by all. For people with black-haired characters, the words for black in Kaania are Osi and Dyyni, whch give rise in descendant languages to the names Os, Osa, Osin, Osan, Osana, Diinja, Diina, Diinin, Diinina, and others; Osa, Diinja, and Diinina are reasonably common names. You might also go with La'a'pihimi, which is the Kaania name for the 'dark river' in the Kingdom night sky, a twisting line which contains no stars and divides the two classes of summer constellations.
The in-universe language of Kyngdom is English.
I do not mean to sound rude, but please be very careful.when world-building so that you do not adjust or change any decided parts of Kyngdom. Much of Kyngdom's culture has already been decided and has been voted on and used as the main story for quite some time. Again, I don't mean to sound rude, but please be courteous of everything we've already created. Thank you.
Let me hasten to apologize if I have sounded overbearing or anything. I didn't consider that a person might like to decide what his own character's name means. And I forgot to mention that most humans don't speak Kaania. That said, the in-universe animal language of Kyngdom is not english.
Firstly, though we write out the character's lines in english, since we are english speakers, there has never been any claim that the in-universe languages were english. Rather the opposite; the humans are supposed to not be able to understand the animals readily. If the animals spoke English they could speak with just anybody. In one instance a post refered to 'fox chitter'; Claaws said that his real, original name was unpronouncable by humans; there are numerous other points.
Secondly, the names of a great number of the characters obviously originate from a non-english language. Even Cairan originates from Scottish. and what english source would you say Ayearth, Piiri, Ecio, etc. come from?
I have spent some time making the language of Kaania. I purposely based it on the un-englishy names invented by the Kyngdom writers. I know I'm on to something, because some of the words I concieved have also been used as names by unrelated kyngdomites; for instance, Akana "human" has turned up as a name for a snake; Kristjana "Christian", which was one of the first names I came up with has a look-alike Kristjan, which is a name for a character in the Power of Hoof. note how the -tj-has turned up in both mine and another person's writing.
Finally, I should say that having an interior language would be a thing most useful to Kyngdomites. The culture of Kyngdom is extremely sketchy. However, a uniting animal languagewhich names- meaningful names- can be drawn from would be a great asset to Kyngdom; it would allow people to immerse themselves more fully in the world, and be able to create names that are actually Kyngdom, and can only belong to Kyngdom. Also, since there are many languages in Kyngdom, it would not restrict anyone's creativity as it comes to names, or anything else.Though I may have overstepped my authority here, it is certain that you can call the Bog & Burrow Inn the Gavu P'ne does not detract from it, any more than a Welsh person calling it Tafarn y Gors a'r Twll. Language is free.
I understand, although the only problem with your theory is the fact that there have been lines in Kyngdom written in other languages. And anyways, most of the names you drew reference to were human names. Kaania is the animal language, as you said, and humans can't understand it, as you said, so why would human names have anything to do with the animal language?
Besides, animals do not all speak the same language. Birds do make the same noise as a cow, correct? Also, I believe what was meant by 'fox chitter ' was the chittering noises foxes make.
Again, I do not mean to sound rude and it is quite impressive you created a language for Kyngdom. Perhaps Kaania could be the language of a land beyond Kyngdom's borders, if you wish to still use it.
Monsieur, I completely respect your opinion but I can't see your problem. I want us to understand each other. I'm pretty sure if you understand me you'll agree with what I'm trying to do.
In the beginning of Kyngdom, as you probably know, the Admins instated the Cypher, which was a a letter-to-letter code for English. Now, I view this as a sort of a compromise between what the reality would be, and what was necessary to keep the transactions between humans and animals simple. But the Cipher is a bit clumsy and has fallen into disuse. I view Kaania as an updated version of this, though still imperfect. Not that people will have to learn it, or use it, but that they will have the option of incorporating it. Of course, the animals have their home languages. Kaania, as I stated, is an interlanguage that allows animals to communicate among each other and with humans who learn it. It also carries some religious significance, since it is similar to the language used by the Powers before they were killed.
The people who made all those names like Jij and Caelani were actively
looking for a culture and lingual history separate from English. If you're offended with me for creating one, maybe you're offended with them as well. Maybe this is a question for the
Admins. At any rate, I intend to bring some of the nitty-gritty in
Kyngdom into fuller focus. But, creating ideas within the framework of other
people's thoughts is one of the main purposes of Kyngdom, and a complex
world makes for better stories (see The Lord of the Rings for
confirmation).
You argued that I am changing things. I am not changing things, I am only
bringing things to fuller focus. I won't make any more blunders like I did with "Cairan". I am only going where no one has gone
before me, and creating a thing that everyone has imagined but not had
the determination to make, based on the things that they have made. Just an instance: I found the name Xione in the Who's There? section as the name for an old rooster, the nemesis of that Kyngdomer's main character. The word agreed very well with Kaania, so I made the word xione "old one, elder", which has a negative connotation. From that I derived the adjective xioni "senile, weak.", which is very negative.
Again, I made sure this language is not limiting in any way, and though it may have seemed that way at first because I was tactless, I see absolutely no reason that I should not make it. Maybe we see Kyngdom in different ways. I'd like to know about the way you see Kyngdom, because I just don't get it. grahdIf you reply, can you do it to my first comment since I don't want these boxes to get too thin?
