The Tale of Jaden Selesky
"Calm down, Jaden." My frightened and angry eyes look up at Arin, a masker who just turned sixteen, officially two years older than me. She sighs. "It happens to all of our kind."
"Not Master Irvo," I almost shout in indignation. The guards shift in their positions, glancing at me with a warning.
"Shh," Arin says hurriedly, fear flashing across her face. That shuts me up. Arin, usually so confident, so proud and determined, was scared. “Although Master Irvo is well trusted by the king, he is watched aslo. You may not see them, but guards are stationed near him at all times. Jaden, I know you are upset about all of this new stuff, but you still need to treat all the masters, guards, and royalty with complete respect. Start acting up and they’ll put you under watch early. I’m warning you, you don’t want that to happen.” I stare at her. She looks away, not meeting my gaze. The silence between us smothers my fire of turbulent emotion.
“All right,” I say, saddened and confused by this new Arin.
“Thanks,” She murmurs quietly. Slowly, she stands up. “I need to get ready for border enforcement. 16 brings new responsibilities.”
As she begins to walk away, I call out, anxious to see a bit of the old Arin, if only for a moment. “Arin,”
She turns, worry weighing on her like the king’s bags of gold. “Yes, Jaden?”
“Are you still going to try the highland pepper?” It’s an old dare we came up with, a silly dispute from nearly a year ago.
She grins, laughter in her eyes, “Try and stop me.” I break out into a smile, relieved. As long as Arin is there to joke around with, I believe I can endure almost anything.

Hey everybody! Apprentice here. I’ve been pretty busy lately. My family has a lot of hospitality around the holidays. Anyway, this post is going to be speeding things up for Jaden. Totally a filler...

For weeks now I have been sneaking into the secret room beneath the library when I can. The Observations and Contemplations of Young Masker Wayne has taught me much more about the art of Kryften than I could ever possibly learn with Arin. With this knowledge, I am now able to not only easily levitate myself, but also telepathically lift other objects as well. I can cause objects to disappear into a personal void and then bring them back when they are needed. There are many other abilities that I have not yet mastered, but the most interesting thing is this. If you remember, when I first came to know of the secret room, I was able to turn the “slide” into stairs. This is because it was made of a certain stone called kyresite. If my information is accurate, the entire kingdom of Audorus was built on a large foundation of kyresite. The castle is made of it, the government buildings are made of it, and even simple village huts are made of kyresite brick. Kyresite contains some element that empowers the magically minded to mold it according to their will! If every Masker knew of this, we could easily overthrow the current monarchy. Unfortunately, there was no information on how to telepathically communicate, and guards are constantly listening into the conversations between Arin and I. I keep trying, sending her thought messages as we pass by in the corridors of the palace, but I’m never really sure if it works. Most of the time she’ll look up at me, a confused expression on her face. For instance, yesterday, I tried, Meet me in the library after the third meal. She nodded at me as we passed, but I’m not sure if that was just a greeting or a conformation. She didn’t show up if you’re wondering, but I’m going to keep trying.
