My soul-keeper glows white in my hands, which are also glowing white, feeding the crystal, making it, and inversely me, stronger. The tree I'm sitting in is a pine, tall, dark, and handsome, like the boy I hope I can eventually share my immortality with. With a sigh, I stare out from the branches at The other Nocturnals swarming to their studies. As members of the Nocturnal, we, well, mostly they, have chosen to dedicate their lives to the study and record all known occurences of Lunee or her presence in history. I remember talking to her, but that was so long ago, nobody remembers it anymore. Nobody else, anyway. Other than me, no one knows about the time when Lunee would come to the Passings of Moon to dedicate and congradulate the new leaders of the Nocturnal.

It's been awhile since I've had time to come to the Temple. The Homo Aquarians were concerned about Catastrophe attacking Palua, so we hired an immense jungle dragon to protect our city. The dragon was friendly and he said he would, but we then had to find a way to pay him. We settled on providing him pearls and food, but then he decided he wanted us to make the pearls into jewelry, and so on.
But finally, I'm back at the Temple. I'm lucky to have Advisor Takoomi to rule the kingdom while I'm gone.

I forgot how amazing it was to feel the cool, magical stones of the Temple under your feet. They were enchanted long ago to make those that walk on them feel calm and clear-minded.
A Priestess walks up to me. They are an ice wolf from the North. A blue necklace decorated with small moons marks them as one of us.
She smiles. "Welcome back, Kosomi! It's been awhile. And good thing you arrived now--I was just about to call a meeting." The icewolf is named Seze. She's one of the Head Priests, and her job is to call meetings and keep track of all members whereabouts.
She also makes sure that the Nocturnal remain hidden from the rest of Kingdom, a decision made long ago by Crystal Permafrost when B.I.G came. We'd already started to withdraw from the world, but then we completely went underground.
"Oh, good. I'm finally not late for something!" I reply. Seze laughs, then continues on. Seze is a special wolf, for she was born with the power to speak the human language as well.
She leaps up onto a marble dais with a bue painting of Lunee on its surface, the Summons stone. This is where Seze calls for meetings, and where new members used to have to stand when the New Moon ceremony(the ceremony we held to welcome new members) was taking place. But we don't get new members anymore.
Seze howls to get everyone's attention. The Priests and Priestesses all gather around her.
"There is going to be a meeting in the Hall of Gathering, in five minutes. Make sure you're there."
We all nod our heads or murmur agreement. The majority of us head towards the Hall of Gathering.

The Hall is huge. There is a circular pool, with a mosiac Lunee for its bottom. Around the glowing pool are cusuions of many sizez, shapes and colors. I sit down on a dark green one with golden tassels.
The Priest on my right is a tall man looking to be from the desert, due to his clothing. The Priestess on my my left is a young girl whose name is Sancta. I have heard that she is something known as the soulbeng, an ancient being with power over souls.
The Head Priests sit on one end. Seze begins to speak.
"Priests and Priestesses, we believe we have discovered who the Guardian of the Power of Howl is."

My ears prick. The Power of Howl? Impossible. The Nocturnal helped hide it long ago... But I can feel it. Lunee is stirring. Her guardian is nearing. Soon, Lunee will once again walk upon Kyngdom's soil. When I see her, I will say... What will I say? Suddenly, a voice sounds in my head.
"Hello, apprentice. Good to see you haven't been broken after all this time." I fall into a deep silence, communing with my friend. I didn't know she considered me her apprentice.
"Lunee... I feel you close. Where is the Powerfriend? Will she be able to activate you?"
"I do not know. She is needed, but maybe you will be as crucial as she is in my awakening." Though I know she cannot see me, I squint.

"Good. Thank you." I stand. "Kosomi, I-" Should I tell them that Lunne can talk to me? I decide against it. "I don't think we'll be needing much for this trip. I doubt the Guardian wil be far, especially is Lunee is stirring." She nods, smiling, but I can see a hint of confusion in her eyes. Shoot. I'll have to be careful until Lunee awakens. Then she can tell them, if she so wishes.
"Head to the North-East. My guardian will be waiting." I almost nod, but I catch myself.
"You are dismissed to pack." The ice-wolf says promptly. Kosomi and I acknowledge and head to our respective dwellings to get some things together.

It's almost dawn. I would have preferred to travel under the light of the moon and the stars, but with the state Kyngdom is in nobody thought that would be a particularly safe idea. Kosomi hauls her backpack, specially altered to fit her four arms, onto her scaled back. The air is fresh and crisply frigid, and snow threatens to fall from the unsusually thick cirrus clouds above our heads. Seze nuzzles Kosomi's hip, a friendly gesture. She does the same to me, leaving the slightest scent of frozen pine needles in her wake.
"Seze, I leave the members of the Nocturnal in your care while I am gone." Kosomi unwraps two moonstone pendants from a cloth and hangs one on Seze's moon necklace, hanging the other on a strap around her own neck. "This will allow you to commune with me if need be. Keep in mind that, the more you use it, the more it craves the moonlight, so be sure to place it in Lunee's sight after each use." Seze gently touches the pendant with a tentative paw. Then, looking up at us, she rears up on her hind legs and presses her paws together, the blessing pose of the Nocturnal.
"May your travel be swift." She blesses.
"And may Lunee light your path." The members watching finish. Kosomi's and I press our hands (both pairs for Kosomi) together and bob our heads in reply, the common fashion for accepting a Nocturnal blessing.

Sancta and I set out just before dawn. The woods are quiet and we follow an old, overgrown path, leading to the place Seze believed the Guardian was located --a grove just on the other side of the Secret Forest. We expected to arrive at the grove in two day's time.
The first streak's of the sun's light land gently on the forest canopy, turning the sky a warm pinkish orange color.
"Oh, the sky looks--" I am suddenly interrupted by the sound of many footsteps. They sound like they are on the other side of the nearby lake. It sounds like...marching.
"That's odd." Sancta says. "Why would anybody decide to march around out in the middle of the woods?"
" I'll go see what's going on from.in the water. " I tell Sancta. I hand her my backpack.
I dive into the cool lake waters, resurfacing about halfway across it. On the other side, I can make out figures marching. Many figures. Probably close to a hundred.
I swim back under and climb onto a rock jutting out of the water, doing my best to keep hidden. I now see that the figures are wearing unmistakable black and red uniforms--it's Catastrophe's army.

Kosomi's face troubles me. She dives, trying to be discreet, and heads for our shore. She resurfaces moments later, swiftly pulling me down to the ground under a bush.
"Catastrophe's men. Don't. Move." The last part didn't need to be said. I slow my breathing, afraid that even the slightest movement could alert the soldiers. One soldier, a wolf-like beast in a tight uniform, glances around. To my horror, his attention catches as his sharp eyes reach our bush. He lifts his gun and fingers the trigger, growling. I hear Kosomi's breathing stop, and realize that I, too, am holding my breath.
"Close your eyes, Sancta. He can see your eyes." Of course! He must be able to see their glow! I shut my eyes tight. The marching fades. Kosomi breaths again.
"They're gone. The wolf shrugged and kept marching soon after you closed your - oh. Of course he did." She says, smiling and brushing dead leaves from her clothes and the dirt from her scales. We stand up and begin to walk away. Something moves in the corner of my eye.
BANGBANG - CRACK!
I grab Kosomi and throw her to the ground just in time. There are two bullet holes in the tree next to us, but I don't notice them before a massive explosion of white fire destroys the wolf and the forest surrounding. Kosomi jumps up.
"That fire - I could feel it pass through me... What was that?" I sigh.
"My automatic defense mechanism." I kick a completely-dead-in-every-way tree branch out of my sight.
"Details?" Kosomi crosses her arms. I wince.
"I destroy the life force of everything in a fairly large area, with the exceptions of the things or persons," I indicate Kosomi, who is surprisingly calm, with a hand, "That are under my protection. I hate it, but it's engrained into me. Recently I've been trying to find a way to protect the innocent creatures and plants that are destroyed in the process, but, obviously, without much luck."
"hMmm." Kosomi coughs to hide her voice break, but I already heard it. She gives me a highly apologetic look. I shrug.
"You're good." I sigh. "Let's go."

"You're good," Sancta says with a sigh, " Let's go. "
I glance up at the sun, which has now risen. It looks as if we'd lost about an hour. If we still wanted to reach the glade by tomorrow evening we would have to hurry.
We step over dead branches and bushes. All the trees in the surrounding area no longer give us cover and I don't feel safe. Catastrophe's men are still around here somewhere.
We walk quietly and carefully. In the distance we can hear voices and footsteps.

The sun has set. It's about midnight.
I had been alseep, but something woke me. I have the odd sensation of being watched. Sancta and I had thought we were a safe distance from Catastrophe Army but perhaps we aren't.
Directly to my left I hear a crashing noise. I head towards it. Suddenly there is a noise behind me.
I quickly turn around to face a tall soldier of Catastrophe. There is no time for me to defend myself. They hit my head--quite hard--with the end of their gun, and all goes dark.

I sit under the moon and the stars, gazing up at them.
"They are beautiful, are they not?" Lunee sits beside me, almost one and a half times my height and positively stunning in the moonlight. I smile. Lunee's regality almost radiates from her, giving me a sense of security I haven't felt since she was sealed away.
"Yes. They are beautiful... It's been lonely without you, Lunee. I joined the Nocturnal as a lower member, but they promoted me to High Priestess." Lunee smiles at me, a smug but proud look on her muzzle.
"... Again." She laughs as I sigh. "The past repeats itself often, Sancta." I nod thoughtfully. Suddenly, a cry that sounds like Kosomi's scream rips through the air. Lunee looks at me. "Your friend is in trouble. Help her." I'd already jumped up to obey, but Lunee places a paw on my shoulder. "And remember the creature within!"
I wake just in time to see a soldier bearing Catastrophe's mark plunge the butt of his gun right into Kosomu's forehead. She goes limp in another soldier's arms. One stands over me, watching my face.
"This one's awake!" He shouts, alarmed. He should be. Immediately, I grab his throat and whip him to the ground, where he lays still. The others, there are nine, look at me like I just killed the man, which I didn't. He's just unconscious. I activate my powers, creating a dome that seals them from taking Kosomi. With a growl, I summon soul-charged spikes to fly to their throats, but not to puncture. Not yet, anyway.
"Give me my friend." I command. She slithers to the soldiers' feet, still limp. "Go, but before you do I'd like to I form you that if you tell anyone about us then I shall find you and kill you. Got that?" They nod, fear very clear in their eyes. "Good. You may leave." I drop the dome and the spikes. One steps back. Another follows suit. Then, they turn tail and run, just after one grabs his sleeping comrade. I rush to Kosomi, checking her pulse and her breath. I put my hand to her lips and breathe a sigh of relief when I feel the small air current flowing rhythmically in and out of her mouth.

To my surprise, I awaken in the arms of Sancta and not in a prison cell.
"Are the soldiers here! Are they gone?" I stumble over my words as they pour from my mouth , tumbling over each other.
"Calm down. The soldiers are gone. I dealt with them. But it's morning, and we've got to get going. We are extremely behind schedule," Sancta says. She helps me up, and we begin walking .

It is midday. The sun beats down on us as we walk up the tall hill separating the Secret Forest and the Great Forest. In the distance you can see two craggy peaks rising into the sky--Meek Peak and Bleak Peak.
"It's quite beautiful," I say.
" Yes, it is. The perfect sort of day to find Lunee's guardian. " Sancta agrees. "But we must hurry, so Catastrophe's soldiers don't get there first."

Murmurs of surprise flicker around the room. Lunee? After how many years, Lunee may soon return?
Next to me, Sancta seems to be deep in thought. After a few moments, she snaps back to reality.
"Lunee is coming," She whispers , with a strong certainty. It's almost as if Lunee herself has told Sancta she is coming.
And perhaps she has. You never know.
Seze barks to gather the attention of the Nocturnal. "We have selected two people to go out and find the Guardian."
"We have chosen Kosomi Ramabasa and Sancta Anima."

To my surprise, I awaken in the arms of Sancta and not in a prison cell.
"Are the soldiers here! Are they gone?" I stumble over my words as they pour from my mouth , tumbling over each other.
"Calm down. The soldiers are gone. I dealt with them. But it's morning, and we've got to get going. We are extremely behind schedule," Sancta says. She helps me up, and we begin walking .

It is midday. The sun beats down on us as we walk up the tall hill separating the Secret Forest and the Great Forest. In the distance you can see two craggy peaks rising into the sky--Meek Peak and Bleak Peak.
"It's quite beautiful," I say.
" Yes, it is. The perfect sort of day to find Lunee's guardian. " Sancta agrees. "But we must hurry, so Catastrophe's soldiers don't get there first."
