Chatterbox: Inkwell

Hi...this is a Bellatrix Lestrange fanfiction I'm working on.  This is only the introduction.  I'd love any critiques you have for it.  Thanks!

If she had been born in a coffin, with a baptismal splash of ashes, she couldn’t have given her mother a better excuse to die.  But her mother clung weakly to life instead, not quite knowing how to die.  Bellatrix was the youngest of three girls and an ugly baby.  Her eyes were dark and heavily lidded and she was born completely bald.  Within a few weeks she grew a heavy fringe of dark straight hair around her head.  A few well-meaning aunties remarked that the hair changed her from looking like a rather pale egg into looking like a rather hairy eggplant.  Unfortunately that was true.  Her hair, which by the time she was six months old had grown to hang down her back like a hood, was the color of a ripe eggplant.  Later it would darken. Druella Black was never the same after giving birth to her third and last child.  She stayed in bed for eight months while the nurse chased after Narcissa and dealt with Bella.  Druella always wanted to see her youngest girl, and would hold her and sing to her like she never did with her two other girls.  Her husband spent much of his time gambling in the dark hallowed rooms under Knockturn Alley.  When he came home smelling of ale he would sink into a lethargic trance.  After a few days it would break and he vanished to his work at the Department of Mysteries.  A week later he would be at Knockturn Alley again.
