Ever thought of

Ever thought of making things different than what most people think of things? If you know what I mean. For example, read the Hunger Games. Lots of people think of the future as better than now. But the Hunger Games make it seem worse or harder for some people.

What if we made the stepmom the nice one for once?

What if fairies were the evil ones?

What if sharks were friendly?

Or gators and crocs were the ones minding their own buisness?

I hope that made sense....

But gators and crocs do mind their own business!

Okay, sorry. Just had to say that. ;) But it is true. They don't actually eat humans unless they have nothing else to eat--alright, I'm not saying no crocodilian has ever gotten a bit too opportunistic and attacked without reason--in fact, it's certainly happened--but when you consider how many crocodilians humans have killed without good reason,it more than balances out. And of coure the mothers will attack anything that comes near their eggs, but that's just paranoia, not malevolence, and besides, the humans in question aren't exactly 'minding their own'business if they do. Well, they are, usually, but howwould a reptile know that?

Okay, sorry again. I know you didn't mean anything by that. Heh. But it just irritates me when people make these sorts of assumptions. Anyway, I live near plenty of alligators and I haven't heard of anyone being attacked... not that that makes a difference. This really wasn't called for. I'll stop now. I won't even try to defend sharks or mention that dystopias have been around for quite a long time, or--*says no more*

Not that I'm trying to be rude or anything. In most literrature, alligators are depicted as, well, not minding their own business, so you're actually right. I wasn't directing that bit at you, really, just at the people who always have to perpetuate those stereotypes. Seeing that you were advocating going against them, saying it to you in particular wouldn't even make sense. I just had to say it anyway... But :) !

Anyway, I do love this kind of thing! Breaking free from/adding twists to cliches, I mean. You can do all sorts of things with them and make whatever you write much more original. Do you know what I need to do? Make a list of cliches and reverse them in my writing. I think I'll enjoy that. I should do it sometime... But it can be very annoying when the opposite of something overused becomes overused itself. The 'vampires who don't drink blood' thing is one example...

That's a very good idea! In realistic fiction, (one example is in The Worry Website by Jaqueline Wilson, except I'm not sure I'm spelling her name correctly) I've seen some nice step moms, but not as much in fairy tales...
