I've started a new story. Please comment. I am currently on page 37- Chapter Eight.

One. The Stranger in the Storm.

On top of the sky-scraping hill that had become my whole world, our small, dilapidated house crouched low against the howling winds and pelting rain. We huddled close, my baby brother Josh, and I, underneath a threadbare quilt upon the sodden floor in order to escape the biting cold early spring was capable of. The drafty wind had long blown out the candles with a strong, wet, gale, and an ominous wisp of gray smoke, so now in the late hours of night only the occasional bolt of jagged lightning that cast the room in eerie shadow brought forth a temporary, fleeting light. Our rooms were flooded and there was no electricity, so we could not sleep in our warm beds, but I doubt we would've wanted to. The thunder roared and boomed like an exploding firework, an angry moster lurking in the  pouring, frozen rain. My brother squealed in terror and wriggled down farther under the thin comfort the damp blanket brought. I wished I could do the same, but as I was thirteen and thusly, the older brother, Josh expected me to be the barve one who chased the shadows and monsters away.

Of course, there was Ted.

My mother's boyfriend stood apart from the two of us, his eyes cast out the window, watching the trees thrash in a wild frenzy. No doubt waiting for my mother to come home.

All in vain.

Wow! That made me want to read more! It's really good. I like how you gave it an air of mystery with the storm and the mother being gone. And you leave just enough out at the end with "All in vain" that the reader can't help but be curious about what's happened to the mother.
