what would be the motive for them to close the barrier?

Maybe it's less that they're trying to close the barrier, but they're taking magic from the barrier to make themselves more powerful and by taking magic from it they're slowly closing it. But maybe it's not on accident, like they know that it's happening and are doing it anyway.
