Writing Group!

Basically, anyone can join, and just exchange writing for critiques and such. Inspire ideas for characters and world building, maybe. Poetry is also fine.

I'd like to join, I guess? I write stories and also poetry occasionally. Maybe I'll post something later.

This sounds awesome! May I join? I'm currently writing a bunch of different stories in fantasy and sci-fi worlds and need help with some ideas, as well as some advice for them.

Of course! What ideas do you need? For the worldbuilding, plot, characters, etc.?

I have two projects that I need some help or advice with. One is a fantasy series that I have started. It already has 47 pages and a developed world. I'm just trying to develop my characters more and give them more dimensions. One is a character that's mean and prickly on the outside, but cares about others and just wants friends. I'm trying to include glimpses of their inner side and give them some character development, but I don't really know how to do it.

The other project is about a sci-fi type school (like Cosmonious High) and I’m trying to figure out the other characters. It deals with different galaxies and alien characters, and I need some help with designs and ideas for them.

with aliens, (and i've written a fair share of aliens) I like to imagine how a creature would rationally evolve on a planet with significantly different laws of nature. but it really depends on the aesthetic. i like little green guys as much as i like things with no backbones and no eyes that still have a culture. they are good in different ways.

when it comes to characterizations, i recommend coming up with as much information about them as possible. what's their favorite band, their favorit food, how many siblings do they have, what was the name of their first childhood friend, what's their favorite color, what's the scent of the soap dispenser in their bathroom, little things like that. you never need to tell the reader any of this, but the more you as the author know, the more real your characters will feel.

character developement is hard to write, someone more talented than me will probably say it better than i could.

For characters, it helps to do character info sheets, like I do, to get a better idea of who they are as a person. For example, their background! What's causing them to be mean and prickly? Knowing those details can help in developing the character slowly overtime (though I'm pretty bad at character development lol. it always seems too abrupt).

For different galaxies, you can research about existing galaxies (like the Andromeda galaxy) and different types of galaxies to get an idea of what it looks in there. It helps to just set aside time to doodle ideas and design for the characters and galaxies. You could also use inspiration from existing animals to create your alien characters. Things like that can help.

Thank you so much for the suggestions! For the aliens, there are a wide variety of biomes the characters are from, so I will probably base them on that. Probably with a special feature unique to their home, and yeah, probably should research other galaxies.

For my character development, I have a set plan what causes their prickliness (trauma and loss of a loved one), but I should probably include some ideas and plot things out for them

yea, traumatizing your characters is an interesting experience.

it's also a great way to project your own problems onto another surface, and deal with them in a less personally damaging way!

which might actually be a problem now that i think about it.

Hey, does anyone have advice for how to write a name change for your character? In the current story I'm writing, there is a character who goes by Chance, but that the main character has called Chauncy for her whole life. I want her to gradually start refering to him as his nickname as the novel progresses to represent their eventual bonding (they start off disliking each other). Any ideas for how to do this without making the transition awkward?

Maybe you could have her just slowly start sprinkling he name Chance (the nickname?) into her dialogue and thoughts slowly. Like maybe have the main character go back and forth between the names in her thoughts but gradually use more the nickname.

Oh yes. Please, I need help on where my story should go (Here:http://www.cricketmagkids.com/chatterbox/inkwell/node/552092). I might add a plot twist, but I'm also thinking of adding a new character. The recent characters need to explore some more, ig. Maybe I need to move to the Creature...

Help please. :)
