Chatterbox: Inkwell

Level Up [Solo

Level Up [Solo Write]

You wake up startlingly. It's sudden, like you've been drenched in a bucket of ice water. The colors are too vivid, the air is too cold, and the wind is much, much too loud.

The wind?

Groaning, you sit up. Even the slightest movement makes your head pound, your limbs ache. It feels like stepping on shattered glass. You squint, trying to get your eyes to adjust to the blinding light. After a few moments, it begins to fade into a color you recognize.

Blue.

It's the sky.

You open your eyes wider, the biting wind drawing tears from them, and glance around. You seem to be on a floating metal cube, the surface cool beneath your fingers. You look over the edge and gasp.

Hundreds, if not thousands, of other metal cubes float beneath and above you.

Where am I?

Down below, you can see that the other cubes have people, waking up, just like you. You look around, trying to remember. Who are you? Where did you come from? Why are you here?

You draw a blank on every question.

Suddenly, there's a crackle of static, and a green holographic screen pops up in front of you. You're too stunned to even react.

The screen reads:

[Current Objectives]

1. Enter the [PORTAL] in the center.

2. Level up.

It reminds you of a video game. You're not sure how you know what a video game is, or what video games you've played before, but somehow you know how to play this one.

You squint and yes, right there in the center, there's a ripple of green in the air, something that seems to defy physics and warp the very space around it. You're sure of it. That's the portal.

Then how do you get down there?

—

MBTI is kind of like those ever-abundant personality tests, only it's an official-ish thing made by pyshcologists. You can find a website with a test online, which you can fill out, answering as you character would answer.

I'm just gonna sign up as myself. >:P

[SPECIAL POWERS]: I am a seer---which is to say, I am able to see the future. It does tire me, though, if I have too many visions. I can peer into the future, and this doesn't tire me, but when visions come upon me unexpectedly, I do become tired. Unexpected vision side effects include: panting, slower movement, fainting at dramatic times--but  I will not die.

[Prologue]

Vox glances down at the floating screen in front of him, smirking.

It reads:

i. Your [CLASS] has been Autoselected due to inactivity.

ii. Selected: [Telekinetic]

iii. Skills granted: [Telekinesis, Lv. 1], [Levitation, LOCKED], [Passive Matter Detection, LOCKED]

He can see the green screens popping up in front of everyone else as they wake up, the city of cubes awakening. And maybe he has no right to be smiling—there aren’t any objects to use telekinesis on, after all. And he can’t use his Levitation when it’s locked. But Vox is smart. He’s a quick learner. What he needs to do is get himself to that portal.

And why wouldn’t telekinesis work on himself?

They jump up and down to warm up, their limbs stiff from the biting wind. He swipes on the screen, and a new screen appears.

In order to activate your powers, all you must do is select the skill you would like to use, and think [ACTIVATE]. [Telekinesis, Lv. 1] allows you to control objects up to 10 KG.

Vox swipes that one away too, and focuses. Telekinesis isn’t strong enough to lift his enter body, but it is enough to levitate something smaller. Like his shoes.

He makes sure his shoes are securely tied (the last thing he wants is to fall into the void below), and thinks, [ACTIVATE].

Suddenly, his vision shifts. He can see selections, skipping by, all red. He ignores the heavier objects, and focuses on his shoes. After a few faltering starts, they lift up into the air, sending Vox tilting backwards. He tries to force himself upright, but instead, he goes swinging much too far forward, straight over the edge of the metal box.

Thinking quickly, Vox mentally yanks the shoes away further, narrowly missing slamming into the box. He barely manages to grin. It’s exhilarating, but also terrifying to be hanging upside-down in midair.

Quickly, Vox thinks. People are already figuring things out. He wills his shoes to shoot towards the portal, and they do, zipping along in the air, wind catching on his hair and sending it whipping around his face.

Vox salutes cheekily at an awestruck person on a metal box, just in time as he twists around to see he’s heading straight for the portal.

Scuttles isn’t sure what his [CLASS] is, or why it’s called a [Insectoid], but he does know that he has a winged juvenile corn snake named Cornelius who is fabulously confident.

“What are you saying?” she asks, tilting her head to listen to Cornelius, who also happens to be wearing a blue bandana.

Cornelius chitters a bit more in insect-speak, which Scuttles can understand surprisingly well. They nod along. “I see, I see. Well why don’t we try it?”

Cornelius flips around, and Scuttles grabs onto either end of him, like a zipline. He’s not sure how Cornelius manages to stay afloat, but he does, and it’s great.

Without further ado, Cornelius takes off, flying towards the portal.

Thorn tries to control her breathing. It’s not working very well. She can feel flowers sprouting out of her hair, leaves poking out of her shoes. It must be because of her [Druid (Dark)] [CLASS]. Apparently the (Dark) makes her class special. She’s not sure why though.

The portal isn’t very far away. Thorn could probably think of a way to get there, if she could just calm down and start breathing properly. Suddenly, something sharp stings her arm, Thorn yelps, looking down. A vine, sprouting out of her hair, has just slapped her on the arm.

But it helps her focus. Thorn waves the vine away, looking at the portal island. It’s not far. Only a little lower down, and only a couple meters away. Just out of jumping range. But …

An idea pops into Thorn’s head, and she gasps. Of course! Why didn’t she think of this earlier?

She’s a druid! That must mean she can control plants!

Thorn glances beside her, to the vine sprouting out of her hair. It has surprising dexterity for a literal plant. She then glances across, to another metal box, directly across the portal. If she can somehow attach the vine there, and then swing across …

“Alright,” Thorn whispers under her breath, “Let’s see how strong plants are.”

Echo blinks slowly, staring at the screen in front of her.

i. Your [CLASS] has been Autoselected due to inactivity.

ii. Selected: [Seer]

iii. Skills granted: [Foresight, Lv. 1], [Forewarn, LOCKED], [Pathmaking, LOCKED]

In order to activate your powers, all you must do is select the skill you would like to use, and think [ACTIVATE]. [Foresight, Lv. 1] allows you to see 10 seconds into the future.

That pathmaking skill sounds quite convenient for this situation, but of course, it just had to be locked. Foresight also sounds like it’d break several laws of physics and independent thought. But whatever, it’s what she’s working with. Echo rolls her eyes, and flips her braid over her shoulder. Experimentally, she activates the foresight skill.

Suddenly, she’s kneeling down, even though she isn’t, she’s still standing, but this mirror version of herself is kneeling down. She’s searching on the metal box. She’s finding a groove in it, tracing a symbol in it. And then …

Echo’s back to Echo. She’s herself again. She’s standing.

Immediately, a wave of nausea rolls over her, and she struggles to fight it down. So that’s how it works.

But then …

Echo decides to try it. She kneels down. Searches on the metal box. Finds a groove. Traces it.

The box suddenly zips forward, hurtling through the air at mach speed to the portal. Echo barely manages to hang onto the edge, almost falling off. But it’s there, and suddenly, she’s right in front of the portal.

They each find themselves in a space much like a void. Everything around them is black.

Except for the screen in front of them.

It’s very simple.

[Current Objectives]

1. Choose the [Trial by fire] or the [Trial by ice]

2. Level up.

Aha! And here comes the user-interaction part! Like the objectives said, it’s very simple. Reply to this comment, and choose either the Trial by fire, or Trial by ice. Do not fret—’tis only a preference of narrative, ie. which one you are more curious about. There are narrative options to continue either way.

And as for Reuby, I’m afraid that you have joined a bit late, so you won’t be appearing in this chapter, but rules are more like guidelines. Never fear, I shall work you in next chapter. Toodaloo!

Ack, sorry I didn't see this! Can't usually get on on weekends. Anyways, bugs have a habit of going into comas when it gets to cold, so Scuttles will go with Trial by fire just to be safe. Plus snakes are cold-blooded, so I don't think Cornelius would appreciate that. Also, Cornelius is a great name for a corn snake!
