That sounds like a cool assignment! I read once that dystopian stories generally imagine a flaw in our society, taken to an extreme. For example, a world where everyone is on their devices all the time; or a world that's extremely polluted where many animals have died out; or a world where rich people rule from their huge estates while everyone else starves on the streets. I don't know if any of that helps, but that's where I would start if I were writing a dystopian story! Good luck!
