Rain
Rain
A short story
________________________
Rain.
Nothing out of the ordinary.
Not that anything about today was ordinary.
The rain was coming down two feet in front of me. I was standing right below the edge of the clouds when the downpour hit.
If I stood here any longer I'd get caught.
Crossing my fingers, I started towards the wall. As I ran, I checked my watch. 5:47.
That means she's late. Not good.
I pressed my fingers along the crack in the wall and watched the hidden door slide open. The high walls surrounded a corridor without a roof, and the black sky pressed down on the cobblestone walls.
"Here we go again," I thought.
I ran through the simple maze and had just made it to the end to be met by a dog. He barked triumphantly and bolted back around the maze before I could catch him.
It was one of the Noble's scent hounds, heading back to report. The moor was flat for miles. I'd never be able to outrun them. I stood and waited, hoping that she'd show up.
Noble.
It's odd to call him that since he's not in more ways than one. He doesn't deserve to be called noble any more than I deserve his 'justice'. One would think that in this day and age, there would be no trace of noblemen, dungeons, or long-running vendettas, but I had experienced all of the above in two days. And that was normal.
Now, the Noble had me.
Waiting, dripping, and completely trapped.
That is, if it weren't for the taxi.
Rumble.
The noble and his men were almost around the wall with their horses.
Pshsh.
My associate's car veered around the potholes in the flooded road.
Rumble.
Pshsh.
"There you are!" the Noble shouted and started charging towards me.
BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP
The taxi's horn blared as Kit got closer...
Screech!
The taxi slowed to a halt as Kit slammed on the brakes.
"Get in," she yelled through the open window.
I didn't need any encouraging.
Kit stomped down the gas and the car began to struggle through the roads.
"After them!" the Noble shouted, and he and his men chased us down the moor, full sprint.
"What's the horsepower for this car?" I asked Kit.
"140."
"Then they're outnumbered. They only have seven horses."
We grinned at each other as the car gained enough momentum. The car shot off across the moor, leaving my distant relative in the dust.
"You haven't seen the last of me!" he shouted, shaking his fist.
"That's for sure," I grumbled.
"Sorry the mission failed," Kit said. "We never thought he'd show up."
"He always shows up." I check my watch. 3:13.
"So, Kit, what's the latest?"
