I've been here

Chatterbox: Inkwell

I've been here

I've been here too long.

I can't remember what the outside looks like.  I hope I can find someone who knows the way out.

My short black hair has grown at least five inches since I got lost.  My brown eyes have turned black, and they're more accepting of the dark than the light.  My power has grown too.  I can almost teleport with how fast I change form.

I'm walking along the too-familiar footpath that I can never seem to find the end of when I see you.  You look at me as if I'm a ghost, and I immediately change form, feeling more comfortable as a shadow.  Not being made of matter feels more natural to me.  You stare at where I was, and from the ground, I stare back at you.  You go over to me and kneel down, a small smile growing on your face, as if you've been waiting your whole life to see someone like me.

But why would anyone?  I've heard powers are remarkably rare, and mine is too weird for anyone to admire.  I stay still, hoping that you don't think I was actually there.

"Are you... real?" You ask hopefully.  It would hurt for me to lie to you.  I stay still for a second as you brush a strand of gold hair out of your crystal-colored eyes.

Suddenly regaining my wits, I change form again.  Probably the most uncomfortable position I've transformed in, underneath you.  "Um, to answer your question, yes.  I am real," I say, barely recognizing my voice.  It's more raspy than I remember, and deeper.  But then I remember I've been in here for an exceedingly long time.  My voice must've changed.

"I'm Ellie.  Nice to meet you!" You say, getting up.  I get up too, not wishing to stay at the level of your knees.  I'm taller than you, probably older.  Your face looks immature, compared to the face I've seen in rivers and puddles, which is more gaunt.

"I'm Shadow.  Do you know the way out of the forest?" You look at me like I'm crazy for a second.  Probably because of my name.  But you shake it off, and regain your poise.

"I do know the way out.  And I've been looking for people like you.  With powers, I mean," You laugh, but I can't seem to find the feelings to do so as well.  I was more confused.

"People...like me?" I asked.  "No one ever wanted to look for someone like me." I look back down at myself.  Tattered, faded, years-too-small blue jeans and a black t-shirt wrapped in a dark blue cape.

You smile.  "Anyone with powers is worth looking for," you say, giving me a little encouragement to look up again.  "Now, c'mon!  You said you wanted out, right?  I can't wait until you meet the others."

The others?  I srug as you turn around and start to follow.  You go off the path, which confuses me.

"Is the way actually off this path?" I ask.

"The path is a loop," You explain.  No wonder I could never find the end.

Sooner than I expect, we come to the edge of the forest to a clearing.  You turn around to face me again, and say, "Welcome to the powerhouse!" I look beyond you and see a log-cabin-looking house with light in the windows.

"Is that where you live?" I ask, pointing to the house.

"Not me," You say, "we."

Before I can ask you what you mean, you grab my wrist and drag me towards the house.  You're much faster than I thought.  You knock on the door before shoving it open and I see two other people.  One looks much younger than me, and has dark brown hair that is flat and shiny.  Wet hair?  The other looks taller than me, but not much older.  Her hair is half black and half white, the lind differenciating the colors centered.  The white side is shorter than the black side.  She has wings that are totally different, one is a silvery-gray pixie wing and the other is a stark white angel wing.

"Who are these people?" I ask you.

"That's Emelie," You say, pointing to the girl with wet hair.  "And that's Analicia!" You finish, pointing to the other girl with half and half hair.

@MJ's Friend - I'm writing more now and this is not related to my personal life.

In this part, you are Emilie.

~~~~~~~~
I wave a little at each of them.  You seem to have a similar reaction to me in this case.
Analicia, however, says, "Hello!  What's your power?  What's your name?  I'm a fairy.  That doesn't only mean I have wings, it means that I can use several forms of magic, though I prefer not to.  It's a rather unusual power."
"It just means she's cooler," Ellie says.  "I'm indestructable!  And Emelie can --"
"Please," You say quietly, "don't reveal my power,"  You walk away into a door that I hadn't seen before.
"Um, okay," Ellie says to you, despite the fact that you've already walked through the door.  She turns back to me, and shrugs.
"Don't do that shrugging thing.  You know exactly why she did that," Analicia cries.  "She's sensitive about her power!  Can you not understand that?" She stands up and points her arm towards the door you left through.
I understand how you would have felt.  Which is why I walked over to the door.
"Shadow, what are you doing?" Ellie asks.
"Something Emelie wouldn't trust you to do," I reply, glaring at her from over my shoulder.  I knock on the door.
"Go away," is your muffled reply.
"I'm Shadow Shift," I introduce myself.
"That's not your real name."
"You're right, it's not.  I can't remember what it was before," I admit.  "Can I come in?"
The door creaks open a little.  I open it just a little more so I can fit, and enter the room with you.  I sit on the floor next to you.  "So I hear you're sensitive about your power."
"Is it that obvious?" You ask, looking up at me.  Your eyes are scared.  Self-consious, I assume.
"N-no, nothing like that!" I say.  "Analicia kinda gave it away when she was yelling at Ellie."
"Analicia!?" You say, surprised.  Your eyes turn a brighter blue.  I think they were glowing.  Your hair seems to get lighter, and it's a minute before I realize it was becoming dry at the bottom and more wet at the top.
"Oh, so that's what your power is," I say.
Your eyes stop glowing when I say that, and you say, "Sorry, I got a little carried away there.  Analicia is normally the one I can trust not to reveal my personal info.  Anyway, what's your power?"
"Oh, me?" I ask.  I immediately change form for a few seconds.
When I change back, you say, "Wow!  That's so cool!"
"Thanks, I guess.  I spent some amount of time in the forest literally just tring to stay alive and practicing," I laugh, and you laugh too.
Ah, that's what I was going to guess, but Doctor Who beat me to it! :)
Maybe it's because you have a very distinct and unique writing style? This is very interesting, by the way. I like it.
Wow Lucy, I loved it! I don't know why, but for some reason I really liked the style that you wrote it in, the way you used "you" as a character. This is a really cool story, and I'd love to hear more!
