Chatterbox: Inkwell

Hello Admins,

This is Josiah, otherwise known on this forum way back when as either Joe Dosie Doe or Joe the Stickfiddler. When I was 14/15/16 I submitted a lot of original ideas around here, and a lot of them were pretty good. I'm still writing (just, not around here) and since then have been thinking about turning some of them into fully-fledged original stories.

However, I wanted to check what the copyright policy was for anything posted here. Do I still own all the stuff I put up here, is it under a Creative Commons or other content license, or are there some terms I might not have been aware of back then which means the content is owned by the Cricket magazine or some other third party? If it was a story written in collaboration with others, would I need to attempt to get permission from those people to use their ideas, credit them in my work, or just not use them at all?

Hi, Joe! It's good to hear from you again. Here's a reply from our permissions department:

Josiah would still own the copyright to any created
content (poems, stories, etc.) he posted on the Chatterbox. Under our
Terms and Conditions, Cricket Media can use that content any way we
like, but Josiah can as well, if it was single-authored.

Ideas cannot be copyrighted (only their expression
can), so any ideas knocked about by the Chatterboxers are fair game for
anybody to use. However, the stories (i.e., the expression of the idea)
are under copyright. If Josiah would like
to submit a story written in collaboration with others on the
Chatterbox as it was originally written, he should get the okay from the
collaborators and credit them accordingly. If Josiah would like to take
the idea and write a new story alone, no permission is needed.
