Rain: A tribute to a dear friend

She stood alone on the rocks, staring at the pouring rain. Droplets falling down, down, down into the sea. A hurricane of sorts, perfectly matching the girl's mood. She sat down on the edge of the rock, dangling her feet into the frigid water. She sat for hours, one with the storm.

"Isabel?"

The girl looked up.

"You've come to say goodbye, haven't you?" she asked the other, who was now sitting on the edge beside her.

"Yes. How did you know?"

"All of us knew. We all knew long ago that you wouldn't be coming back." Hot tears started to blend with the rain on the girl's face.

"All of you?"

"Yes. Have you bid farewell to the rest yet?"

"No. You're the only one. I just thought, with all we've been through together-" He lapsed into an embarrassed silence, and the two stood on the rock silently, the only sounds the pounding rain and crashing waves.

 The girl reached out a hand, and the boy took it. They stood together, listening and watching the storm. The sky had become dark, and the boy slipped his hand away from the girl's. She turned towards him to say one final goodbye, but he had already gone, into the storm.

The girl dropped her outstretched hand to her side, and went back to standing once again in the same position as before the boy had come. Yet something was different. Her heart felt heavier than ever before, and the storm seemed to be pounding to the beat of one word.
