Waves crashed against the side if the ship.  Groaning it rocked back and forth as the ocean unleashed its mighty wrath upon the old merchant vessel.  Above the masts, long, jagged fingers of lightning split the roiling mass of clouds. Cresting a wave, the ship, The Dominance, spilled down the side into the trough just as another wave crashes over the bow flooding the deck. The mast, already weakened from the storm and years at sea, splintered and crashed the the deck.  Men race about in the tempest as they try to keep the ship afloat a few more moments.  But the storm has other ideas.  The ship badly damaged barely took the violent beating it took, but it could survive only a little longer.  Finally with one last effort, the ship sank beneath the waves of the cruel ocean.  No one escaped.  Except for one.

It wouldn't be easy, being alone at sea. They'd been lucky: Francis had thrown himself free of the mast just in time, and Artrus ((That's a random name - feel free to change it. Names aren't my strong point.)) had tied himself into a longboat. Francis had been thrown into the boat by the wind, half unconscious. But he was awake now, and hungry. He pecked at Artrus's ear, somewhat peeved. Artrus sat up suddenly and nearly fell out of the boat. He rubbed his head and looked around, then stiffened as he realized their situation. Alone. With a parrot. In the middle of the ocean. He touched both middle fingers to his forehead and bowed his head, remembering the crew of the Dominance, remembering his friends. His lips moved in a silent farewell, following with the traditional assurance to the dead: You will be remembered with honor. A wave rocked the boat just as Francis pecked again. Artrus glared at him. "You overgrown pigeon, show a little respect, will you?"

((Wow, that's short. Oh, well. :P))

While it as all fine and well to honour the dead and snap at parrots, Artrus quickly realized that he was in a life-and-death situation. He was thankful that the storm had gone, leaving him with fair sailing weather... but how do you "sail," per se, when your vessel is a meager pile of boards barely floating, and your crew consists of a solitary bird? More to the point, how you survive in the middle of the ocean without a bit of land in sight and absolutely zero provisions?

He was fathoming theses weighty questions, figuring out his odds, when a curly-haired head popped up from the ocean beside his boat, startling him so that he jumped and Francis flapped and squawked indignantly. "Hello," said a cheery female voice. "How d'you do?"

"Er..." said Artus. Then, thinking that nothing worse could come of talking to a random woman floating in the midddle of the Carribean, he replied "Well, not that great actually, as you can see."

"Well what's happened?" asked the woman indignantly, looking round at the wreckage of the boat floating on the rocking waves. "I've been ship wrecked! What d'you think's happened?" Artus said, exsasperated.

"You know," said the woman, "I was going to help you. Now I see your the kind of person who dosn't need any help at all."

With that, the curly blonde lady began to swim away in a smooth flowing motion. "Wait!" Artus yelled. "What do you mean?" He dived in and began swimming after her. He was a fair swimmer, but it still took him a while to catch the woman.

When he had finally caught her, he was put of breath, but she was looking cool as ever. "Wait," he said breathlessly. "What are you? And how can you help me?"

"It's so nice to be asked what I am instead of who I am," said the lady, tossing her hair.

Atrus had no intention of restating his query, so he merely stared at her with as much dignity is possible while treading water.

"For your information, though," she continued, obviously not the kind of person- ? - who was too good at the silent treatment, "my name is Mirellis, and I am a Merian. And I can definitely help you."

((Not too great or long, but I'm feeling a bit languid at present, sorry...))

((ha ha, I just HAD to add this))

She smiled slowly. Her teeth were like pearls. Hard to keep up on a ship, Artrus thought. He was about to reply when an enormous fishtail appeared above the water. Without a second thought he grabbed the woman by the arm and hauled her up onto the driftwood, crying, "Shark!" The strange woman laughed, and waved her seeweed-green scaly tail in Artrus' face. "Don't be silly, I don't even look like a shark." "A mermaid!" he gasped. The woman scowled. "Not Mermaid, Merian. I told you."

Artrus spat, "Merian, whatever". He did not like this thing, this freak of nature. Men have feet not tails! He refused to believe this! " Mermaid, mermaid!" screeched that idiot of a bird Francis. Artrus was fed up"It's Merian," He said simultainiusly as that fish lady, demon women thing! "Sorry and good bye" Artrus said, " Me and my parrot shall be on our leave" Francis her shoulder. "Fine then, just me" Said Artrus and of he went. Repulsive thing, that half woman was, and so unlike him. Artrus could not bare it.

"Wait," It, called " We are coming with you! you can't survive on this island alone. The other Merians shall lure you to you gravesand if they don't, the island's many magical forces will!

"There's more like you?" said Artrus given the Merian a once over. "Follow me to safety" she sai. It apeared she was Artrus' best bet. "Very well" Sighed Artrus. Under his breath he muttered "Dreadful, just dreadful"

" Dreadful, just dreadful," Yelled Francis, loud enough for the whole island to hear.

   " Shut up stupid bird."

(( I was thinking that maybe he would start hating the Merian because she is wierd and different but end up liking her in the end. Thought's?))

" What island?"

"This island," Merellis said as the fog cleared and an island became visable.

" So what horrors do we have to face at this place" Said Artrus. He just wanted to go home. "well, for starters there is the bridge of Delpora, Dragon city, cannabalistic fairies, volcanoes that spurt invisable poisonus gas, water monsters, ghosts of soldiers that fought wars, actual soldiers fighting in wars, the crazy king, his ghost brothe, and Merians trying to lure you to your death at every turn!" Said merellis whithout a smidgon of expression. They were getting closer to the island,Merellis swimming in the lead,Artrus rowing the boat, the stupid parrot flying over head. Water, air and land being so almost peacful. Hard to believe huh?

When Merellis got to shore she got out and her tail turned into a humen pair of legs.

"Oh, great, you can disguise as a human too? Now we might have to burn a few women when I get home. Who knows maybe they  are one of you..." Artur said and shivered.

" Oh you'll probobly not get home though I'll try hard to get you out of here and if worst comes to worst I'll feed you to the sea monsters. Even if you do get home, Don't waste your firewood. Merians only exist on this Island"

(( I was thinking that maybe he could be the type of person who starts witch  trials and stuff like that. Like?))

" Okay, first we get to shelter, it's going to rain" Said the merian. Artrus looked around. There was not a cloud in the sky. He felt a drop on his nose. "It rains when there is no clouds!!!" He exclaimed. " Yup, the sky rains whenever it wants, so usually it rains at the same time as it rains in movies, for dramitic effect. now it is raining because it does not like you." They ran and merellis disapeared. Artrus ran up to that spot too, and fell down through the hole that was there. " merellis greated him when he came down. " welcome to Wonderland, the home of my best friend Alice. In came a huge hairy thing whith extremely big feet. They had pink nailpolish on them. "Alice is what humans call a big foot, but their real name is Hare. Alice is a Hare.

" Hi there!" Said Alice
