Chatterbox: Inkwell

This is really

This is really rare. I'm going to write a (maybe) realistic fiction short story. If I'm able to.

Kate lay back against the grass, forming a pillow out of her armss. She closed her eyes and let her mind wander. She was just thinking about how she wanted to go work on the book she was writing and was about to stand when she heard someone calling her name.

"Kate! Hey Kate!" Her best friend Sammy came jogging over, "Want to go hang out with me and some friends at Starbucks with me?" Sammy asked, panting.

"Sure, just let me get my bag real quick."

"Okay, I'll meet you at the car." Sammy had just gotten a car for her 21st birthday and was still making a big deal about of it. And that was three months ago. However, Kate thought as she retreived her bag from a nearby park bench, it was a very nice car. That was still not an adequate reason to still be making such a fuss about it. Kate climbed into the used bright red convertible and promptly rolled down the window, despite the fact that the roof was already open. Sammy started the car and they were off, cruising down the back country roads rather than the main highway. As Sammy drove Kate fighed into her bag and pulled out her touchscreen laptop. Before she could even turn it on though, Sammy deftly reached over and gently slapped Kate's hand, never taking her eyes off the road.

"No." She said, "Talk to me."

"Fine." Kate responded, putting away her laptop. "Sooo.... What should we talk about?"

"I don't know. I'm busy driving. Unless you'd like to?"

"Oh, no. I'd really prefer not to."

"Come on Kate, you're such a wimp sometimes." Sammy says teasingly, prodding Kate in the side.

"I am n- Hey! Stop that! Fine I'll talk to you. Who else is coming?"

"Oh just some poeple. Sara, Johnny, Myra. Oh and Stephanie and Caleb." Kate graoned. "Those last two were self invites though, it's Myra's birthday on Monday but she's going out of town so we thought we'd celebrate early, and, well, you know how Stephanie is. Always needs to be the center of attention. I bet you twenty bucks she's gonna make this all about her."

"First of all, that sentence had way to many commas in it."

"Ugh. You think I care?" Sammy grimaced.

"Secondly, yes I do know how Stephanie is. And thirdly, I am not taking that bet."

"Why? `Cause you know you would lose?"

"Yes, precisely. I'm not one to bet my money on things I already know aren't going to turn out in my favor." Kate said, laughing a bit.

"Shame. I was gonna use that money to buy something to eat." Sammy said, looking dissapointed. This only caused Kate to laugh more. It felt good to laugh. She hadn't been laughing enough lately, what with the deadline for
finishing her book. She was almost done and just had to wrap up a few
more plot points, infact she had been planning on finishingit this
afternoon. After a few moments of Kate's laughter, Sammy began to laugh as well.

They spent the short remainder of the drive in a comfortable silence. When they arrived they went inside to see Sara and Will comforting a sobbing Myra. Sammy rushed over and quickly asked what was wrong.

"It's Stephanie." Johnny responded, pointing to where Stephanie and Caleb were sitting. Stephanie was frantically typing on her phone, snickering from time to time. Caleb was sitting across from her, sneaking apologetic glances at Myra

"She told me I l-looked ugly and th-that I don't have any f-friends." Myra said between sobs. Sammy gently wrapped her arms around Myra, while Kate stalked over to where Stephanie sat. She slammed her palms down on the table, startling Stephanie into noticing her.

"Excuse me?" Stephanie asked politely.

"Why did you do that?" Kate demanded. She was done with hiding from Stephanie, ignoring her. It was time she stood up, for herself and for her friends.

"Do what?"

"Say those things to Myra."

"Oh, I don't know... I just felt like it. It was just a joke." Stephanie said, shrugging.

"Well you ruined her day, even if it was just meant as a joke. You need to go apoligize. Now."

"And what if I don't?" Stephanie inquired innocently.

"Then you have to live with that descision. For the rest of your life, and I assure you that I will not let you doanything like that again. So either way, I win. But me winning won't help Myra feel any better. You apologizing might though."

"Oh. I guess I'll go do that then." With that Stephanie got up and walked over to where Kate's friends sat. Kate followed close behind her, just in case things got messy. When Stephanie reached them, Sammy stood up, blocking her way.

"No. You're not allowed over her."

"Sammy, it's okay. She's here to apologize." Kate said, laying a hand on Sammy's shoulder.

"Really?" Sammy asked, looking doubtful.

"Yes." Stephanie said, "I am. But I can do it from here, if you'll step aside." Sammy oblidged, giving them a clear veiw of the group sitting at the table. "Myra, I want you to know that I'm sorry. I'm sorry for what I said. You have loads of friends, friends that are willing to comfort and stand up for you."

"I a-accept your apology." Myra said, looking up with bloodshot eyes.

"Thank you." Stephanie said, sounding unsure of herself, "Thank you very much."
