WOOHOO!!!! I entered a poetry contest here in the Reno/Sparks area called Paws for Poetry and sponsored by the Shakespeare Animal Fund. The subject was animals, and seeing as how we have only one pet, my subject was really decided for me - my hamster, Lou. The night before Easter I stayed up late writing, and I sent in the poem. A couple of minutes ago they called. I won Grand Prize! It was all ages through 12th grade, I think, and they had a college English professor and a professional author and I don't know who else, and they said that there was no competition!!!!!! YEEEEHHAAAWWWW!!!!!Yippeeday!!!! Glorious morning!!!! Strange - I don't actually know what the prize is, but I'll find out at the event Saturday where they announce it. WOOHOO!!!! Oh, sweetness profound!
Ok, I'm done gloating. Sorry. I just wasn't expecting to win in my age group, let alone grand prize.... Oh, and for all you animal lovers, search for the Shakespeare Animal Fund - pretty cool, actually. I'm not going to post my whole poem just because I might enter it somewhere else too. I'm really done now. Had to tell someone, and my letters to my pen pals won't get there for a week or so. Thanks for spending your time on this.

Hmmm... I just realized that in my orginal post, it looks like the college professor and author entered the contest. They were actually the judges. Sorry - mistype in my ecstasy. :)

I won't post the whole thing, BellaTrix, because I'll probably enter it elsewhere. Here's my favorite part, though. It's about my dwarf hamster Lou, and a speedier, more adorable and downright beautiful fluffball you have never seen.
I got to know her slowly,
That miracle they call "bonding" where
She learned my smell, my touch.
Somehow, she never figured out
That I really could
Stop her from anything. She never got
That I was bigger.
She was perfect.
If she was a toddler, I'd call her
Hyper, a pain
In the neck. As a hamster,
It was different. And she mellowed,
So it wasn't six months before
She was sleeping on the back
Of my neck, tucked snuggly under my
Ponytail, dreaming small, snuffly
Dreams.
She was perfect.
Those two stanzas really can't convey the essense of the poem, though. :( If it gets posted on the Shakespeare Animal Fund website, I'll let you know. Thanks!

Congrats! Congrats!!!!!!!! I can't believe it! You must feel so happy ! We all do! Tell me what the prize is, and can I see your poem?

Oh, great. Turns out the event where I was going to get my prize was on Thursday, so I missed it. Rats! I don't know if they'll let me get my prize after all; we'll see. Then again, it's not a big deal because they'd probably give me something like a coupon for a pet sitter. Yeah, my hamster really needs a lot of supervision. Especially considering how she gets scared out of her fur every time I open her cage. :P I may love her, but she doesn't love me - just prefers me to other people. She's weird.

I'll say. Turns out, the prize was an iPod, and they're going to let me have it, but it stinks anyway. :( *sniffle*
