~A London Club~
Music blares. The Dj, Dj Roll ‘N’ Rock, is playing a popular song. Then, a new beat starts. The room explodes in cheering.
~A table in the same club~
A spunky girl with pink hair sits alone. The DJ leaves the stage, and a new performer stepps on.
~~~~~
“Hi,” A voice breaks her contemplative silence. Standing opposite her is a man with spiked black hair, a black jacket, and a pair of black jeans. “I am DJ Roll ‘N’ Rock. More commonly known as GAred. You are Starling, right? And you are a vocalist, just out of high school. You graduated early, and need a job. I am making a band, and you are my first pick.”
“UH, okay?” Starling looks bemused. “What’s the pay?”
“A lot. We will probably have some big hits. I am already a DJ, but I am looking to… expand. I Will explain later. You in?”
Starling looks into Gared’s eyes, and says: “Yes.”
Starling~
I flipped my pink hair behind my ear as Gared walked away. I tried to look cool, but inside, I was brimming with excitement. I was just asked to preform with Roll N Rock! Silently, I stood up from the table and walked backstage.
(August 9, 2016 - 10:37 am)
Gared was slamming down keys on a computer as Starling walked in. From a different door, and young woman with crazy green hair walked in.
“Yo, boss.” She said.
“Hello, whatever your name is. I need you two to think of some stuff to play. Work together, and I will make you a show stopper. Oh, and look at those hard drives over there. Every song I have made, and some new ones. Please keep them secret.”
GAred then closed a laptop, threw it in a bag with a pair of headphones.
“You two, get in the elevator. It will take us onstage. Your synthesizer, Eko, and a microphone are in the elevator. You, Starling, take the pink thingy. You, Eko, take the green box.” Gared announced.
~The Elevator~
“Ok, get ready to play. MAke it upbeet. I have control of the lights.” Gared was standing behind a platform. All around him were computers and dials. HE flipped some switches, and the elevator moved.
“Announcing Eko and Starling, the two best musicians in the house!!!” GAred yelled. The lights focused on the synthesizer. GAred slid some switches, and a beat started playing. A buzzing loop played. Then the song was off. Loud booms and pops played along with the whizzing synthesizers. GAred seemed to be able to play the best loops while controlling the lights expertly. The club went wild. Starling’s vocals, distorted and looped by GAred, fit perfectly. Then the lights focused at Starling. She began a solo: “Leave me here,” SHe sung. “In the grave you dug for me. In the grave you dug, for, meeeee!”
The beat switched back on, and the vocals played in the background as the lights switched on.
(I love it! So easy to envision-nice!)
Starling~
I sung my heart out.
Honestly?
That was the best I had ever sang.
Even after I went home, that solo still haunted me. It was so pretty, whoever wrote it was obviously thinking something sad, but that wasn't how it comes out.
On the elevator down, I talked a little with Eko.
"Good job," I said quietly.
She nodded. "Same to you." She had a much deeper voice than I expected, but I kept my face normal. The elevator dinged and I waved awkwardly as she stepped out. She ignored me, or had her hands too full.
I sighed as the doors closed. Looks like I was cast out here too. Oh well.
That wouldn't affect my singing.
Why isn't anyone joining Pop is Bland?!?!?!
~Portland, Pearl District, near Pioneer Square~
A young man walks confidently through the crowd. Behind him, another man walks. They stop at a cafe.
“So,” The young man says. “You want me to perform in Portland?”
“Yes” The older man replies.
“Well, I need my team.”
“That can be arranged.”
“They live in London.”
“Ah”
~Eko’s Apartment~
Eko opened the envelope. It was probably nothing, but the return address was to a certain “DJ Roll ‘n’ Rock”. She opened it. Inside was a check for one thousand pounds. One thousand! On another card was the following message:
“Hey, can you come to Portland? I will send you plane tickets.”
~Starling’s Townhouse~
“Uh, can you explain how we got a check for two thousand pounds, dear?” Starling’s mother’s voice drifted up to Starling, who was listening to the hard drive Gared had given her.
“Long story, mom.” Starling shouted.
“And why is it from DJ? Where have you been?”
“Ok, remember that- Ok, I will come downstairs.
LATER
“So, you know that club I went to, to see DJ Roll ‘n’ Rock?” Starling began. “Well, he invited me to play onstage with him, and do the vocals for the song. He said something about pay.”
Starling turned on Youtube. The front page was covered with the video “Girl age 16 performs with DJ Roll ‘n’ Rock.”
“Oh, another thing: you got a message and a plane ticket to go to Portland. That DJ Rock and Roll wants you to tour with him.” Starling’s mom broke into Starling’s meditation.
“Yessss!!! Ahhhhhh! I get to perform with Dj Roll ‘n’ Rock more!!” Starling yelled.
