Chatterbox: Inkwell
Writing Competition!
Writing Competition!
All credit goes to The Writer for creating this thread on January 9th, 2016. I found it on the 21st page of Inkwell and adapted it. So, the rules:
-Each contest will be be 2-6 weeks long, depending on the judge.
-There will be one judge for each round, so that the judge for round one (me) can participate in round 2, and the judge for round 2 can participate in round 3, and so on. The judge chooses the category, the minimum (but not max) number of words, the allowed time, and the deadline.
-This is copied exactly from The Writer's thread: Have fun as well! For those who aren't writing feel free to comment on stories and build others up! This is meant to give fellow writers a challenge and to improve their already wonderful skills!
-The themes can include everything from essays to fantasy stories to free-verse poetry. Any form of writing that the judge chooses!
-Make sure, if you are judging, that it's fair. Don't choose someone's story or essay or poem just because you like the writer.
-And one more thing- do your very best on the writing work! This is meant to be serious, actual writing, and I am thinking of doing something special for the winning writers once we've had at least four rounds.
@Admins, The Writer came up with this idea. Do you think that the winning writers from each round might be able to be featured in Cricket magazine as a prize? Either in Cricket League, the Letterbox if it's very, very, short, or even in the main magazine part? I know that it's not very likely, so I don't have my hopes up, but what do you think?
I will be the judge for the first round; when this shows up, I'll post the requirements for round 1.
I've passed your request on to the editors. We do sometimes publish excerpts from Chatterbox in the magazine.

Let's see... it's July 30, with one more day... okay. Guys, you have 23 days to do your stories now.
(July 30, 2016 - 12:43 pm)
Admins: Do you take bits of what we write here in the Chatterbox at random? What I mean is, could anything I write here get published?
(July 30, 2016 - 9:36 pm)
l would like to join!
A few questions, first.
What level of technology is acceptable? l want to do a steampunk-style story with Victorian Era technology. Not sure it that still fits in the medieval definition.
(July 31, 2016 - 10:34 am)
Hm... I think you can do that, Shadow.
(July 31, 2016 - 2:06 pm)
Top, top, straight to the top. We need to keep this alive while people write their stories! So top!

TOOOOP Now for my story. XD
FIRE, AIR AND WATER
BY INKTAIL
I watched as the city burst into flame in front of me. What had I done? I stared at my hands.
"All this...for The One? This cannot be right," I murmured.
"The One is very important," whispered the woman next to me. She was dressed in a gray gown and was floating. I had gotten used to that by now. I ignored her and ran into the forest. Daisy was waiting for me. Neither of us smiled. I handed her the paper and she ran to deliver it to Brooke. I sneered. Brooke, the one chosen to lead us, my foot. I sank onto a nearby log and reflected back on what had happened...
I had woken up that morning. Something felt different. My fingers tingled as I dressed for the day. I ran downstairs where Mom was making fried eggs. She grinned at me.
"Ready for your favorite breakfast?"
I nodded. "You bet I am!!" I smiled as Mom brought the plates full of eggs to the table.
"Eat up!" We cried together, and dug into the pile.
After breakfast, I texted my best friend, Mei, and left the house. Mom was already at work, so I left a note on the table. I ran to the coffee shop down the street. I noticed Mei inside, waving frantically, and entered. I breathed in deeply. Oh, how I love the smell of coffee in the morning! I walked to Mei's table and she grimaced.
"Daisy is gone."
"What?!" I gaped at her. Daisy was Mei's little sister.
"She received her True Name letter. The next morning, she was gone." Mei sighed and stirred her coffee. "I think she got a Hidden."
I gasped. To get a True Name at only 11 was rare. I was 16, and I didn't have my True Name!
"Which one?" I asked. My voice shook.
"Typhoon." I gasped. That was bad luck indeed.
"So she disappeared the next day, you say?" I said softly. Mei nodded, blinking back tears. My phone buzzed. I pulled it out. Mom. 'Come home, Winnie. Now.' I gaped and shook my head, annoyed.
"Mei, I'm so sorry. Something's wrong. I have to go. I'll call you!!" I cried, running out of the shop and down the street. I opened the door and entered the house. Mom was sitting at the front desk, holding a letter in her hand. Her face was pale. She handed me the letter and I studied it. Completely blank, with no return address. I knew what it was immediately.
My True Name.
I ripped the letter open and opened the page. "Inferno?!" I cried. No, no, no!! Mom gasped and tried to hug me, but I pulled away and ran to my room, slamming the door shut.
How could I have gotten a Hidden True Name? It just didn't make sense! I laid on my bed and thought. Finally, I knew what to do. As night fell, I texted Mei.
"I'm Hidden. Must hide in forest. I'll miss u. Love, Winnie."
Then I shut off my phone and grabbed other supplies to keep me alive. After Mom went to bed, I went to the cupboard and grabbed bread and fruit. I didn't leave a note this time. Mom would understand. I ran out the village and into the Woods Beyond.
I remembered that day like it was yesterday. Not too many days later, I got my power and discovered Brooke and Daisy in the forest. We were a trio. It was us against the world. Except....
I realized I was crying. I sniffled and wiped my nose as Daisy came back to the campsite. She nodded gravely and squatted by the fire pit. I sighed deeply.
"Thinking about the prophecy, Winnie?" She asked me. She sounded forlorn.
I nodded. "Two light names and one dark, will help to weave a song of lark." I repeated from memory. Daisy and I had long ago figured out that Daisy and I were the light. We assumed Brooke was the dark. We never talked about it with her around though. She could get a bit...testy. We had been looking for The One for three years. The One was the only one who would not succumb to the darkness. We still had not found them.
Suddenly, bushes trampled, and many of Brooke's guards popped out. "Come out. You are surrounded." Brooke's voice rang out through the forest.
I gritted my teeth. "I always knew she was dark," muttered Daisy. I didn't answer, just prepared my hands. The sun rose over its summit as Daisy and I fought the two hundred plus guards. As the sun sank, we finally made it to Brooke.
"Brooke, please stop. Together we can ignore the prophecy." I pleaded.
The floating figure laughed. "You really think I'll fall for that?! Never!" She raised her arms and summoned mini twisters. Made sense, since her Name was Zephyr.
As we dodged the mini tornados, Daisy suddenly gasped. "I'm....the One." She whispered, breathless. Her eyes shone.
"No, Daisy-" I cried. But it was too late.
"Brooke, stop! You know what The One must do! Well, I am ready. I am The One." Daisy yelled. The whirling winds stopped, and the figure in gray laughed cruelly.
"Come, then." A wind buffeted Daisy and I along into the temple.
There was a huge bowl sitting on the middle of the floor. Daisy walked up to it. She shook with nerves, and whispered something I didn't catch. At the last moment, she turned to me.
"Winnie..tell Mei I loved her," She whispered. Her eyes were big and round and full of tears, but she closed them and sat in the bowl. As soon as she touched the metal, Brooke began to writhe and scream. A second pair of lungs soon joined the first.
"I love you!!" It cried, before there was a blinding flash of light. I squeezed my eyes shut, then...silence.
I opened my eyes and rushed over to the bowl. The wind howled in the breezeway. The water in the bowl rippled. I cried, my tears setting themselves on fire as they rushed out. Through all the mayhem, a lark sang mournfully over the sea.
The sun rose. A lark flew over to a temple in the forest. There was a bowl of water on the floor. There was a lit flame. And the wind howled mercilessly.
But the flame never wavered. It stood, like a proud solider, over the bowl of water. And the lark could just make out faces in the flames. Three girls. All hugging and crying together. The lark smiled shyly. Then it flew away.
And the temple was never seen by anyone ever again.
