What gets you

What gets you hooked on books?

Hello all!  It's been quite awhile since I've been on here, sorry about that, life does get in the way.

Anyway, I'm here to ask you what gets you hooked on books?  I'm currently working on a book concept, but I would like to ask some real people what they like in books, what tickles their fancy.

A little bit about the book in general first just so I don't get things completely irrelevant to the book itself.  It will be a fantasy book, it won't be a love story, (although there may be a love interest later on, I haven't decided yet), and for the most part of the book the characters will be on a journey.

I completely forgot one thing:

Welcome back, Merenwe! I have not been on here for over a year. And the last time (summer last year) I made one post, but never even came back to read comments, sadly. So really, it has been over 2 years. But I welcome you back, and I love your ideas for your story. I personally love journeys in series.

Welcome Back Merenwe!

What gets me hooked on books is if one of the really strong characters dies, or at least someone dies. To me, it makes the book a little more interesting.

I also wouldn't mind if there was some romance mixed into the book.

P.s. Sir Galahad said komb! Comb what? My hair? Or yours?

Thank you, both Joan and Ashlee for the welcome backs!  :)

Ashlee, huge book fanatic here as well, so don't worry about it!  This is exactly the kind of discussion I wanted.   I will be sure to include some (if not all) of the elements you talk about.  Yes indeed, a good plot is key!  Without it, your characters may end up lost in a forest, talking about how lost they are.  I will be certain to make sure the beginning isn't boring!  Plot twists are certainly an important part.  I have to research more about how to write good plot twists, as I'm not sure if I would be able to just naturally come by good plot twists.  Great four points, I'll have to write them down in my planning so I can be sure to nail them on the head!

Joan, oh yes, there will probably be deaths in my book(s), not sure how it will all play out, but there should be some.  And I'm not sure if there will be any romance in at least the first of these books, my characters are starting out pretty young, unless they tell me otherwise part way through writing.  But I'm sure there will be some later on.

In answer to Elmodaisy's suggestion of posting parts of the story, I may or may not.  I'm not quite sure how I'm going to go about writing the book yet, and the way I go about writing it would impact the readability of the book in its very first draft.  I may post a teaser of the book sometime soon, though.  ;)

Are you good at/enjoy drawing? If not, I can draw a cover for you (probably) when you tell me what you want on it. Bluebird's probably more up to the task, but I'm not sure how good she is with digital art.

That's so sweet of you Scylla!  I do enjoy doing graphics, (I took a class for it last spring).  But if you would like to create a cover for the book, your more than welcome to!  I'll have to think about what I'd want the cover to look like.

*squints*

Have I not mentioned that I do not plan my plots ahead of time? That method failed the first time, but is working quite well for me now.

I would like to reiterate a question I asked earlier, I'm very curious to see your guys answers and opinions.

I noticed a few of you would like to see a strong female character (Bluebird, Curio, and Parker), which I also enjoy, but I was curious as to why you would like to see a strong (do you imply main by this as well?) female character, what's the appeal?  Would you be adverse to a strong female antagonist?

I like strong female charries because it shows that women/girls/females are not weak.

Also, because they are 95% of the time awesome.
