The ground slipped from beneath my feet. I sensed the air rushing around me. I smelled the salty sea. I beheld fragments of the fading blue sky. Then I felt the splash throughout my whole body. My legs hit the water first, and, quicker than I could even think, I was submerged completely. The water was cold and dark. It was like running through a snowstorm without a coat. I squeezed my eyes shut as I sank. My thoughts blinked on suddenly, and it wasn’t until this happened that I realized I hadn’t even been thinking; just moving. Swim to the surface! I thought. I kicked furiously, and I clawed at the water with my hands. They met with nothing but emptiness. My eyes opened as I surfaced, and so did my mouth. I frantically gasped for air. As soon as I caught my breath, I laughed. I was beyond freezing, yes, soaked all over, yes, but an unexplainable thrill was bubbling in the stew pot of my feelings.

I took another deep breath and laughed, almost choking on water. I looked up at the gray sky and smiled sadly. Would I ever see the sun again? Every time the clouds came they seemed to last longer then before, like someday they would never disappear. I stopped kicking for a moment and closed my eyes. Something was different. The way I was swimming had changed. It seemed natural, but different. I opened my eyes and looked down, squeaking in surprise. "My legs!" I exclaimed, pausing swimming entirely and sinking down. I closed my eyes, expecting to be stung by the sea water, only to catch a glimpse of everything crystal clear. I slowly opened one eye, then the other and gasped.

My legs had turned into a magnificent tail, colors cascading down to the fin. I soon realized I didn't need to hold my breath anymore, for, accompanying my suprised gasp, was water. Somehow I didn't choke.
