I glide down the hallway, feeling all happy and
floaty inside, like I swollowed a cloud. Everything's going well in
America, although I have no friends. Sure, I'm the big bullying target
not speakng English, but I can't understand what they're saying about
me, so it's win-win. I don't even notice people screaming as a giant rat
comes scurring down the hallway. I still don't notice as it goes
squeaking right under me, right through me. I catch more staring than usal and spin around to see it rush down the hall further. What???? Why didn't I notice a giant rat? Suddenly, I bump into a girl wearing a denim dress.
"Oh! Sor- soreee?" I say, feeling very self concious.
"Hello! What's your name?" the girl asks. One thing I understand.
"Ying-Mei."
"Hi, Ying-Mei. I'm Mae." The schoolbell rings. It's time to go to English, the hardest, most useful class of all.
