NaNoWriMo Help?

NaNoWriMo Help?

So, I recently made an account on the NaNoWriMo website, but I just don't really understand where you write your book. Like, I'm on Wattpad, and I was thinking it was similar to that....

Anyone know what I'm supposed to do?

Cool! NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month, which is in November. You write a 50k word novel, unless you're on the Young Writer Program, then it's just 30k.

For NanNo this year, I wrote out my novel on Microsoft Word, which is pretty much the only writing program I have on my computer. After you've written out your book, toward the end of the month, you will be able to validate your word count. If it reaches or surpasses the word count goal, they'll count you as a winner!

Now, since NaNoWriMo just happened, you won't be able to do that. But Camp NaNoWriMo is coming up. I think it's in... April and July? Someone correct me if I'm mistaken. But anyway, if you just search Camp NaNo, you'll be able to find it. Camp is how I started last year, then I did the official NaNoWriMo. It's a great way to get your feet wet, plus you can decide your own word count.

If you want, you can friend me on NaNo and Camp NaNo. I'm Anne Shirley101.

Hope this helps!

Thanks! I'm Quizzical.Zizzle there. What do you do at the 'camp'?

Camp is a great time to start or plan a novel! You can adjust your word count, and there's no prize at the end like there is for November. But you get assigned to a "cabin" of about six or seven people; you can talk to other writers! You can also request people you want to be in a cabin with. A lot of CBers do it. It's really fun! I don't think I'm going to actually write a novel for it, but use the time instead to draft one.

BHR pretty much explained the whole thing, but also - Wattpad is a site I don't suggest writing your novel on. It's an awesome writing website, but you don't want people stealing your idea if it's online. I recommend just typing it up on Word instead of online where everyone can see.

Good luck!

Yeah, thanks. When I write on Wattpad I make sure to do a copywrite thingy at the beginning (very officailly, mind you), so that no one can steal it. That's fine, don't you think?

If you're worried about copyright infringement, take the manuscript of the novel and any other important information (character outlines, plot diagrams etc.) and mail it to yourself with the date and DON'T OPEN IT UNLESS REQUIRED IN A LEGAL SITUATION.  That way you can prove you thought of it at such and such a date.

It sounds like the main source of confusion is where to write your novel.  NaNoWriMo and other events by the Office of Letters and Light happen at a certain time, and the website is more for social interactions and wordcount validation than posting your novel.  Camp NaNoWriMo is coming up in April, which is going to be SUPER AWESOME!!!!!

Happy Writing!

You can write your book anywhere you want, as long as you have a way to keep track of your word count. You can even do it by hand, and use a random word generator like Lorem Ipsum to validate.

I reccomend the Young Writer's website, since I don't know if any of my above advice works for the adult site, and you can choose your own word count instead of having to do 50,000 words.

NaNoWriMo is in November, but there are a bunch of offshoots from it like CampNaNo and WriYe for differents times of the year.

I like to write my NaNos on Google Drive. You'll need a Gmail email address, if you don't already have one, but's worth it. That way, you'll be able to access your story from any computer as long as you have Internet. DO NOT write your story in the word count box on the NaNo website - it WILL be deleted for security reasons. Google Drive is supposedly completely private. It's basically just an online word processor. You can also easily use it to collaborate on stories with others, so that's a plus.

Otherwise, just use a regular word processor, like Microsoft Word, Microsoft Works Word Processor, or OpenOffice (which is free).
