Simple. Read the chosen book (see comments for books besides first). Discuss the chosen book. Discussing goes on the first whole week each month, starting on Sunday and ending on Saturday. The first book is The BFG. The first discussion period will be July 1st-7th, but I can't be there for the first few days. Happy reading!

I'm game! But, since I've already read the first book, should I just relate to the many previous readings? How much time do we have to read the book? For example, if you picked the Book thief, We should get more than two weeks. Who picks the books? I think that you or someone should present a list of three books and then we have an allotted voting period.

I'd like to join, but which book are we thinking of reading? :)

I suppose we're reading The BFG. But, commenting has started, so:
I think that the BFG is not one of Roald Dahl's better works. It is not as random as his others. My favorite parts are: The Snozzcumber, Frobscottle and Whizzpoppers, the names of all the giants, when Sophie reads the labels of all the dreams, mixing the nightmare and the BFG's attrocious grammar. One thing I do not understand after multiple readings of the book: Why not just drink Frobscottle, and not bother with Snozzcumbers? Is the inclusion of the snozzcumber supposed to inspire kids to eat their spinach?

I thought the book was wonderful. The BFG couldn't survive on liquid alone, therefore the Snozzcumbers. And if the Snozzcumbers were good, then the giants wouldn't eat the kids.

Sounds good...
I read the BFG and other Roald Dahl books a lot when I was younger. I don't think that it was one of his best works, but it did have a nice playful and imaginative element to it. I think that there may, in some points of the book, have been an underlying message of "don't judge a book (or a giant) by its cover".

A.S.: shouldn't we be given the next reading assignment? Or something we can vote on?

Awesome! I love Roald Dahl books! Personally, I liked the dream-catching part the best. "'I like that dream, said Sophie.' Of course you like it! It's a Whizbanger! A Phizwizzard!"...
Don't let this thread die! Thanks, Violet

Want to vote on these?
White Fang/ Call of the Wild
The Invention of Hugo Cabret
The Hobbit
If you've already read these, feel free to comment on how awesome/mediocre/horrible they were. (I've read Hugo Cabret and Hobbit and enjoyed both immensely.)

Loved White Fang, The Invention of Hugo Cabret and the Hobbit. I've read abridged versions of Call of the Wild, but I'm curious about Jack London's further work, so I vote for Call of the Wild.

I vote for Call of the Wild, even though I won't be here next week.
