This is a thread dedicated to the word EPIC. What do you think of when you think of the word "epic"?

I actually strongly dislike this word, just because it is so overused. Also the kid I babysat used it EVERY. OTHER. WORD...

"Dude this part of this EPIC movie is so EPIC. It's so EPIC. I can't believe how EPIC it is. LOOK. IT'S EPIIIIIIIIC. EPIIIIIIIIIIIIC."

Multiply that by 1000 and you'll have a typical day where I babysat him. It was... epic. Believe me. ;)

It's okay, but people overuse it A LOT. Epic, epic phail, epic pwn, epicness, etc. Strangely enough, no one ever uses it to mean a book. I wonder why. (Sarcasm)

P.S. Spammy says "hpkv" Harry Potter killed Voldemort!

@ Julia: That's funny. I hope the kid widens his vocabulary or you might go crazy! ;)

The Epic of Gilgamesh.

Epic poetry, like The Illiad and The Odyssey and The Aeneid and Beowulf.

Epic fantasy, like The Lord of the Rings

Also, Watership Down (YES WD IS AN EPIC IT'S AN EPIC ABOUT HEROIC BUNNIES SHUT UP).

Epic ≠ totally awesome. Epic = heroic or grand in scale or character.

@Julia: I agree; the word "epic" being used to mean "totally awesome" is very overused.

The Epic of Gilgamesh is pretty awesome, excuse me, I mean EPIC.

I feel sadness that our society will insert a certain word into its vocabulary and then will not stop using it... until the next word comes around.

Epic is completely overused in the slang sense of the word (i.e. That was totally epic, man!).  It is a wonderful word when used in its proper sense.  Just the sound of the word makes me feel the magnitude of the work its used to describe (epic poem, etc.).  I'm disappointed that I can't love that word anymore like I used to, because now its just so misused.

I also hate everything that is the equivalent of "epic" in our society.  Incorrectly used "like" just kills me, and what kills me even more than that is the fact that I say like.  Incorrectly.  More often than I would like to.  Why?!  Why must this be?  I'm trying, though.  Unfortunately, I do use the word epic sometimes incorrectly (yes, I'm a hypocrite, but I don't mean to be) but I'm working very hard on saying it less.

I don't really have anything against the word epic, but it IS overused. But the words I REALLY hate is like as in 'that was like totally epic!!!' (haha). And dude, especially when someone calls me a dude. Because I don't know what I am, but I'm NOT  a dude. The word 'dude' puts me in mind of people who drink beer while watching football. I'm not sure why.

Heh, I call everyone a dude. I pretty much see it as gender-neutral, and it doesn't bother me when people call me that. But TO EACH THEIR OWN, and now I know not to call you that.

I've never liked or used that word at all. I don't really have many connotations for it, thougjh, so I don't particularly mind being called one; I just would never use it myself. I don't like the 'ood' sound in general. I make an exception for frood, but only because it's HG2G. Otherwise, I'm sure I'd hate that, too. Food is okay, but I don't like it... Same with mood. Rude is fine because it fits its meaning. Sued doesn't. Voodoo is... eh, it's actually okay, I guess, because of the repeated sounds. I don't like wooed. As other words with that sound, they're all associated with concepts I don't llike to think about, so I don't think I can judge them impartially. Not that it's ever impartial, but I mean withtout being influenced by the connotations. Also I've gone my whole life withot feeling the need to say them and I'm so reluctant to do so now that I won't even type them.

Oh, wait, skewed! I forgot that one! I like skewed, actually! And crude fits its meaning well...

I have no problem with the word epic poetry-wise! I just wrote an epic (OK, it wasn't THAT long) about the cruel tragedy of my mom not signing me up for a youth retreat. :(

However, I have a problem when it gets used like this:

ME: *interviewing my cousin* So, ______, what do you think of the site Roblox? (don't ask)

_____: It's epic and it's awesome.

ME: Erm....why is it so epic?

______: It's, like, awesome, and it's your own virtual world, and it's epic.

(He's a gamer. Don't ask.)

Or, take last night at the summer movie party my friend had:

MOVIE TRAILER: The most EPIC movie of the year!

MOVIE TRAILER 2: *doing those one word titles* AMAZING. *image* DRAMATIC. *image* EPIC.

PERSON IN AUDIENCE: Ooh, this is epic.

Or, take that annoying new show on Nickelodeon I keep hearing about. Somebody's epic adventures, I don't really care.

@ Writing Warrior

It's Bucket and Skinner in that title.  And it looks dumb.

I would say I don't like the way epic is overused, but I use it all the time.  Same with 'like, 'dude'.  I don't really say y'all or ain't, and I don't swear, but other than that, I tend to overuse slang.

This is totally random, but Perry the Platypus rock.

I'm in the same situation. I don't misuse those words too often, though, fortunately.
