Spelling Bees!!!

Chatterbox: Down to Earth

Spelling Bees!!!

Spelling Bees!!!

Anyone on here participate??? I won my school spelling bee again, but it was harder than it has been in the last two years. Right now I'm studying for our County Bee. I'm not expecting to win, though. Pfeffernuss? Tchotchke? Waterzooi? Cappelletti? Rejoneador? Crazy! I'm just really happy I get to go, considering I was up against a girl who competed at the Midwest Bee.

So anyone on here competing? I think Ima is..........

I also hear the words being read/spoken when I see them (typing, writing, reading, etc.). Doesn't everybody? I guess I've never asked everyone else how they interpret writing in their head!

Neither have I. I used to think everyone's thinking process was the same, but then I learned that it wasn't. I don't think everyone hears things being spoken, because my mom was surprised when I told her I did... Do different people have different voices when you read? All of you CBers have your own voices in my mind, though some are unrealistically similar to certain others. In stories that are in 1st person, I generally hear the character's voice (except when other people in the story speak, when I of course hear them), and I have several specific 3rd person voices for different types off writing (for example, I have a specific voice for school assignment and official documents and just about anything in particularly formal language, and about 3 voices for Muse articles). I've heard that some people just hear their own voice, though. And what about thought? My thinking process is mainly visual, like my memory; I just see the things I'm thinking about. For example, if I think that I want to read a certain book, I'd see the book in my mind and just feel longing for it. My mom can't describe her thinking process at all. I just find all this really fascinating for some reason...

No, I only brought it up because Brynne mentioned it. I know some areas do, though; do you?

We use a written test at Midwest, and that's how I'm practicing now. I practiced Spanish words last night.

How does that work? Does it have the sounds that make up the words in dictionary format written, and you have to write down the spelling, or does someone say the word and then you write it down? And do you find out how you did as soon as everyone writes the word down, or not until you've finished the written test?

Someone says the word, and we get words in intervals of 10. (I think) Then we turn the papers in and they are checked. This keeps going until there are 6-10 people left. Then they go to oral spelling. Is your spelling bee all oral?

Yes, mine's all oral. They start out using words from the list we used for the district bee and then move on to random dictionary words.

Wow... that seems a lot harder than mine! Do they tell you what dictionary they use so you have somewhat of a guide to study by???? Our words comes directly out of Spell It!

Yes, they use Webster's Third International Dictionary or something similarly named. I don't own it, unfortunately, but it's large anyway.

@ Annalesia: Congratulations! That's great! Do you get to go on to the next level now?

I also just won my school spelling bee!  We only had a school one, though.  My winning word was "infer".  The other person got "gamut", though.   We used a lot of challenge words.  "Infer" was a challenge word.  I think it was because most people can't tell the difference between "infer" and "imply".

@ANALESIA@

Or they might think it's inferr! Congratulations!

@Admin

Thanks.  Yeah, I think your theory is better (about infer).

Ima & Mockingjay, congratulations! :D It is so fantastic that you both won! :) *hugs* I think it would be quite cool to enter a Spelling Bee and I don't think I'm awful at spelling, but I'm totally not amazing either. ;) I'm better at writing spelling words for a test rather than spelling words out loud, because I like being able to see the word to see if it looks right. :) Congratulations again!

@Annalesia-Congratulations!!!!

@Kimberly B-Thanks! *hugs back*

@Ima-I think I've seen that dictionary. I believe it's the one in the back of Spell It!

Re: thinking in voices: All the Chatterboxers have slightly different voices when I read them, which is why I like to know who posted a comment before I read it. I automatically flick down to the name before reading, and scroll down on a really long post to see.

I think in my own voice, and read narration in books in my own voice, but the characters are a little different. I do have sort of "standard" voices for characters like the mother, the uncle, the friend's brother, etc. The exception is my history book, which I read in the author's voice, and a few books I've read a lot. (Narnia narration is always read in the voice of CS Lewis in my head.)

I have no control over which voices are used for which books or characters; whatever voice it is, it is. Do you choose voices or do they just happen with the character?
