Skiing

Skiing

The beauty. You go up the lifts and the hum of voices dies down. You see the mountains surrounding you, covered in snow. Up on the top you push off and fly like a bird through clouds oblivious to everyone. You race by, the scenery blurred but at the same time you can feel nature around you.

It amazes me to ski. It's beautiful. Whoever invented it: THANK YOU!

So, I went Skiing today and I'm wondering: Do you like skiing, Skiing experiences, How do you feel when you're skiing... You may have guessed it already. This thread is 100% about skiing.

I'm a big fan of cross-country skiing, Elizabeth. Trails through the woods are so beautiful, as are open meadows. I can enjoy nature at my own speed. I wonder which animals made which tracks. One early morning about 8 deer ran across the trail right in front of me and took my breath away! I'd been looking straight ahead as they approached from my left. And whenever there's enough snow, I ski at any park or even out my own back door. I don't have to travel to someplace that has a ski lift. Downhill skiing is awesome, too, though.

I ski (of course, it's practically a requirement for living in Wyoming...), our town's little hill is pretty boring, with the fun side of the mountain being blocked off for half of the year, usually. That being said, it at least isn't a solid wall of ice like they have up in the Tetons. :)

My first time skiing ever was when I was six. I ended up with a spiral fracture. It was great fun. ((NEVER NEVER EVER get a spiral fracture, mmmkay?)) And it led to me walking... oddly... and now I have piriformis syndrome and shin splints in that leg! Hooray! /sarcasm

That being said, I love skiing now.

@Admin  That sounds really cool! My parents said I should try cross country sometime.

@TNO What is Piriformis Syndrom and Spiral Fracture? That sounds bad.

A spiral fracture is when the bone breaks completely due to twisting. Imagine taking a stick, and then twisting one end left and the other end right until it snaps. Not fun, especially when you're six.

Piriformis syndrome is the inflammation of the piriformis muscle (a small muscle in the pelvis), causing pressure on the sciatic nerve (which runs from midway down the back to the knee), causing chronic pain throughout the length of the nerve, but most notably (for me, at any rate) throughout the hip and thigh. It is way worse than it sounds, it hurts to stand, sit, and lie down, so basically the moral of the story is... er... don't do anything to irritate the piriformis muscle I guess. (in my case, due to the spiral fracture and general failure of physical therapy, I walk with one foot out at an almost ninety degree angle from the direction it ought to be pointing [i.e., straight ahead], which puts undue stress on all the muscles on that side, and caused both my shin splints (rrrrrrgh) and the aforementioned PS and puts me at risk for fun things like flat feet and plantar faciitis.)

@TNO: Yikes. I'm really sorry, that all sounds horribly painful.

@Admin: I also cross-country ski!  Though I don't live where there's snow, I always go to some place with snow each winter to ski (though this winter I didn't).  I agree that there is so much beauty to enjoy and you can really, truly enjoy it when cross-country skiing.  There are downhill sections (my favorite part) and uphill sections (urgh, I hate those) and then the flat sections, which my dad loves, since he can't stand going downhill.  The flat sections, though, is most of the skiing.  It's sort of like hiking in that respect, where you're just going forward enjoying the scenery, etc.

But... I have never downhill skied.  I am in the process of trying to convince my parents to let me - it's somewhat working, but it will probably be awhile before they're totally convinced.  Maybe you guys could supply me with arguments? :)  That I'd appreciate.  They just don't want me to get hurt.  I mean, I understand that it is dangerous, but really, it's not that bad.  I know so many people who ski and they've never gotten hurt (at least, not in a major way).  It just sounds like so much fun!

When I first downhill skiied, it was at a city park on a small hill. You should start on a small hill, which won't be very different from cross-country skiing. And you should go when the snow and temperature are ideal, NOT when it's at all icy. Stay safe by staying in control at all times. Don't go too fast. And it's always a good idea to wear a helmet. If a hill gets too steep, you can go side to side (traverse) instead of heading striaght down. The scariest part of downhill skiing for me was using the tow/lift, getting on and off with skis on while it's moving. Since you already can handle cross-country skis, you should be able to handle getting on and off the lift/tow, too.

I love watching Cross-Country Skiing on the Olympics! Our FFA group went skiing today, but I didn't go because I have a science test to study for. Neat Thread!

~May the Odds be Ever in Your Favor~

Oh, I love watching cross-country skiing during the Olympics, too! The course is so beautiful with all the coloful ski suits against the white snow, and the competition strategy is so exciting!

Skiing sounds great, but I've never been in a place with enough snow for it! I'll be sure to do so in the future, though!

It's really easy to learn and I find it takes your breath away. Flying down a hill is like taking a cold shower! I hadn't gone skiing since I was 6 or something...

I've put cross country on my list of things to do!

I live to ski; awesomest sport ever. I only get to ski once a year when we go on our annual ski vacation in the Rockies, and it is the BEST! My uncle took me down a double black diamond last year where the pro's ski.....I would like to say I went down without wiping out, but nope, I crashed twice. I got my own pair of skis a few weeks ago!! They're black and silver with a little flower on them. Can't wait till next month to use them!

@Mary Jo: Your skiis sound pretty. :-)

I'm going skiing for the first time during March break! It looks fun and you guys make it sound fun too! I'm so excited! Does anyone have any advice?

Get used to moving around on the skiis where it's flat before you head down a hill. Take a beginning ski lesson, if possible, and learn how to fall and how to get up again. Stay away from ice. Have fun!

So, when you're going down a hill or whatever you shouldn't fly straight down(unless you want to go extremely fast). You should kind of curve back and forth to slow down your pace. When I first got to the ski place I practiced on one ski. I don't know if this helps but... Oh one more thing: DO NOT FALL OFF THE LIFT.

I've only been skiing once, but I absoutly love it. :) It is such an amazing, fun sport! We just might be going to UT soon and if we do we would totally ski so I'm very excited about that. :) Elizabeth, The way you described skiing was very beautiful, it made me feel like I was there!

@Admin: That must have been so cool! I'd love to cross-country ski someday. :)

While I was skiing, I thought about my post about this on chatterbox. Seriously. I tried to make it as authentic as possible. :)
