Optimism vs. Pessimism!

Chatterbox: Down to Earth

Optimism vs. Pessimism!

Optimism vs. Pessimism!

For those of you who don't know what those words mean, a deffinition from the American Heritage Dictionary:

Optimism:

1. A tendency or disposition to expect the best possible outcome or to dwell upon the most hopeful aspects of a situation.

2. Skip that one...

Pessimism:

1. A tendacy to take the gloomiest possible view of the situation.

2. Skip that one...

3. The doctrine or belief that the evil in the world outweighs the good.

So, now that you know what it means...

This is a debate on which is better.  You guys rant about for a week then I'll count up who said O and who said P.  Then we'll find out which (at least, on CB) which is more popular.

I stand on Optimism.  I'll tell you why when this thing kicks off.

This really doesn't seem like something to be debated, as it's more a matter of personality than anything else. Some people are natural pessimists, others have a more optimistic outlook. That being said, I consider myself rather pessimistic. Like TNÖ said, you're either right or pleasantly surprised.

No offence, ZNZ, but it looks like you are on the PESSIMIST side!(clap clap clap) Nothing bad about that, pessemist peopl often tend to turn optimistic, by setting there expectations to low, witch turn into high results. Optomistic people, on the other hand, also tend to do well, since they never give up. From reading this, the deduction I am optimast! (clap clap clap).

...Why would that offend me when I just admitted to it? Also, trust me, you don't need to reassure me that there's nothing wrong with it, although I don't want to become an optimist. If you'd read my post more carefully, you would have seen that I think pessimism is a good thing. (Though I don't have any problem with optimists - my dad's one.) Anyway, it can work the other way (that is, optimists can become extremely pessimistic.)

@ZNZ: I know, but I like seeing everybody else's opinion's and why.  I know that it's more personlaity than anyting else, but, still...  thought it would be fun.  ~shrugs~

I have no real reason why I think this but I'm an optimist... I mean I'm pretty sure. Undecided

Well, I'm optimist, but I'm not going to argue with those that are pessimist, because it doesn't really matter to me one way or another.  :)  But I like to see the bright side of things.  But I can be pessimist, but everyone can be.  I guess I'm kinda a mix.

I am a pessimist.  I tend to think things are going to go wrong, because they usually do (or...  I think they go wrong), and that might be because I am also a perfectionist.  I see flaws, and try to fix them, which I do, then I see another.  So somehow pessimism can help you see flaws in things - and fix them.  And if I were optimistic, then I would go head first into problems and do them, not checking if I am correct or not, thinking that all will be well and I will be fine, when sometimes I'm not.  Then, when it doesn't work out as I planned, I would probably fix them loosely and it would take a long time for me to perfect flaws because I think everything is absolutely wonderful, when pessimism would get things done faster.

And those examples are for my personality, and not on everyone in the world.  I wouldn't be good as an optimist, yet some may be completely opposite to that.  So those examples are for my personality, and your personality may or may not fit into those examples I wrote.  :)  You may work better as an optimist, and pessimism would work horribly for you while trying to fix a problem.

IN my opinion, optimism and pessimism are equally good.  :)

And that may have been a little confusing.  I'm sure when I read over this I shall ask myself, "Wha?"  xD

Ithink I could go either way on this. I forget what that's called.  Sometimes I'll be all cheery (like right now) and sometimes I'll get all mad at myself and then I doubt everything and then become pessimistic.  It tends to cycle.

I'm a realist. Here's the American Heritage Dictionary's definition of that:

1. Inclination toward literal truth and pragmatism

2. Not incredibly important to this discussion...

3. Same as 2.

Draw your own conclusions.

Right, I will add Realist to the list.

GAH!!! I wrote a really, really long post and was halfway through with it when my computer stopped working and everything was deleted! I might post something later, but I really don't feel like it right now...

Okay, so, it's Saturday and I'm an Optimist because nothing ever goes wrong when you are an optimist.  So  I've counted up and we've got two votes for Pessimist, five votes for Optimist, and two votes for Realist.  Please object if I'm wrong.  Anyway, we can keep at this if you want, I'll keep counting.

There was only one vote for Realist that I saw. Also, things do go wrong when you're an optimist. Optimistic people suffer just as much as the rest of us.
