QUIZ FOR HOMESCHOOLERS!!!!!

I was reading (as I always
do) some of the comments on one of my threads. I came across one that
said most of the kids (or teens) on the CB are homeschooled!! Is this
true?

Look at the time I submitted this.

| Don't worry, I'm not sick--but homeschooled. I have a little break right now! =]

Just someone who doesn't follow a set curriculum.  We study whatever we want when we want.  Even if it's nothing.

Some kids may think, ohh cool!  No more work!  No more studying ever again!  But after a while, you want to do stuff sometimes.  Not all the time, that's no fun.  But you do what you want when you want, and I find I learn more, and I learn better, because I do it at my own pace at a time when I'm passionate about it.  Does that make sense?

My mom keeps telling me how little she remembers from school.  And I think it's because the whole point is to get at much info into you as fast as possible, and people don't have time to absorb it all... anyway, that's my opinion.  I could be totally wrong.  :)

See, what'd I tell you?  I knew I'd find more... but instead of writing them, I'm copying.

"What you like about homeschooling- Everything! Sleeping till ten, being friends with people of all ages (no age discrimination, since you are not separated by age); interacting with people who follow different religions, speak different languages, have different ways of thinking and learning from each of them; eating and dressing the way you want without anybody laughing at you; all of the opportunities of using the time you could have been in school, a new way of thinking, and the fact that everyone who homeschools is a wee bit crazy. :)"

SO RIGHT!!!!  I AGREE WITH ALL OF IT!!!!  TOTALLY TRUE!!!!  I didn't know you were unschooled too.  :D :D :D :D :D :D

At the moment, I'm learning from "Life of Fred: Trigonometry" (math). Personally, I am of the opinion that the Life of Fred books are the most amazing math books out there -- it's math, but made interesting by being intertwined with the story of a six-year-old college professor.

Technically, I'm a sophomore in high school (10th grade), but I have no idea of my curriculum and testing grade. I'm studying for my ACT tests so I can take them this summer, because if I do, I could win a scholarship.

I make my own Englishh curriculum. I usually use "Writer's Inc" and similar materials for reviewing, but I combine my history and my English into one.

Neither my mom nor my dad school me -- I school myself. I go to my mom with questions, but most things I manage to work out myself. The library is heaven, and is pretty much my main source for everything.

I was public-schooled in first grade, and I was charter-schooled for both eighth and ninth grades (each at different charter schools).

My most favorite thing about homeschooling is the flexibility. I'm not pinned down by school -- it lifts me up instead. My family can go on vacation whenever we have the money because we aren't restricted by the school year. If I want, I can go ahead or linger behind on a certain subject. I can take a break from schoolwork and do something else if something's frustrating me, and I can come back with a clean mind. Best of all, I'm free to play the piano four hours a day. :)

Heya!

I'm homeschooled... not technically though.  I couldn't answer most of those Qs because I'm unschooled for the most part.  Which leaves me to flourish in the things I love the most (writing, singing, painting, etc).

Post what math you use- -----

What grade you're in currently- well, I should be in 11th, but I'm not really, because we don't do grades.  If I'd stayed in public I'd be in 11.  Otherwise, it really just depends on the subject.  I'd probably be first or second grade math.  It's pathetic really.  English though, I'm pretty advanced, but I don't know how much.

What you use for English-  -----

What time do you finish school-  -----

Who homeschools you, mom or dad-  Mom (Dad teaches art at the local JC, and then builds sculptures and stuff for the Schulz Museum)

Have you ever been public or private  schooled-  Yes, I was in public school until about two weeks into fourth grade, at which point I panicked and was promptly pulled out.

What you like about homeschooling-  A lot.  Well, you know, it's hard to describe, since most of the time I don't do anything... so really the things I like would probably be about unschooling: free time to do the things that are the most important to me, less stress about following the status quo, no peer pressure (though that's basically the same thing), more time with my family, and the look of utter astonishment when I tell people I'm unschooled (which I rarely do, because people give my mom a lot of flack about it.  Bleh. Meanies.)

All right, I'm done.

More things:

Like Kenzie said, late night movies and getting up later.

I get to grow up at my own pace.  I just turned seventeen on the thirteenth, but I still am allowed to act a young as I want, because I don't have to worry about all the other kids around me thinking I'm utterly stupid. (well, most of the time)

I probably wouldn't have been able to do NaNoWriMo if I'd been in public school still...

I wouldn't be where I am in singing, because I probably wouldn't ever have started taking lessons.

I doubt I would know you all or my cousins as well as I do because I'd be busy with other stuff and other people.

No bullying.

Oh yeah, another thing I love to do, taking photos!!  Love love love!!!

Mmm....  I wouldn't be able to write twelve page letters to my cousin in Indiana.

Etc etc.  I'm sure there will be more I want to write in just a second, but this is feeling long and a bit boring.

Toodles!

Laura - Do you or your parents know doing (and not doing) the stuff you do is against the LAW??? [Note from Admin: Vida, I believe you live in a different state from Laura, and rules about schooling may be very different from state to state.]

I googled it, and it said that anyone not doing MATH, ENGLISH, ETC. is not considered schooled. Does your mother (father whatever) keep records on PAPER of what you do?? If they do not consider what I am about to say. Pretty please? Embarassed

- What if the IRS comes in and demands proof you are getting an education?

- If you mother (father whatever) has NO proof, they will either put you in PUBLIC SCHOOL or send your administrator to JAIL, or make you pay A HEAVY PRICE!! Not to mention you will probably go to public school.

- Plus, what happens if your mother (father whatever) gets sick, like my mother did, and you have to be put into public school unwillingly?? What about MATH? ENGLISH???

This stabbed me in the back HARD!! I was in 3rd grade when my mother got sick. I had not been doing MATH, OR ENGLISH, OR a lot of stuff I was supposed to do. I was put into public school. Since I had been lacking lots of things I needed for PROPER school. I was put into 2ND GRADE!!!!!!!!!!!!! Then my dad decided to keep me in public school. SO I MOVED ON TO 3RD GRADE!!!!!!!! Even though I loved public school, it was really hard for me to be with a bunch of 8 year olds that wouldn't turn 9 until the next semester. Everyone was not as mature as I was and it was just a hard struggle. I RECOMMEND YOU PRINT THIS POST AND SHOW IT TO YOUR TEACHER!!!

I am sorry if this offended you in any sort or fashion. I am just stating how not doing things correct came and stabbed me in the back!!!!!

Thanks!

Laura, I don't really get unschooling.  It seem like you don't do any school at all!  Is that how it goes?  Or is it you do everything everyone else does, but just at your own pace... but that would be homeschooling.  And, then, how could you be in first or second grade math if you were actually doing it..... yeah, I'm confused.  It just doesn't seem like school.  Like how do you get into college?  Please don't take this offensively, I'm merely curious!  (Because it does sound quite fun!)

I use sixth-grade math.

I'm in sixth grade.

I use this like ten-year-old English book--McGraw, I think.

I finsh at two-thirty PM and start at nine-thirty AM.

My mom and dad have alternating work schedules, so Dad and Mom both do it.

I've never been in regular school and I'm worried about how I'll act when I finally do!

I get to sleep in!

@ Kenzie--Gosh, for me, waking up at 7:30 on a week day would be sleeping in. I normally sleep in on the weekends from 8:45-9:00. And since my mom let us have Christmas break this week, I got to sleep in 'till 8. I absolutely hate waking up at 5:20 to swim!! I'm always miserable. But thankfully, Starbucks is on the way there, so my sister and I sometimes stop on the way home and get coffee. :) Trust me, you wouldn't drown; swimming actually wakes you up.......that is, until two in the afternoon when you feel dead and go to sleep until dinner. :D
