Chatterbox: Down to Earth

We need a

We need a debate.  We need something to get CB up and running again.  Well, I forgot who said this (Brynne, possibly?)... she said the chatterbox is typically slow when school begins but by Christmas it's back to its normal self.  Okay, so I don't know why I bother.  But I hate to see CB like this.

So I was thinking a debate would be good; who doesn't love a good debate?  Okay, but I believe this should be a debate that is based solely off of opinion.  A religious debate, or Vegan debate, or even Evolution or Global Warming debate are all kind of a way of life for us.  They all have to do with what we believe in.  I don't think we should argue over something that means A LOT to us (like our religion) but maybe something that won't offend us (like cat vs. dog) if someone contradicts us. The only idea I have is "The Best Book" debate. Percy Jackson or Harry Potter?  I don't know if that's an easy thing to debate because I haven't read HP yet.  *hears gasps* I'm sorry, k, I will read them... eventually.  I'm busy reading school books right now, though. *sigh*  And I wouldn't be able to contribute much on that debate (except on how incredibly awesome PJ is!!).  So, if you can come up with a good debate that would allow everyone to participate, but won't hurt feelings, please, post!

I'll have to go with PJ. I seem to get into them better than HP.

Smile Actually, I came up with the screen name before I read Artemis Fowl (AF) believe it or not. But yeah, those books are good too.

Hmm. I definitely don't like the new Percy Jackson books. The Lost Hero seems really disorganized. I only read the first three chapters, but it was still a disappointment.

Hm, I have never read Harry Potter, so until then I would have to go with PJ. Although I own Harry Potter, so I will read it tonight and let you guys know tomorrow.

(I love debates!!!! I am just so happy! :))

I never read the PJ books.  But even if I had, I'd go with HP.  Nothing compares with HP.

Although I love PJ, I can hardly compare it to HP. I liked it mainly for the plot; I really, really love Greek mythology. HP is different. It's plot is cliche-ridden, yes, but I think it's much better written and it certainly has more interesting characters. Actually, I think it has the most interesting characters of any book I've ever read except for The Color Of Magic, and that's beside the point; we aren't discussing that book here. And JKR wove her plot together in an amazing way.

Man, I need to read HP.  Everyone is bugging me about it!  Well, since mostly everyone is going for HP, the only way for a debate is a person on either side, so I will be the defense against PJ!  Yeah.

Have to say though (if I were on the HP side) the fact that a somewhat nerdy man (no offense, Rick) is writing about a girl teenager, desperately in love, is kinda weird.

The other thing about these two books well, I hear so from my HP and PJ expert friend... (OMG.  You think you're obcessed with HP.  She could say the books in order from most pages to least without even looking or thinking.  I find it strange, but also talented).  Anway, the other think about these books is that they're aimed for different audiences.  Pj is aimed for the younger. Therefore, the writing is less mature and all that.  So I hear.

Anway, getting back to defending PJ!  Um, the characters are very believeable.  They act like NORMAL teens, and talk like them to.  A person can really relate.  HP, well, from the first 3 movies I've seen, are kinda NOT normal teens.  :)  (This is very hard and I probably make no sense.)  Well, all I know is, the movies are pretty bad.  The 2nd one, like, how come no one noticed the trail of spiders leading out?  Only Harry noticed the vital details?  Only he "happened" to come across all the frozen people and water... before anyone else?  I don't know about the book, but things weren't explained well in the movie.  Yup. That's all I got for now.

WOOHOOO! Debate!

Easy one. I read HP two years ago. I really liked PJ, but it is nothing compared to HP. The writing was more descriptive, and even though the charries in PJ were more believable, the ones in HP were more thought-provoking.

As I said, this debate was easy. To me at least. Now, if we had a Hunger Games Vs. Harry Potter debate.... oh boy, that would be tough.

Hm, Hunger Games?  I've never read those, or heard of those.  A series, I presume?  Maybe I'll look those up sometime.  :)

Come on, everyone, let's debate here!

I can say the books in order from most to least pages without looking or thinking. OotP, GoF, DH, HBP, PoA, CoS, SS/PS (the American version of which has exactly 309 pages). So yes, I do think I'm obsessed with HP. That has nothing to do with it, though; I could probably do it with many of the series I own and therefore have seen often, as long as the range is at least a hundred pages. It's simple. Just visualize all the books sitting together on a shelf, in chronological order or whichever order you prefer, and see which ones look the biggest in your mind. It's just like looking! Or can I only do that because I think in pictures, and most people don't? In that caese, maybe you can't do it... And as for the exact number of pages in SS, that's just because I specifically looked it up a year or so ago to see if it was longer than Princess Academy, because someone said she didn't think it was as long as HP and I wanted to see if it wasn't as long as at least the first book. It was. It was 9 pages longer, to be precise... What strange little details stay in the memory...

Oh, the characters in PJ are definitely normal. I certainly agree there. I just don't like reading about normal characters for some reason. I see enough normal people in real lif without them intruding upon my reading material, thanks very much. :) Some are all right, but an entire book with no-one else is as tiresome to me as a book whose characters are nearly all Mary Sues.

That's not to say, of course, that normal characters (or people...) are bad. Really! It's just that there are so many! It's hard for me to believe that everyone's like that, and further evidence of it just annoys me. So I've actually been known to close a book because its characters are too normal. That I didn't just shows how awesome PJ is--and how awesome HP must be if I'm still defending it. But its characters are interesting!

Still, I suppose it's true that most people would find normal characters easy to relate to. And they're great characters, I'm sure. I'm just unable to appreciate them because of my bias. If you've seen me insult them--particularly Percy--please just forget about it. I didn't really mean it; I was trying to figure out why I didn't enjoy reading about these people and I tried to guess, you see. I stated my guesses as fact, because I thought they were and didn't realize what they were doing...

But all this was completely pointless, wasn't it? It did nothing to defend HP or anything interesting like that... Oh, well.

But I never say they're bad just because they're normal, because they're not. I just don't want to spend my time reading about something I see every day. I'd rather imagine things that don't actually exist, or exist far away, or existed long ago, or exist tinily, or are otherwise unable to be seen/experienced by me.
