Chatterbox: Down to Earth

I would like

I would like to ask for some advice from everybuggy. As you may know, I have one cat, Darcy, but I REALLY REALLY want another cat, probably a kitten. My mom and sister want a kitten, too, but my dad refuses! It's not a money thing, he just says stuff like "Another cat is double the food, it's extra noise (Darcy meows a lot, so he thinks another cat would meow just as much), extra time and care, and I said NO!" How can I convince him to let me get another kitty in a mature way? (one that doesn't include begging - I've tried that)

Hmmm...  Well, first of all, you should buy a cat at the shelter.  You could tell your parents that by getting a cat at the SPCA, you're actually helping the cat\dog overpopulation crisis.  NEVER adopt cats at the pet store:  they're bred in terrible conditions.  That's all I can think of at the moment.

Well, I don't know if this would be considered begging, but at least a couple times a week tell him that you're a responsible person and you can take care of the cat. Tell him that you can get a quiet cat, and tell him that two cats are even more fun then one! My friend has two cats (unless you already have two?) and she takes really good care of them! Tell your dad that he doesn't have to do much, and you will take really good care of the cat!

(Darcy is a cute name!) How does Darcy act around other cats (or any animal)? (If you've ever seen your kitty around other cats...) Some cats enjoy new company, while others (my cat, Cat) hate it.  Most tend to hate it.  My cat flipped out when my friend brought her dog in the house.  And, my cat completely HATED me whenever I played with Bob or Alice (see the old pet thread).  How old is Darcy?  The older Darcy is, the less likely she is to enjoy another cat.  Really, think about the cat you already have.  I know, that's awful, but I've always wanted a kitten, but I've been stuck with the old grump for the time being.  Oh well...  Even so, is Darcy a Siamese cat?  They're the only ones who tend to make lots of noise.  If you get a cat at the animal shelter (which I'd recommend), there are soooo many cats in need there.  Don't go to a pet store...  They are bad...); it will most likely not be noisy.  Maybe you can even find a mute cat! :D:D I know this sounds awful, too, but you can volunteer to take care of the kitty. (That's what sold my parents on the gerbils and parakeets!) But you have to be sure you mean it.  My gerbils turned into my mom's gerbils, because I didn't take care of them, which made it harder to persuade her to let me have parakeets.  Just volunteer.  Feed it.  Clean its litter box.  Play with it.  Pet it.  Clean up after it when it throws up or doesn't use it's litter box.  Take care of it!

Wow, I wrote a lot!! :D:D:D:D

I'm thinking of volunteering at the local SPCA!!  My cat (the one who ran away:(:() hated any other cat.  It didn't matter, kitten or cat; she hated them all.  But the cats at the shelter are SO NICE!!! :):):)

Is the SPCA an animal shelter?  If so (and even if not), the cats are sweet!!!! :D:D:D:D:D Did you read about Alice the kitty?  If not, go to the thread I made called "PETS!!!!!I wasn't sure..." and look for the part where Kimmie asks me what my favorite animal on the street is.  Go down, past the part about Bobby, until you see the name Alice.  Read the whole series! She's so sweet, and lives down the street now!! :D:D:D:D

Aw! Darcy!!!! Is that like Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice???

I really want another kitten too, but it's my brother's turn to pick a cat, and I don't think he's EVER going to!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is your dad really strict? Cause I'm no help if he is. But if he's a softy, really sit down with him and tell him why you need a kitty so much, and tell him about how happy you all would be!! And tell him that when you go to look for one, that you would try to find one that's pretty quiet (if you don't spend much time with the kitty, ask the person you're getting it from) I never thought my parents would let me get a kitten, but then finally one just showed up!!! He got stuck in my dad's truck, and we heard him meowing!!!! My mom and brother wanted to get rid of him because he meowed CONSTANTLY!!!! (and he was the ugliest kitten in the world) (and he had gas) So we gave him away, but I cried for a whole day, so they made a deal with me. Now he still meows a LOT, but not as much, and we all LOVE him to DEATH, and he is the most beautiful kitty in the world!!!! Plus he's black, so he's really sleek. Of course, he's feral (wild) so he's really feisty, and he attacks our other (really fat) cat, Casey. But otherwise, he's really sweet!!!!

His name is JoJo, though I have so many nicknames for him that he answers to pretty much anything that is said in his general direction. Really, if you say cheese, he'll look at you and meow. Or, chirp, really.

He love to eat watermelon...

and he's really weird....

BUT I LOVE HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for your help, everybuggy! I definitely will get the kitten from a shelter if I do get it. Actually, I'll probably get it from Pet Rescue by Judy. That's a non-profit organization here in Central Florida run by a lady named Judy. The good part is, it's a firm no-kill belief place.

Anyway, we can't exactly figure out what breed Darcy is. She looks sort of like a Russian Blue (google it) but she was adopted from a litter of the neighbor's kittens, so we're not quite sure of her bloodlines. She's rather spoilt, but we love her anyway. She'll turn 4 years old in March. Why I want a kitten instead of an adult cat is that from my readings, a resident cat feels less threatened if the new addition to the home is younger than they are. Darcy hasn't really been around any other cats since she was born. The only other cat she's really seen is our neighbor's cat, who she just sort of circled warily for a bit, like she didn't know what to make of him.

I don't even have a cat. I think everyone who does have a cat is soooo lucky!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My dad's allergic, so that's the number one reason I'm not getting a cat. Plus, my dad doesn't like cats. He thinks they're stupid! Isn't he mean? I think cats can be smart, and they're so cute! Every time I say "I wanna cat." he says "I want a Mercedes." (which is a pretty nice car) that's his way of saying not gonna happen. So, I think what ever I do, I won't get a cat.

Is Darcy quiet? That's ussually a sign that it's a Russian Blue.

Darcy? Quiet? *laughs hysterically for a full five minutes* Darcy is probably the loudest cat you'll ever meet, so I suppose that rules out Russian Blue. :)

The best thing I can think of right now for you to do is to SHOW him that you're responsible. If you do extra chores and make sure he never has to do anything to take care of your cat, he might eventually change his mind. If this doesn't work, see if you can come up with a compromise, such as you helping to pay for the cat's needs (if you can) or saying you'll be responsible for everything the cat does.
