Braces

Braces

BracesUndecided

I (unfortunately) have them. I got my bottom ones on two days ago and then they put these blue balls of glue on two of my back teeth so I don't bite the brackets off since I have too much of an overbite. Well, the next day when I woke up, one of the blue balls (AKA "speed bumps") was gone. We had to go back in to get another one put in, but then the other fell out, and no one's in at the orthodontist today or tommorrow or the day after that! So I have to wait until Tuesday!!! We were looking at mouthguards today for me to wear until then, but all the boxes said "Do not use if you wear braces or any other mouth appliances". So right now my life stinks. All I can eat is soup, mashed potatoes and gravy, apple sauce, and the only snacks I can eat are ice cream and smoothies. I got rubber bands on my braces the first time though! Green for St. Patrick's Day ♣. Does anybuggy else here have braces??? How do you cope with them???

@Laura: It does affect your singing a bit. (I have to sing with braces.) But about the only problem is it's harder to pronounce the words, and I already have problems with some sounds. I dislike the /ch/ sound very much! *Glares at /ch/ sound and crosses arms*. But other than that, it isn't too too bad. But it's probably different with everybody.

Mm, yes, thank you.  Sadly, singing in Italian does come up with a few difficult things to pronounce.  Not to mention I'm about to start German.  Ugh.

Invisalign (I think that's how you spell it) is like plastic molds that you have to take on and off and on and off all the time. (but you exchange them with different ones of course) And about your singing thing, there are these type of braces that are placed on the inside of your mouth. Not the outside. That's what some models, athletes?, and wind instrument players sometimes where. Or so I've heard. Hope that helps. ;-) Olive says Hi.

My friend (also named Emma) just got her top braces a few weeks ago and her bottom ones this Monday. She got her top braces the day we had a concert (band) and could barely play, it messed up her embouchure (mouth position on the instrument) so much! She also got a big blister-thing from them rubbing and then while she was playing a couple weeks ago it popped! She said it hurt so bad! It's like a raw blister that's being scraped by metal every time you talk! Then she got her bottom braces and now she's having some speaking problems!! The braces make her say her s's  weird. Lol. I feel bad for her! I will most likely not need braces. My teeth are really straight, except for one tooth that overlaps the tooth beside it . . .

I won't be needing braces either, my teeth are 99% straight. I'm glad of it. For a while before all my, um, grown-up teeth came in, they thought I would need them but apparently not anymore.

Aw, poor you. :( I will be getting braces soon. They sound awful. I'm getting some teeth pulled because apparently they are getting in the way. The gap will fill itself up, I guess. Yeah, it doesn't sound like much fun.

Andy P. C. says rpgp. Rip gap was the first thing I thought of. *sighs* You're right, Leaf, Andy will always be a mystery...

Yes, very helpful, thank you!!  I was reading some more about Invisalign (you were right), and I thought, they don't sound like the right thing for me, but then again, maybe the fact that they can be taken out is good for when I'm singing.  I don't know.... I'm going to think about it for a while, and talk to my parents.  Thanks again, everyone!!

Ugh, yesterday I went to the orthodontist.  I got my colors changed (dark blue on top and lavender on the bottom).  That was the good thing.  The bad thing: I got rubber bands on the right side of my mouth.  It's been hurting soo much!  When they first put them on, I wanted to yank them off right then and there.  And now I have a choir performance tonight and I don't know how I'll be able to open my mouth wide enough!  Luckily, the pain has subsided from when I first got them, but not by much.  Now I look forward to mealtimes to open and close my mouth a lot when I take them off.  It feels so good.  Anyone else have rubber bands and hate them?

I haven't gotten any elastics. Yet... But you know what really stinks? (it wouldn't stink so much if I put wax, which I'll do after this post,) I got my wires changed a few weeks ago, and yesterday, the top one started to shift, and on one side of my mouth, the wire kept on poking my gum, (woe is I) and my mom had to put the wire back in place with a tweezer. (yep, my mom, computer person, with tweezers, but didn't hurt so much) and it was all better. But when I woke up, what joy, my wire had moved again, and as I type this, the wire keeps on poking my gum. My mom'll hopefully put it back in place again. And I'm going to the ortho sometime this week. Oh yeah, does anyone have the type of wire where, in the middle, in front of your two front teeth, makes a little u? Mine is upside down right now (thanks mom) Sigh... To think I was excited about braces. Undecided

Oh, poor you, Alexa!!  I remember when I first got my braces in fourth grade.  A couple weeks later, the wire got moved and almost came out of the little holes you stick it into.  (I only had four brackets on the top.)  My dad tried to move it, but we ended up going to the orthodontists at 7 pm when they were closed (they opened it up just for me) and getting it fixed.  And also, when I got my chain, it pushed my wire back in my mouth and it was poking me a lot.  So I know how you feel.  Oh, and I'm sorry, but I don't really know what you're talking about for your wire with the 'u' in the middle.  I guess that's probably a good thing. :/  And I get what you're saying.  I was excited, too.  *sigh*  I didn't realize what a mistake that was.

I have braces, unfortunately.

I'm getting them in 2 phases. My 1st was was when I was 7 (and I had a retainer before that), and U remember nothing about them. They were taken off when I was 8.

My 2nd phase came in September. I'm in choir, and it doesn't affect my singing at all. I was able to sing a solo in front of a lot of people without problems. I suppose it depends on what kind of braces you have. Laura, maybe you should ask your orthodontist whether it'll make a difference.

I currently just have a wire on the front of my top teeth and another on the bottom, and colored brackets on each tooth.

And a week ago, a potato chip became stuck in one of the braces. It came out, but the bracket was broken, and it pushed the wire so that it poked the side of my mouth 24/7. It hurt so badly, and was extremely irksome!

Today I went to the orthodontist, and they fixed it, but then they noticed that one tooth wasn't growing properly, so they moved the wire so that it bent around it, and it now sticks out and hurts to smile! *sighs*

I have braces, but they decided as of last appointment that they were going to give me headgear (for nighttime) because I apparently have a 12mm overbite, which is supposedly large... and thicker wires. So on Friday, this week, I have to leave school at 11AM to go to my orthodontist and get them. I've lost 3 more teeth since last visit, so they'll be happy to hear that. As one of them told me, "The more teeth you lose, the quicker you'll get the rest of your braces on." The rest? I only have them on the top 4, but this summer I'm getting them all on, and I need to keep them on for at least 2 and 1/2 years minimum. *groans* Maybe I'll just run away to a place close to my grandma's house in the Catskills and live like Sam did in My Side of the Mountain. That sounds like a plausible option at the moment. *sigh* *packs bag* I'll try to bring a computer and those things so I can still talk to you guys on CB. *looks around* *sighs again* Wish me luck...

Good luck from everybuggy here!

@ Ema: In first phase in fourth grade, I had headgear.  I warn you, in the beginning it's really frustrating.  I would try to get the correct hole into the wire and then sometimes it would snap against my cheek.  And when I first tried to put the end into the holes on the bracket inside my mouth, it would take me soo long.  Of course, it also just has to creak at night.  No, of course headgear is not a horrible, evil contraption that makes your mouth sore.  It is wonderful pieces of wire. *sigh*  Good luck, Ema!!!! Pretend I never said any of this that might make you feel way worse.
