Hello CBers!

Chatterbox: Down to Earth

Hello CBers!

Hello CBers!

My name is Arcade. I was originally on this website around 10 years ago - I believe I stopped posting regularly around age 13. I went by Danie, or Danielle P back then.

This forum was very important to be growing up, and with a unique barrage of fresh time at my disposal, I decided to check back on the forum to see how things have changed, or remained the same.

Here is some more information about me:

My pronouns are he/him. When I went on this site originally, they were she/her. A lot changes in 10 years!

I am a computer science major. I am currently going to college for it. I am pursuing a minor degree in music theory as well.

I work at an afterschool program for children. I just started a couple of weeks ago! Unfortunately, I also just recently sprained my ankle, so I haven't been able to return to work.

In my spare time, I draw, play video games, and compose music. I also enjoy board games and table top rpgs, like D&D! (And I'm learning to bake, with ..... marginal success.)

Feel free to ask me questions! I still remember a fair bit from back then.

Sorry, just interrupting to say: there's still a lot of ignorance about like queer culture or whatever now irl too :) for example, up until maybe a year and a half ago, I thought the only connotation of the word "gay" was "happy" (imagine my confusion when I read Coyote Sunrise and was like ***MAYBE SPOILER*** why in the world did this person's family disown(??) her just because she was happy??? ***MAYBE SPOILER FINISHED***), and I wasn't even aware that things like aroace, transgender, pronouns (yes I'm horrible :) ) or whatever even existed until I joined the CB (about a year ago)!! I'm not sure if that's what you're suggesting, but I would say that it's definitely still a problem :)

my situation was/is kinda like yours btw; not malice, just ignorance. My new school focuses a lot more on these topics though, so I do agree that it is much, much better now!!

and while I'm here- Discworld!!!!!!!!!!

same haha. although ignorance and malice are pretty intertwined... there are definitely more resources now, but there's still a ton of hate (and stuff that might be in between). and ignorance. and in some ways people knowing more isn't always good since it makes it easier for them to target people or like use gay as an insult or stuff. i don't know what it was like back then, though.

interesting about the queerness. i've seen it go from "not really talked about a ton" to "talked about a bit more" to "horrible pushback and impersonations" to the wonderful haven it is today. although it could have been talked about more than i thought when i got here; i also didn't know that queer people existed XD

and yess Danse Macabre!!! The violin solos sound so fun to play. and yes Vivaldi :D you cannot convince me that The Four Seasons are not genius. People just hate that they're overplayed, and guess what? Like most overplayed things (Peer Gynt, Holst Jupiter, Bach Orchestral Suite no 3 Badinerie, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy or anything from The Nutcracker (ahhhh it's the best)) it's amazing. (The Nutcracker in particular.) not always the best thing the composer has ever done, but still usually very good. though when it's overplayed there is also a bigger library of poorly-done recordings to choose from. If you're going to answer again - what do you mean by repetitive? if you mean that there's a lot of repeated content in different pieces, that's because of the amount of music he (and any baroque composer) had to write. for instance, Bach had to write a cantata a month at Weimar. since composers and musicians were usually employed by the court or church or some big important place, they didn't have much freedom, so if they couldn't think of something new they would just reuse an old thing. for instance the first movement of Bach's third partita is reused in some cantatas i think. you probably know that but eh. i don't tend to find his music repetitive in like "not a lot of variation in the actual piece" personally, and i'm very very sensitive to that (i don't like a good portion of modern music because of that - even when it's really cool, often it's just the same thing repeated over and over again, which is unfortunate). but i also haven't listened to a lot of Vivaldi in a while...

I've meant to watch some operas since I have some opera and ballet and such streaming services but haven't gotten around to it. Samson and Delilah is high on the list of ones i want to see because of the Bachanal, which I've played but been a fan of since far before that.

if you want to post any of your art that would be really cool! you don't have to though.

Discworld! I just started it. A friend recommended I start on Mort, which I just finished. I have Color of Magic on hold at my library!

I think I've seen some old posts from you! I'm Periwinkle (she/her), but call me Peri - everyone does. I've been here since January 2021.

What video games do you like to play? My favorite one to play is Skyrim. Also, do you have any advice on how to get into D&D? I have a character and stuff but I can't understand to play; I'm thinking I'll join my high school's D&D club though.

Hi Peri!

I play a lot of rpgs like Fallout or Skyrim too! My main bread and butter are some of the older titles though; I play a lot of stuff from the 90s and 2000s, like Icewind Dale, Neverwinter Nights, or Planescape, to name a few.

I also like competitive games, like Splatoon. And I've been playing a ton of Pokemon lately! I just recently finished playing Pokemon Mystery Dungeon DX. It's a lot of fun!

I would definitely recommend joining your D&D club. They will be people there who would love to teach you! I also recommend watching video tutorials online - D&D has a huge community, and there are lots of resources for new players! Honestly, my best advice is to get into a game and start playing. The easiest way to learn is to play!

Hi there!! Love your name btw.

I'm Genderfluid, so today xe/she. I've been on here 2 years now, and it's really cool to talk to an old CBer!

How did you find CB back then?

Hiya!

I found CB through the magazine! Cricket Magazine was my favorite as a kid (though I also liked the one about science, can't remember what it was called), and when I heard they were doing a story where you could submit characters online, I had to join! (It was called Crowd Sorcery, I explain it in another post)

It was my first real introduction to interacting with other people on the internet, and I loved it!

Helllloooo, Arcade!! I'm Cloud Bunny, pronouns they/them. You also play D&D? Cool! How complicated do you play it--if you follow all the rules I imagine it could get pret-ty complex. My friend made up his own table-top RPG, and he is currently updating it, so me and two others in the campaign have to restart!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh well. At least it will be better--

Hi Cloud Bunny!

The amount of rules I follow at any given time is how much I can remember, haha! The game can get pretty tricky, but my group usually isn't too rule focused, either. We follow the rule of cool, mostly!

It is super cool that your friend made his own ttrpg! Awesome! I've always thought it would be fun to make a table top rpg. I wish your campaign luck!

Hi Arcade! It's nice to meet you! I love your name :) I'm sorry you sprained your ankle, I hope it gets better soon. It's so cool that you compose music! I like to think I can do a fair amount of things, but composing is not one of my talents :/ (Sometimes I sit down at the piano and just play whatever comes into my mind, but I need to be actually hearing the notes and playing them; I can't just think of a tune on my own.) I really enjoy board games too! Have you played Settlers of Catan?

What were your favorite CB traditions from when you were on here? Is there anything you'd like to see revived? Do you have any recommendations for old fun threads to read? (sorry, that was a lot of questions :P)

Also, I just thought you should know: the site will probably be moved to a new address at some point in the future and upgraded. Which means that we may lose some of its content (we might not, though), so if there's anything you want to save (solo writes, etc) you might want to go ahead and do that. Nothing's been decided yet, but here's the thread where you can find more details about it: https://www.cricketmagkids.com/chatterbox/chirpatcricket/node/572240
