Vexillology club!

Vexillology club!

Vexillology is the study of flags. NAVA (North American Vexillological Association) have five guidelines for flags that must be followed:

1. Keep it simple. It should be so simple a child can draw it from memory.

2. Give meaningful symbolism. It should have symbolism unique to the representation of the flag so much so that you don't feel the urge to put the name on the flag.

3. NEVER PUT TEXT ON A FLAG, ESPECIALLY NOT THE NAME. A flag is a flag, not a name tag.

4. Don't put too many chaotic colours.

5. Keep it distinct from other flags.

So, the club is to create our own flags for micronations or such and show them here! MAKE SURE THAT YOU FOLLOW THE FIFTH RULE or it'll be zapped. (i.e. copyright?) Make sure they're your own flags.

Not just for countries. I know; some of the states are horrible. Just Seal on a Bedsheet.

I have a micronation, and I created a flag I satirically called "[insert micronations name] if it were a US city or state".

OOH I love making flags!! I have a friend who makes custom flags for people. sadly getting a full-size replica of my micronation's flag was a tad on the expensive side, but I bought one in patch form. if I get the chance to, I'll take a picture and send it to this thread.

my micronation's name is Lykos (or Lykosia, debating a change) if anyone's curious! I'm someday hoping to get more members... right now it's only me, and my Royal Guard (my dog, my cat, and my fish). we're a constitutional monarchy :)

Hey I also have a micronation, Amicatierra and Baltica! Personally i just use the printer to make my flags. I designed the flag and coat of arms. Oh, I recently added Baltica (it used to be just Amicatierra) to reflect my Latvian ancestry (it's just a triangle in the Baltic sea between Gotland, Sweden, and Liepaja, Latvia). I also wrote a national anthem (it's just various verses of Canada and Mexico taken, mixed up, and have new lyrics written). The micronation's "theme" is peace and friendship. Here's the flag (I'll post the coat of arms and my satirical "Amicatierra if it were a US city" flag later)

Also I forgot to mention that my micronation has 6 citizens; my immediate family, and one of my friends. It will soon be seven (I'm applying on behalf of my dog thanks to an article in the constitution allowing animals to gain citizenship). I'm the prime minister, and it's a republic. Oh and it's part of the British Crown unrecognised commonwealth state given that one of its anthems is just "God save the King". Did you know that the lyrics and title of the British anthem change depending on whether a male or female monarch is in power? For example, when Elizabeth II was in power, it was

God save our gracious Queen

Long live our noble Queen

God save the Queen!

Send her victorious

Happy and glorious

Long to reign over us

God save the Queen!

Now that King Charles is in power it is now

God save our gracious King

Long live our noble King

God save the King!

Send him victorious

Happy and glorious

Long to reign over us

God save theKing!

Sorry, I'm rambling.

Back with more Latin mottos because I'm also quite the rambler when it comes to my obsessions, a lot of British/English things change gender I believe! Just of the top of my head I can think of their title "defendor of the faith"-- for a long time I'd only heard of fidei defensor, the masculine, but just yesterday my teacher actually told me that it sometimes changes to fidei defensatrix, the feminine. There's also the message on their coins, "by the grace of god the king/queen" or "dei gratia rex/regina".

So um, I live in South Carolina, NOT by the beach OR the mountains, in a tiny town called (REDACTED), where our only claim to fame is an amusement park, The world's spiciest pepper, and the greenway nearby. I do NOT have an accent, or look southern, becasue even though ivellived here all my life, none of my family is from here. Anyways, our motto is something like 'when I breathe, I hope' and our flag is a palmetto tree and a moon, because in the revolutionary war, fort moultrie, an American fot, was made of palmetto trees, because it was on the beach and there were no oak trees. but the palmettos are the reason south carolina isnt a british isle, because of the palmetto trees, as they absorbed the cannons, and the fort faced the sea, so American troops forced the british away. its blue because that was the color of their uniforms. im not sure why the moon is there though. anyone else from south carolina?

Not from SC, just here to add (once again, because I talk way too much about my obsessions, someone please tell me to shut up, I was summoned by the mention of mottos) that it's actually one of a few states that has more than one motto, and one of only two that have two mottos specifically in Latin. You're right that "while I breathe I hope" is the translation for one of them, the other is "prepared in mind and resources".

(N.B. - I may be off about the "only two states have two Latin mottos" thing as a certain wikipedia page claims that SC is the only state to have this characteristic. However, I know from my own research that Maryland also does, meaning their could be others the page isn't mentioning either.)
