Vexillology club!

Vexillology club!

Vexillology is the study of flags. NAVA (North American Vexillological Association) have five guidelines for flags that must be followed:

1. Keep it simple. It should be so simple a child can draw it from memory.

2. Give meaningful symbolism. It should have symbolism unique to the representation of the flag so much so that you don't feel the urge to put the name on the flag.

3. NEVER PUT TEXT ON A FLAG, ESPECIALLY NOT THE NAME. A flag is a flag, not a name tag.

4. Don't put too many chaotic colours.

5. Keep it distinct from other flags.

So, the club is to create our own flags for micronations or such and show them here! MAKE SURE THAT YOU FOLLOW THE FIFTH RULE or it'll be zapped. (i.e. copyright?) Make sure they're your own flags.

This is not about making flags, but the new flag for my state is so ugly and it's the first day to officially fly it...

Utah could be better... why do they feel the need to put a beehive in a hexagon! Just make the flag the beehive itself? Its at least better than seal on a bedsheet.

I wrote a letter to the mayor of my city proposing a new flag design. We just have a seal on a bedsheet again.

Yeah I agree about Utah. Really you wrote a letter? That's sad that they ignored it. For my state, I liked a couple submissions, but they didn't pick them.

I don't think they ignored it; they just haven't got around to reading it yet. My hometown has 50,000-ish people according to its Wikipedia page and it once fell for the dihydrogen monoxide paradox, so I assume there are also many more emails.

Wow, my hometown (and the place I still live) has around 300,000 people (but it's still a capital!). Oh the dihydrogen monoxide paradox? That kind of reminds me of the third pound burger paradox...maybe that's just me.

yess vexillology!! so cool

the new york state flag broke like half of those rules XD i don't even know what's going on with it. we got justice with her scales and blindfold, another woman i'm pretty sure is liberty?, an eagle, a globe, a sun with a smiley face, mountains, river, boats, a sword, e x c e l s i o r

less of a flag and more of a crest they slapped onto a piece of fabric. i still like it, though XD

the nyc flag is...slightly less chaotic. at least there's only three colors (and a probably incorrect date, shhh)...

i have Opinions about each of the five borough's flags, too, but i won't get into those lol (queens is objectively the coolest tho)

and i've also designed some flags for some of my fantasy countries and cities! i know i have some more polished drawings somewhere, but idk where those are. if i can't find them, i'll just share some of my sketches :p

I once made a flag for all of Scandinavia or the Scandinavian language; it combines Denmark, Sweden and Norway

The state I live in, Illinois, has a very interesting flag. To much stuff is in it and I think it could be better. I live in Chicago and I sincerely like the Chicagoan flag, though.

My city's flag epically broke rule #3... it's literally just words and a little tiny picture at the top XD

The Floridian flag broke rule number 3 and number 1(the crest in the middle is so complicated I can't even draw it)and sadly my town is so small we don't even have a flag,a mayor,or a courtroom.honestly we're just more of a part of a county.

I’m not someone who knows a ton about vexillology, so forgive me if this is a silly question, but do these rules apply to country flags only? As someone who has an obsession with US state mottos I've noticed a lot of them, especially the ones in Latin (which are the ones I know), are on state flags. Massachusetts, Virginia, New York, etc.
