An Ideal World

An Ideal World

A week or two ago, we were discussing income inequality on the random thoughts thread, and I thought it would be interesting to have a thread where we can talk about what needs to change in the world, and how we can get it to change. T

There are so many problems out there, like climate change and income inequality and extreme poverty. For instance, a few people have billions of dollars, while others struggle to even have acceptable health care and education. Sometimes these problems seem almost impossible to solve. But I think we can do something to make the world a better place. What do you want the US to be like thirty years from now? What do you think should be done to make it that way? De-internetize? Go on school strikes? Fix problems at a community level? This is the thread to talk about it!

I'll post my own ideas once this goes up :)

I think people should become more concerned about the enviornment. I remember once my brother told me that in 12 years (from the time he told me), climate change would be irreversible (!!!). We HAVE to do small steps to save our planet. Here are a few:

1. If you have a recycling bin or a recycling center nearby, use it. Clean paper, glass, and plastic can all be recycled. You can look up online for more information.

2. Use as little electricity as possible. I don't mean you have to live in a dark house as soon as sunset (especially winter). I mean, try to conserve unnessecary energy. In fact, just now I realized that the kitchen light was on for no reason, so I paused my typing to turn it off.

3. Don't waste water or food. A study showed that the average American wastes 31% of their food! Come on. This means that you are wasting resources and lessening the amount of food the world as a whole can eat. Instead, only buy what you need, and any unnessecary food, if it has not gone bad, can be given to a food drive or be composted. And for water, DO NOT WASTE ANY WATER IN THE SINK OR THE SHOWER THAT YOU WILL NOT USE!

4. Spread the word. Give people these tips. If people all over the world take these small steps, we can change the direction of our climate and save our planet before it's too late. Remember: We live in Planet A. There is no Planet B!

I don't want to ruin the optimism of this thread, BUT...

I don't think it's possible to make an ideal world, or what's called a utopia, without making a dystopia in a process. I'm not saying that we should get depressed about this, or that we can't do anything to change it and should just be lost in gloom. (Let's not lock ourselves in the closet and mope over all the problems in the world, that never does anything)

Sure, we can make a difference and solve problems, but there's still going to be more. It's not possible to solve all of them. Inventions that we make to help always end up having a negative impact as well. Cars, which help people get from place to place, cause global warming, which is causing ice to melt. Computers, which are very convenient, cause depression (learned that the hard way). Cities make less room for animals, and now wildlife is supressed and animals are becoming endangered. Genetically modified organisms, although they could help world hunger, might also be causing cancer, acid reflux, etc. Artifical intelligence has the capacity to be dangrous, and also very useful to humanity. It seems everything we make has a consequence, both positive and negative, depending on how people decide to use it. Perfection is utterly impossible.

If we removed all of these inventions, we wouldn't have any advantages and disadvantages from them. We'd all by leaving primitive, simple lives, or be living in a dystopia where everything is overly controlled so everything can be "perfect." So there is no perfect world.

I apologize if this got too dark, but I just wanted to make a point that there is no such thing as a perfect world. I sincerely hope I didn't make everything worse by writing this post. Maybe I shouldn't have written it. I'm just concerned that somebody will think that a perfect world is possible, just like I thought I could achieve perfection (I was completely devastated when I learned that it's not possible). However, if the title of this thread was just meant to be about what you could imagine a perfect world being like, then everyone can just ignore this (do NOT dwell on all of the possibly disturbing things I said, please, remember that problems can still be solved, just not every single one of them).

@Admins, I'm sorry this post is dark and sort of long. *sighs*

I fully support all efforts to help solve world problems, every single effort, however small. This thread is meant to be about how to make things better, and that's what I'd like to focus on!

Oh, I see. I knew I was misinterpreting it somehow.

I can definitely see where you're coming from! I agree that there will never be a perfect world. But although perfection isn't exactly going to happen, improvement certainly is! Look at the working conditions of British and American people - although many are still in unfair and poorly paid positions, it's nothing like what it used to be in the Industrial Revolution, when children worked all day in factories and living conditions were horrendous. That changed because people took action. The problems of the modern world can be solved too, if we take action! That's why I made this thread :) It's for envisioning a "perfect" world, not so that that world can happen, because it can't, but so that we can move closer to it.

Ah, I understand now. I'll try to post some problem solution ideas later.
