Paradoxes

Is it possible to solve paradoxes? Here are some common paradoxes, and what do you think about them?

What came first, the chicken or the egg?

If someone says, "I always lie," is that statement true or false?

The Time Traveler Paradox: If someone invents a time machine and goes back in time, kills their grandfather before he meets their grandmother, so then their father is never born, so they are never born, so they never invented the time machine in the first place . . . well, what do you make of that?

So, hopefully your brain gets fried at least substantually, and be sure to post any more you come across! Happy thinking!

I just realized! Saying, "I always lie" is not a paradox! I will explain it if anyone wants.

It's not a paradox because if they say "I always lie" it is only not a paradox if it's a lie. If you don't always lie, you can lie by saying "I always lie", which then, if it's a lie, you don't always lie, but you might lie sometimes. It doesn't imply that you always tell the truth.

Oh, yeah, true. But I think "I am lying" is, because it means that at that moment, the person is lying (meaning that they aren't, etc. yknow)

Time Traveler Paradox answer: The person is never born.

Explanation: After they practically change the course of time into a time warp with the time machine, their grandfather, even if he is once again alive(origional person was never born, so he never invented the time machine), may never meet their grandmother. He may have a grandson, but they will have different DNA, making them a different person(since no two people are exactly identical except for identical twins). Therefore, the person is never born.

I always lie Paradox answer: He is lying.

Explanation: If 'i always lie' is false, that does not mean he always tells the truth. It means he sometimes tells the truth, and sometimes lies. This time, he is lying, because the statement is false.

Chicken/egg paradox answer: The egg came first.

Explanation: An egg must be there for a chicken to develop. However, a chicken is not needed to create an egg, but the egg could be created by other natural means

Also, the egg evolved say 250 million years before the chicken.

I know "I always lie" is not actually a paradox, but what about "I'm lying right now"? :)
