Chatterbox: Down to Earth

On the subject

On the subject of... A new weekly column that'll be talking about everything from games to the meaning of life! (42, BTW)

What do you guys want the first topic to be? I think maybe I'll start off with something a bit less serious...

Same, Leeli! Although I would like to learn more about the subject, to understand it better. But I agree, I think there is no global warming.

Ahh, thank you! I thought I’d be the only one and everyone would think I’m crazy...:/

Wait, whoa—I just realized part of my comment got cut off!

I was trying to say that the reason I’m not concerned about global warming is because there isn’t conclusive evidence for it, and there is evidence against it.

Apparently, cows farting cause a tiny bit of global warming. How weird is that?!

Also, you know the Doomsday Clock? Says how close we are to a man-made global catastrophe? In 2019, it's 2 minutes to midnight because of Nucleur weapons and climate change. Does anyone know how long two minutes on the Doomsday Clock actually is? Like how long in regular time do they actually think it will be?? Clearly it doesn't mean 2 minutes.

Those "two minutes" don't correspond to real time––The Doomsday Clock tries to bring attention to big problems like global warming and nuclear weapons by giving people a symbolic time until we can't fix those issues anymore. Every year they assess how the planet is doing and announce a new time.--Admin

I'm going to try and stay civil but I don't agree with anyone who doesn't think global warming is happening. Also the term "farting cows" needs to be taken out of people's vocabulary. When cows are not fed correctly their digestion backfires and they release a lot of methane through belching. This is actually a problem though blown way out of proportion by people who are trying to prove that environmental activists are trying to take away America's hamburgers. Also I would like to know what type of evidence there is against global warming. If you are having trouble finding information on the subject I would be more than happy to provide you with multiple articles/websites published by people whose job it is to remain unbiased and look at scientific evidence without an opinion.

Climate change is an important topic. We may limit comments due to lack of staff time to check specific facts.

I agree with Spell Caster, and have another thing to add on that worries me; it’s not the question, ‘will global warming happen’, it’s the question; how badly will it effect our planet. The best we can hope for in the future is a rise in the earth’s temperature of only 2 degrees. Even though that might not seem like a huge difference, it could mean horrible droughts, beaches being destroyed, and more.

(I got this information from a study from NYU, also, if you want to learn more about the topic, I recommend the book Reason in a Dark Time by Dale Jamieson, a professor at NYU)

@Artimerrx thank you. I am happy to know that I am not alone in my opinions. "...horrible droughts, beaches being destroyed, and more." is already happening if you pay attention to the news. I once lived by a beach that was constantly under construction because it was slowly being destroyed by multiple environmental factors. I also couldn't continue to buy a certain brand of meat because the droughts in Australia are so bad. And just for the record @Leeli I don't think you're crazy - just misinformed.

I'm not even going to try to stay neutral. Global warming is happening.

Um, so, here's why global warming is a problem, even when the climate has change before. Warming now is a problem because the climate overall is increasing several degrees at an alarmingly quick rate. Usually, change by a degree takes a very long time to happen- centuries, or thousands of years. Yes, the climate does fluctuate a bit, but it never increases this much this quickly. And I read in the NY Times, which is a pretty good source, that this is what will happen:

Two-degree warming: no more tropical reefs, sea level rise of several meters, and abandonment of the Persian Gulf. Three-degree warming: Forests in the arctic, no more costal cities. Four-degree warming: Europe is in permanent drought, a lot of land in China, India and Bangladesh become desert, Polynesia is underwater, the Colorado river is a stream, the American Southwest is uninhabitable. Five-degrees could make humans extinct. The article in question is called Losing Earth: The Decade We Almot Stopped Climate Change.

Feel free to correct me if I got any of the science wrong!

Debates over climate change have gotten nasty here in the past. As cool as it would be to debate with y'all, I don't feel like the CB is the best location to do that, seeing as we can't post links to enforce our claims, and it puts the Admins under a lot of strain to fact check and comb over our posts.

I agree.  Especially since the discussion is already going downhill fast.  It's amazing how people can seem so polite, but as soon as politics enters the discussion it's ranging from haugty and dismissive to downright angry.

Ok, I probably shouldn't have said climate change, sorry! However, I still would like to hear any of your ideas and tips on helping the environment in general. There are always other issues such as deforestation and trash islands in the ocean. Maybe something along those lines for a topic?

Ok, well, people should definitely recycle and reuse are trash more. And try not to use cars when you can simply walk to the place you're going.

Oh, actually, all this reminds of an article I read a while ago. It doesn't pertain too closely to anything, but it was very interesting so I'd thought I'd share it.

So, does everyone know what are passenger pigeons are? If not, they are a type of pidgeon very closely related to the common rock pigeon. They went extinct sometime during the early 1900's because of over-hunting.

Well, scientists have discovered that they can actually bring back passenger pidgeons. All they have to do is take a female rock pidgeon, and change a few of its DNA genes. This actually won't do anything to the rock pidgeon. Instead what would happen is that when the rock pigeon laid an egg, that egg would hatch a passenger pigeon, and not a rock pigeon. I think it was interesting, because it was humans who got rid of the passenger pigeon, and now we have a chance to fix our mistakes.
