Chatterbox: Down to Earth

Update on my life

I bet we’ve all changed so much, so here’s what I’ve been up to! The last time I was here, Cho moving to Japan was big news. If you guys could give me summaries of your lives since I left (end of summer 2016) I’d love to read them.

After leaving the CB, I entered seventh grade. Trump became president, I got obsessed with Divergent and some other fandoms. Seventh grade was honestly a really bad year for me. I wasn’t a great person, and went through a lot of friend drama. Basically, I was still that cringey sixth grader you guys had to deal with. :)

I think I played clarinet when I was on CB, but my obsession multiplied. I did Junior Districts, got into a select band. I switched ballet studios and went en pointe.

I think of eighth grade as the year I became a good person. I had the same kids in all four of my core classes, so I became the sweet little sister that everyone loved. It was the first time I realized that my classmates are nice, and I can be nice to them. I know it wasn’t real popularity, as people liked me in the she’s-so-cute way and not the I-admire-her way. Still, it was exhilarating. I got into Hamilton.

I planned to quit ballet and continue clarinet in high school because I was so much better at clarinet and had no future in ballet. In the end, I decided I was being fake and I should do what makes me happy, even if it’s less impressive on a college application.

In ninth grade, I got into all the musicals that followed: Wicked, Dear Evan Hansen, Be More Chill, and Heathers. Tell me if you’re a Hamilfan too, please.

I sort of shrunk back into a shell? My friend clique was problematic, so I ditched them. I’ve always considered myself an extrovert, but I think I’m an introvert now.

So tell me: What have you all been up to? And while you’re here, give me a quote you like. I’m a sucker for good quotes.

“Even when the dark comes crashing through, when you need a friend to carry you, when you’re broken on the ground: You will be found.” --Dear Evan Hansen

Hello hello, Mei! Starseeker here. Ah, I started being active pretty soon after you left-- so I remember you, but I bet you don't remember me?

We actually have very similar life stories. I was already playing clarinet and doing ballet when I entered the CB world, but I dropped ballet after 7th grade because it was too competitive and stressful. I kept up with the clarinet, though, and am now in the top band in my school. In addition to playing the clarinet, I also play several kinds of ukulele, rudimentary piano, sing, and I want to learn bass guitar. My fashion changed too-- from being a dumbfounded little kid with mismatched outfits to a darkly fashionable (or at least, I hope so) teen who always wears high heels and combat boots (I'm struggling with the fact that I am now considered "shortly average height"). I like Hamilton on a pretty basic level-- I have a huge respect for Lin Manuel Miranda for writing that entire musical score so brilliantly! Hmmm, what else is new... I cut my hair? I guess you wouldn't know what a big deal that is to me, since this is the first time we've spoken in pretty much ever, but I did. I've always wanted to cut it short, but there was always something in the way-- strict ballet teachers, marching band... but now there's nothing, so I chopped it all off. Well, not it all-- I still have a good few inches left-- it's an A line cut, meaning it's longer in front than in the back, and it's about shoulder length in front and mid shoulder length (so halfway between chin and shoulder) in the back. It's so... freeing. I've also adopted the mindset of "why not"? I realized the only thing really keeping me from achieving what I wanted was me. So why not buy that cute necklace? If you have the confidence, you can rock it. Why not wear combat boots? You've always wanted to. Why not learn to draw like artists you admire? You have a good eye for imitations, and you can adapt your style to be something that you love. Ergo... why not? (I'm also learning Latin, hence "ergo".) Anyway, that's a huge whole chunk of text that you may or may not read (kudos and thanks to you if you do read it) and thanks for coming for Valentine's Day!

Wow, it's so cool we did similar stuff! My hair used to almost reach my waist, then I donated it, which was huge, so we have that in common as well!

I appreciate that huge chunk of text, actually. So no problem. :)

Oh, and--Yes, of course I remember you!

Why does everyone think I forgot them? :)

Ah, oh my goodness, Mei!!! *hugs* Hi! Wow, it’s been forever. Great to see you around again! Every time I see another older CBer back I’m like, ‘surely this is the last one until the actual day of the reunion...’ but so far I’ve been happily wrong every time. XD

Ah, a quote. Okay, brace yourselves, this is a long one, but maybe my favorite quote of all time: *rubs hands together* *inhales*

’It’s like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn’t want to know the end, because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. And when the sun shines, it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had plenty of chances of turning back, only they didn’t. They kept going. Because they were holding onto something.’

’What are we holding onto, Sam?’

’That there is some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it’s worth fighting for.’ — Samwise Gamgee (and Frodo Baggins)

Hi Mei!  Welcome back!  I'm Lucy B., but I had an identity crisis during the summer of 2018 and took a hiatus and came back as FountainPen.  I've actually started high school recently, and I'm a heck of a lot more stressed and a heck of a lot less active than I used to be.  Homework and the such.  Welcome back!

Hello! You most defenitely don't know me, as I joined in January of 2018. (Whoah, I've been on here almosnt a year now!) But I've heard a tiny bit about you, and am excited to know more. You seem like a pretty cool person. We like the same musicals. We both like quotes.

I'm not sure if I should provide a life update, but here goes: since I joined the CB I started writing poetry, participated in many roleplays, made many friends on here and even a few in real life. Got into Dear Evan Hansen. Won 3rd place in an oratory contest. Won the first round of a book trivia contest. Did a scene from a Shakespeare play with my very good friend and had one heck of a good time doing so. Made an AE.Got pranked with a ton of Google Translate Sings lyrics as pictures taped to my locker (I'm not sure why I even included that one. It was funny.) Got into many webcomics. Finished 6th grade. Hiked 17 miles on the Appalacian trail. Met one of my favorite authors. Began writing a story with my friends. Learned how to play Cabo and put that to good use. Wrote some letters. Kayaked down White Horse (I capsized, but that's not the important part). Went to the beach and the Shenandoahs. Played many really intense/complicated board games with my cousins. Designed a board game with my cousin. Used a 3D printer, a laser cutter, and a CNC router for the 1st time. Started 7th grade. Lost a friend. Got into the Grishaverse. Went on a field trip to an art museum. Had a good time there with my friends. Made two new friends. Made a killer theory about a book I read. Practiced for my Bat Mitzvah. Got into Panic! At The Disco and calligraphy. Started to really get to know people on here. Got really amazing Christmas presents. Played more board games. Saw a production of The Little Mermaid. Stayed up until 5:00 with my friend on New Year's. Got my first major haircut in half my life and donated it. Sold more Girl Scout Cookies than I ever have (88 boxes, halfway to NYC and Dear Evan Hansen!). Wrote this.

*looks up* Wow, I guess I did a lot this year. I'm not even sure I covered everything. Wasn't my most productive year, but I had a lot of fun and made some friends.

Now, I feel obligated to respond with a Dear Evan Hansen quote, so here's my favorite from that song and the entire musical: "When you don't feel strong feel strong enough to stand, you can reach, reach out your hand."

The Appalacian trail? That's cool. And you like the Grishaverse too? I love it! None of my friends liked the trilogy, so that makes me really happy.

You've heard about me? What have you heard? :p

Hey Mei!! Welcome back!

I'm not really sure if you remember me, but I do remember all the quotes you had! Great to see you back.
