My best friend, V, pointed that out the last time I saw her...... But then I said, "What if you are roasting a marshmallow, and you are holding it on top of the fire? That means it would be on fire." We had a long-ish (about 5 minutes) conversation/debate about that.

But would it be on fire, or would it be above fire? To me, on means that the marshmallow would be, to some extent, physically resting atop the fire. Since the fire is not really solid, it can't, nor can it consistently "touch" the fire. I think "on fire" is meant as more of a conceptual meaning because fire is kind of a process more than an object that can be placed relative to another. Something being on fire means it's fueling a combustion reaction, which makes it an attribute to the thing rather than a thing in itself. Perhaps it should be "with fire", or "firing"?
I just went and over-explained something again, didn't I. I'll stop now.
