Rosh Hashannah!

Chatterbox: Down to Earth

Rosh Hashannah!

Rosh Hashannah!

Or however you spell it.

Anyway, Rosh Hashannah is the Jewish New Year, literally translating to the head of the year, and the beggining of the Days of Awe, the days in between it and Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement-- another Jewish Holiday).

Does anyone else celebrate it? We celebrate by going to (very long) services, and eating round challah, honeycake, and apples dipped in honey (round foods and sweet foods, for a sweet new year). My family usually also goes apple picking-- this year, as always, we have way more apples than we know what to do with; let me know if any of you guys live near DC and would a fresh apple :) And hosting breakfast for Yom Kippur. How do you guys celebrate? @Admins, what are some of your traditions?

Shannah Tovah everyone-- Have a sweet new year!

We pick apples at a local orchard, then make applesauce according to Grandma's recipe. Then we have a neighborhood bonfire, toast marshmallows, and make s'mores.

I'm not Jewish, but this sounds really fun! I love challah bread! Once I ate three loaves in one lunch. I think this is a lovely holiday!

Oh, you're Jewish? I didn't know that! I actually was in the DC area for the first day of Rosh Hashanah to visit my family, but drove back down to Richmond for the second day. I made a filled cake this year, mainly on my own! It was really good- I put strawberry jam, walnuts, raisins, and shredded apple in it and gave it two layers! I went to services at my cousins' synagogue for the first day and on the second day where I go regularly. For Yom Kippur I think we're going to stay here. I don't think we have many unusual traditions for Rosh Hashannah or Yom Kippur. Oh, except for the taeglich. I don't know how to spell it, but they're balls of dough covered with thick, boiled honey and put in little cupcake wrappers with nuts. It's super good! I have never seen anyone outside my family make them, but has anyone ever heard of them?

I’m not Jewish, I’m Hindu, but I do think it sounds fun (though not as fun as Holi) and have a suggestion of what to do with the apple! (even though I live nowhere near DC)

Dehydrated apples are really nice and easy to make, so I suggest you do that! Just borrow a dehydrator from someone, cut the apples into rings, lay them on the shelves, and turn it on for five-ish hours. Hope this helped.

That sounds fun! We stayed with some Jewish cousins once during Hannukah, and attended a Passover service a couple of times, but other than that I don't have much experience with Jewish holidays.
