Chatterbox: Down to Earth

Antique book collectors

Antique book collectors congregate here.

I love to collect antique books and I just bought a 1915 1st edition book called The American Country Girl. ( Isn't that cute!) I also have The Young Folks' Treasury from 1916, and an old-fashioned book of stories for girls. Does anyone else like old books?

Yes! I have some that have been handed down in my family, including some of The Five Little Peppers (without looking, I think from the late 1800s!) and four Twins books by Lucy Fitch Perkins. I just received one of those my sister had had a few weeks ago and when I started to read it, found that it was published in 1918, so it's exactly 100 year old! It's in great condition with sturdy white pages and solid binding. I come from a whole family of librarians, and we all love books!

Ooh!

While I haven't collected any antique books, old books hold a place in my heart. I have a grandmother that collects all things antique (especially graniteware), and when I was younger, we would visit her house often. While I've moved to Illinois and my grandparents are still in an amazing old farmhouse in Michigan, my family visits as much as possible.

But, enough context.

My grandma had (and still has) a good amount of older books, and I would pick any random books I could find up and read them. I read a lot of aged Little Golden Books, but, while those were cute, my favorite book was probably Heidi. I read it when I was young and didn't care about plot or characters, and it captivated me--I could see everything clearly in my mind, and everything was just simply exciting to me, while it was still relaxing.

To this day, I can read Heidi without caring about or considering the modern book criteria I have today. (Exciting plot! Perfect imperfect protagonist! Good reasons for the antagonist! Rawr!)

While I don't know if those books were old enough to be considered antiques, I still love them.

I just looked it up and learned that Heidi was first published in 1881! A good story stands the test of time. I don't know when you grandmother's edition was published, but it's certainly a classic!

Oh ADmin I love the Five Little Peppers! Such a sweet story! My fam is kinda into old things, but my mom will not collect antiques. I really have no idea why lol

My mother read it to us in chapters before bed. If I'm remembering right, either Phronsie or Polly got the measels, and there was worry that she would go blind. I think we also had The Five Little Peppers and How Grow and Joel Pepper (off the top of my head without checking).

I forgot, I also have a book of moral stories for young children called Pleasure and Profit from 1855. ( I got for 25 cents at a used bookstore!)

Wow—1855! That's before the Civil War!
