Chatterbox: Down to Earth

Fashion advice needed!

Fashion advice needed!

I'm on the fence about buying a new pair of shoes. I've been doing some work for my dad's company this month, and I've earned a couple hundred dollars, plus several hundred more I have in the bank. I don't usually spend much and I don't have anything I need to save for, so I thought I'd give myself a pair of Adidas sneakers (neo cloudfoam, white with black stripes) as a birthday-ish present. They're fifty dollars.

Three things are holding me back.

1. I recently did a closet purge, and was shocked to find that I had almost 200 items of clothing (I cut it down to 116, all things I love. I'd highly recommend you to do something like this!). But this includes around 12 pairs of shoes. Do I really need more? I already have several pairs of sneakers (1 athletic pair of Nikes, a gross pair for mowing the lawn, and a pair of Keds, as well as a pair of slip on sneakers). It seems a little extra.

2. Is it worth the money? Could I spend it better another way? Am I being selfish?

3. I love the look of these sneakers, but Adidas sneakers like these are kind of trendy right now. Will I still want to wear them in a year? Two years? Or will they just look dated? Even if I get a lot of wear out of them at first, will it be worth it?

So to buy, or not to buy?

Hopefully I haven't bored you to death with all my overthinking!!

Ok.

Here we go.

There is no such thing as having too many shoes. That's for your first concern. Trust me, as someone who obsesses over my clothes, the biggest problem for matching an outfit is the shoes. And based on what you were saying, they seem to be pretty easy to match. On your second concern: I'm saving up over three hundred dollars for a flipping doll. You make more sense than I do. And shoes in general are pricy, plus you'll definitely have more than enough leftovers to buy books and games and whatnot. And on your last concern... Does it really matter what's in style at the moment? If you like them, you should wear them, no matter what other people think. And if it helps, people are more likely to notice if your shirt is dated rather than your shoes.

I hope that was helpful!

Well, I think it's generally good to ask yourself questions before you buy something, so you don't end up with too much stuff, so I don't think you're really overthinking this at all. You could wait to see if there's something else out there that attracts your interest, or you could keep saving in case there is something else later. If you really want the shoes, I think you've earned them. If you feel bad about spending the money on yourself, you could also donate some of your money to a charity you care about.

I hope this helped!

Thanks for the advice, guys!! I've decided to go ahead and buy the shoes-- I've been thinking about them for several weeks now and I still want to. They're ordered and on their way to meet me at overnight camp!

@ Pooki P, I totally agree about shoes! They can really make or break an outfit! (and for several awkward years in middle school I literally wore athletic sneakers with EVERY outfit except dresses!) Anyway, if I keep wearing these years after they're "in", I'll just look vintage or something xD

@ Evergreen, I like your idea about donating to charity as well! I'm setting aside 50 dollars and looking for something that helps girls around the world get an education.

Thanks again!!

Aw, no problem! I hope you find the charity you're looking for, and I hope you enjoy your shoes!
