D&D!!So
Chatterbox: Down to Earth
D&D!!So
D&D!!
So I recently started listening to this hilarious podcast called "The Adventure Zone" where these guys sit down and play dungeons and dragons, (it's super hilarious), and I realized, "Hey, I played that game for two seconds. Why not do it again?"
I've played before with my dad and sister, but.... I mean, that doesn't exactly prepare you to DM. And now I'm sitting down with some friends to play and I have to read through this enormous manual and figure all this out. So I was wondering if any of you have ever played, and if so, if you had any advice, websites I should check out, interesting stories I should try and throw at my poor, unsuspecting adventurers. (Or funny stories. Because D&D is where those are born lol.)
Luna says "ywng". Well if you're yawning at the mere mention of this fantastic game, then I just won't bring you along I guess. I won't even make you an NPC or anything.
*I.... don't care.*
Of course not.

I have played D&D also, with my mum and dad. I have never been the DM, but I did pick up some advice about it while looking over my Dad's shoulder while he was reading something about it. So here goes: Heavily borrow from stories you have already read. Of course, I guess that means you could throw in a plot that you made up yourself and use that... I guess that would be useful if you wanted to throw together the plot in a hurry. I suppose it could also be used for adding fun references to your favorite video game franchises or something along those lines if it got dull.
That's really all I have. I hope it was decently helpful!
Banba says wnin.
Win.
I guess that's good luck!

Thanks so much for the advice! I'll be sure to keep that in mind if my adventurers do something crazy and I need to as lib lol

No problem. Have fun being DM!
Banba says Orcc. Orc? How appropriate for a D&D thread.

I played D&D once with my family. Not everyone was super enthusiastic, but it was still fun. My character's quirk was that she believed all spiders were harmless (which actually came up once, although everyone had forgotten but me), my mom's character's skills were calligraphy and throwing (we joked during fights that she should do calligraphy at our opponent, and my twin always encouraged her to throw rocks at birds), and my twin's character was an attractive yet uncharismatic yeti. Our druid acquired a pair of wild boars who had the highest stats of our entire party, and once when a spell went wrong, it rained guinea pigs. I think we all saved each other's lives at one point or another. It was great.
I don't think I can offer much advice, but The Order of the Stick is one of the best (and very few) D&D webcomics I know of. Make flexible plans, don't let the plot get too out of hand, and have fun!

Oh, I heard of The Order Of The Stick. I was planning to read it. Will I get it if I don't do D&D, though?

I play no-holds-barred, no dice, half the characters are gods recess D&D, so I’m probably not best to explain the rules. I have a character named Echo who’s a seventh level tiefling with an annoying demon that can talk to her, a spiked armband, and the ability to shoot fire, and then I have a more reasonable first level named Leaf, a devil-mau-care halfling monk/acrobat. My advice is know the players. Pick what they like, like mystery or action. Also, I once created an encounter with fire demons that was supposed to be really hard- and all the characters were immune to fire. So know your players that way too.

I don't quite understand how you play D&D. I know it's an RPG, and I know what the Dungeon Master is, but, like, how are dice used? And what differences do classes make? How are spells cast? What are the maps for?
Can someone help me out? I'd like to learn how to play...
(May 16, 2018 - 8:56 pm)
to understand it you kinda hafta read the dungeon master's guide, the player's handbook, and the monster manual.

I play D&D. IT's the BEST thing ever!! I have like um.. 5 characters. Don't worry it get easier as you go on.

YES YES YES YES AND YES!
I listen to the adventure zone as well! I love the McElroy boys! Who's your favorite character? It used to be Taako for me, but after I listened to the final, it's probably Magnus. What arc are you on?
I also play a ton of DND! For my first piece of advice, I would just say... Just Do it! If you mess up on rules, its totally ok, because the main goal of DND is to have fun! You'll learn as you play, and even if the first session kind of sucks (And it always sucks) just keep pushing through and it will be worth it!

I recently started playing D&D, and it's awesome! If you want to know how to play, I'd recommend reading the Player's Handbook. It tells you everything you need to know. You don't need any of the other books unless you're planning on DMimg.
So I was reading through the Player's Handbook because it's really interesting (of course), and I came up with this idea for you to throw on your poor, unsuspecting adventurers. So ravens can mimic sounds, right? Have a raven mimic the sound of a baby crying. Then your adventurers will probably go investigate, only to be attacked by whomever is their enemy.

How did I not see this? D&D is the best! Plus other role-playing games too! I should try that podcast.
Laylanie says wnig. You can't win at D&D, Laylanie.

Hey, you guys! I need some help! So I'm writing an adventure/dungeon/campaign/imnotreallysure, and I need NPCs, but I don't really feel like coming up with all of the details of all of the characters, so could someone help make the following:
Evendur Greycastle - male, human, cleric
Kathra Lutgehr - female, mountain dwarf, fighter
Anaraea Amakiir - female, half-elf, warlock
As for their backstories, they all live in a city on a harbor. And for posting them, just list the attributes of a regular D&D character sheet in a form like a regular CB character sheet.
Thank you so much!

What are these characters meant to do? Help out the players, be villains, provide information, etc.?

I love D&D! I've mostly been a player, but I have DMed a bit. Don't be afraid to ignore what the dice say, that would be my biggest tip. Your job as DM is to keep the story running smoothly and make sure everyone has a good time. If that means weakning every roll the monsters make, that totally okay. Other than that, stay flexible. You'll probably be pretty cruddy the first few times, but no one's perfect, especially when they're starting. I would start with a few one shots to give you some practice. It might also be easier if you find one online so you can just focus on te DMing itself and don't have to make the adventure.
