My friend has four horses - Pecos, Cody, Reb, and Trix, plus the fat ponies, Jeb 'n' Jake.

My sister has a horse, Brother, who was formerly mine.

I took lessons, once. The instructor was an absolute egotistical [insert unprintable names here]. I ended up crying several times and ultimately going through a rather depressed, I'm-not-good-at-anything stage, which was rather pathetic, and stopped taking lessons. And lost interest in horses. I didn't lose the depression... It's like the flu, appears suddenly, goes away suddenly, etc.

I'm sure your experience will be nothing like that though! I have a tendency towards sad outlooks on life anyway, and judging by your use of smileys I don't think that's a problem for you... :)

One question: english or western?

Don't worry.  I've been really depressed in the last year, too.  All of my best friends turned mean and dumped me out of everything.  Now, if I hang out with someone once a month, it is amazing.  But, I have made a ton of friends on this site, and I have learned to always add a smile, and you will be happy!! :)

"Who of you, by worrying, can add a single hour to his life?" - Matthew 6:27

"Don't worry about a thing, cause every little thing is going to be all right." - Bob Marley (the reggae guy, not the comidians, you Mainahs!)

"Don't worry, be happy!  Because when you frown, you put others down!  Put a smile on your face! :)" - Bobbby McFerrin, my second favorite reggae musician

Be happy!!!! :):):):):):):)

I think of him as my little unicorn!:):):) Yay for fellow horse lovers!:):):)

Don't even ASK if i like horses. I do NOT like horses...... I ADORE horses!!! They are the BEST. I don't take lessons, but I used to. One time at my lesson instead of a normal lesson I rode a rodeo pony who would walk one minute and gallop the next! It was not like a bucking bronco or anything but it was the only time I have ever galloped;)

I just started taking Western lessons at a barn my friend recommended. It was really tough for me, because I usually ride English and I'm used to having my stirrups shorter and my reins in both hands. To make matters worse, the horse I rode (ironically named Rebel), stopped short at every corner of the pen when I was cantering him, and I got thrown onto his neck a lot. He's got a pretty bad temper, is herd bound, and is the ugliest horse I've ever seen, but we're going to be best friends eventually (that is, after we get over this worst-enemies stage). Any advice on keeping your stirrups when riding Western?

Your Rebel sounds like Jeb 'n' Jake, only not as fat! *laughs*

Anyway, as to keeping your stirrups, make sure you keep your heels down and your toes up and out. It looks ridiculous but it's good form and it helps the stirrups stay on your feet. Just make sure not to use your stirrups to stay balanced - riding in a saddle with your feet kicked out is a good exercise, and can improve your balance so you don't fly forward so badly when your horse stops like that.

Necking's gonna be hard to get used to, sorry.

English... I actually ride Western, but I thought I'd give English a try. I know my teacher quite well, and she is very nice. I don't think I could ever lose interest in horses. Oh, by the way, I don't go on the site very often, so you will have to be consistent in looking for replies.

Ahem, i am a horseback rider, too! (Mwa-ha, we meet again!) And it is even harder to ride a horse if it is an overeating fat glutton of a Connemara pon that decides it likes to chase jellyfish if you ride it on the shore. And those things HURT, man! But now I have a better horse that doesn't chase jellyfish! Do all my exclamation marks mean i have a good outlook on life?!

I'm not sure...I used to ride a VERY fat shetland pony named Poko, but she was rather old and she died...:(

I've only ridden a horse (pretty much the only time I've touched one, besides at fairs) was this summer at Yellowstone.  I got the dumb horse who loved to eat.  Let's see, what was her name...  I think it was Rainbow, but that could have been my mom's horse...  She (the horse, not my mom) would walk a few feet then start eating.  I pulled her back up and kept walking.  She was a HUGE horse and was obviously really strong. :) She had to go to the bathroom three or four times, and I had a bunch of little kids behind me that thought it was hilarious.  One time, Rainbow started eating, so I pulled on the reigns and got her head up.  She was obedient, except for the fact that I actually wanted her to move.  It took me a while to get her to go, and, when I did, she galloped like the wind.  I know, it's crazy, but that was my favorite part of the whole trip.  We tried to do it again, but they cancelled it because of rain. :(  My parents may sign me up for lessons!! :)

Sorry I haven't looked at this for a while, but Paige, almost all horses love to eat. YOU GOT TO GALLOP?!?!?!?!?! The fastest I've ever gone was a trot, except once when I accidentally cantered. My one and only dream on a horse (besides owning one) is to learn how to jump. Does anyone else here know how to jump?
