So, I just recently participated in an oratory contest. I really liked hearing everyone's take on certain issues, and I loved hearing the passion in their voices. I'm going to try to make this a thread for people to stand up and, well, advocate for issues they are passionate about. Also, let's please not judge anyone else's opinion prematurely or aggresively. It's okay to disagree, it's not okay for someone to challenge and hurt the feelings of someone merely because they have a different belief. We can debate, but let's keep it friendly. Admins, is this kind of thread okay? I hope so! Speak loud CBers, speak proud!
Debate threads are allowed if the comments are respectful and the subject appropriate for Chatterbox, not too mature or political.

I also have to participate in a speech contest (next Monday, in fact) Anyways, here are a couple topics that I'm a strong supporter of (they may not all be CB appropriate. . )
- plea bargaining & lack of defense council
- female & minority representation in the media
- the war on journalism

Good luck on your speech contest! Admins, is suicide prevention a CB appropriate topic?
@Shy Peacock, it's a great thing to advocate for, so we'll let you list it as a topic you support or advocate for. But, we won't allow much debate or discussion that goes into detail on the topic. Hope that makes sense.

one thing that I am passionate about is advocacy in general. I think that it is important for all people to have the ability to express their opinions on subjects. change comes when ordinary citizens take a stand for issues they care about. school should teach students to form their own opinions instead of pushing certain agendas and everybody should have a platform to display their passion.
some other things I care about:
- gun control
- suicide prevention
- freedom of speech
- mass incarceration

Advocacy! Yeah!
Well, I'm pro-life for starters. I believe, in the wise words of Horton the Elephant, that "A person's a person no matter how small."

I care about...
- breaking down stereotypes about minorities
- stopping the death penalty
- subsidizing stuff so the rich pay more and the poor pay less
- global warming
- unions
- criminal justice reform and immigration reform (I don't know exactly how to reform these things, but I know that there's something wrong with a criminal justice system that punishes people harshly who aren't even guilty and that focuses on just punishing instead of rehabilitating criminals and teaching them how they can become better. I also know that there's something wrong with an immigration system where only the rich can come in and where it takes so long to get to come in legally that people have to cross borders in a dangerous and illegal way.)
