Chatterbox: Down to Earth

Gender. Oka

Gender.

Okay, so I guess this is mostly a question for the admins. What, er... gender stuff is allowed? I think you know my AEs are a little odd about it. I'd like to know with some clarity what I can talk about here, mostly because it's about as delicate as a glass spiderweb, and I'd rather not break it. So, what genders are recognized/allowed, what are the boundaries, and why?

Hoping this doesn't restart a war. *fingers crossed*

This issue was discussed in length last summer. The threads are somewhere on Chatterbox, though I'm not sure where and discussion of the topic has been ended. Any talk of sexuality and romance is very limited, if allowed at all, and all comments are subject to approval by Admin. If part of a comment is edited out, then it is not allowed.

I believe that the conflict ended on this note:

Same-gender romance is allowed on the Chatterbox, but it is restricted to the same boundaries as opposite-gender romance is. Those boundaries restrict extreme romance and sexuality for all types of romance.

Yes, this is correct. We don't discriminate against different orientations or genders, but we do have pretty strict rules about discussing romance and sexuality for everyone. A good rule of thumb is nothing that would be considered inapropriate for those under 13. Of course, we will review every comment submitted and may remove inappropriate content.

Thank you both, but I believe I understand what is allowed in sexuality and romance. I was inquiring as to whether it's okay for Nymph to be a gender other than female sometimes, or for Sea Glass to be neither a girl or a boy. The thing is that my concept of them both extends outside of strictly either female or male, and changing their gender to fit that would make it easier to know how they really are. I don't want to offend anyone or break the rules, but it can be difficult when I don't know what the rules of this subject are. So I would like to clarify that in order to make better decisions.

Yes, both these situations are perfectly fine. Go ahead and start writing, @Viola? and we will let you know if anything crosses the line.

@CBette It would be nice if you said "straight" or "opposite gender" instead of "normal". I know you probably didn't mean any harm, but it's implying that same gender couples are abnormal, which, you know, is not something that's great to hear.

You make a good point, Bibliophile. I've changed the original comment.

Hmm. Well, they are your Æs, and yours to do with what you like, and I won't be mad or anything if you do decide to do that, but I'm afraid it may cause some issues with Devinymph. I'm not at all comfortable with same-gender shipping, and if Nymph were to be something other than female at times...well, I'm not sure how I would feel about shipping them. I would be very sad to have to cut it off, but I'm not sure how far my conscience will allow me to go if that's the case.

I hope I don't sound rude or offensive, and I hope that makes sense. I just wanted to let you know.

Thanks. I understand. I've been thinking about it, actually, because I know you're not comfortable with that. I would have to ask Nymph about it, but she'll probably be okay, especially if she and Devin stay friends without the romance. Maybe we could RP about it? On the Let's play house thread. I was considering Nymph showing up at the door as a boy just to see Devin's reaction, shifting back immediately after (and of course in front of him, to prove it's really her), and then I know that might make Devin uncomfortable, although Nymph might not know or want to restrain herself, so they could talk about it out in the woods. Good communication is important to all healthy relationships, even ending ones.

I respect your concerns, and I do understand if you decide to take Devin out of the ship. I get it. I wouldn't be uncomfortable with going on the same, but I know what it's like when something just feels wrong. If you're not okay with continuing, it's completely fine to pull out.

Thanks, I'm glad you understand. I think they could go on being friends just fine. I don't think I'll tell Devin yet. I'll let him find out on his own, on the Let's play house thread, most likely. Talking in the woods sounds good. I'm sure he'll be sad, but he'll understand, and I think things would be worse if he continued to be in the relationship, at least romantically.

Well, good to know the official rules on this. *laughs* Onyx is-

imbi

Well, there you go. And I'm working on several AEs, not all of which are strictly male or female. So, good to know. Thanks, Admins.

Looking back at this, I see what made me uncomfortable. The use of the word conscience in that context carries an implication that we're doing something wrong, maybe even committing a crime. It's natural and understandable if one is indeed not comfortable with the activity, but it is still perhaps less than kind to give the idea that another's gender is by nature incorrect or bad. However, everything else is polite as can be, and I believe such an implication was most likely unintentional.

I can't tell what you refer to  by "this," nor can I easily find the use of "conscience" on the thread this comment leads me to. But certainly, no one's gender is incorrect or bad.

I never really thought of this, but good to know! I'm creating AEs now and I myself am bi, so I might incorporate that.

Well, I have two AE designs right now, but only one name: Dryn. Pronounced like "drin". Problem is that I'm already used to thinking of both of them as Dryn.

1) Ice-blue spiky hair, ice-blue glowing eyes. Always laughing and joking. Very friendly and nice. May have weak ice superpowers. Like, he can't shoot ice daggers or build ice castles, but his weapon of choice is an ice battle-axe that he can create at will.

2) All black-and-white, he looks like a faded old photograph. Quiet, always thinking. Emotional and empathetic. Has phasing abilities: when he touches something he can turn it black-and-white and move through it. When he gets emotional he fades more and becomes almost transparent.

So those are my more developed ideas. Other ones are sort of just floating in space.

Onyx herself is basically an AE. She has a fully developed personality. I even decided that she has a human form, too. (Her normal form is a large dark grey shadow-spirit-cat. I've actually named her species: Shadowcats. Yeah. Like the superhero.)

Wait, is she a CAPTCHAE?
